Custom Hammerhead ALIEN Figure on Ebay.

This custom made oddity is currently available on Ebay with a starting bid of US $39.  The 3.75 inch tall figure listed for sale features the body of a Super7 ReAction ALIEN with a Kenner Star Wars Hammerhead Alien head mounted on it.  Painted black.  Carded and blister packed to boot with art on both sides of the card, it’s definitely one of the more curious custom made ALIEN figures I’ve seen for a while.

The motivation behind this charcoal finished ‘Ithoromorph’ no doubt lies in a much longer story.  It is likely to be a reaction, of a sort, to Super7’s very own ALIEN ReAction figure released earlier this year featuring a tribute ALIEN cast in the original colours of Kenner’s older 1979 Ithorian Hammerhead figure (See Below).  But this story goes well beyond that.

A sample of the Hammerhead action figure was the basis for the very first prototype  3.75 inch ALIEN made at Kenner almost 40 years ago.   Whew…  This is getting tricky. Continue reading

LEGO ALIEN 3 Bambi Burster.

Here’s something neat I found on flickr. LEGO artist, AL13N163NA, has posted a wonderful LEGO ALIEN 3 Bambi Burster.

He has this to say about it.  “With the permission of the great masters Arvo Brothers based on their design of the chestbruster, almost a year ago I created two xenomorphs of some movie of this saga”

AL13N163NA’s influence, the Arvo Brothers, have been known to produce some fantastic custom LEGO Projects, including publishing books about them so you can replicate the result.  Here’s a review of one of their books that documents how to build an 18 inch tall Alien figure out of LEGO.  Needless to say, I love this book.

Toyark Photo Shoot – Hiya Toys, ALIENS: Colonial Marines.

Old News for some but these are new to me.

Last month, Toyark posted a photo shoot of Hiya Toys upcoming set of figures based on ALIENS: Colonial Marines.  This time, the content of the photo session were the marines encountered during the course of the game, Captain Cruz, Private Bella and Private Redding. All in 3.75 inch format.

Each character includes around 18 points of articulation, character specific weapons and a display stand.  They are priced around US$20 each and are available now.

Head over to Toyark for more details and a complete gallery of images. Continue reading

Mamegyorai Post Detailed Analysis of their ALIEN Statue.

Mamegyorai have posted a series of images and text exploring the intense level of detail on their upcoming ALIEN Big Chap statue.  The article takes us on a close up tour of the phenomenal presentation, much of which has been “reproduced for the first time in the world.”

I’ve been keeping an eye open on the progress of this intriguing item since it was announced earlier this year.  As a fully featured representation of the creature seen in the movie, this one does look like one of the best ever made available for public purchase in this smaller scale.  Just go and check out the incredible detail the sculptors have applied to this item.  The page documents so many features that were previously very obscure or never made public before. Prime 1 Studio Releases Images of their Scorpion Alien.

Prime 1 Studio have released over 40 images of their upcoming ‘Scorpion Alien’ statue.  This statue is inspired by the cover art of Dark Horse Presents #101 by famed cartoon artist, Bernie Wrightson appearing in 1995.

I don’t believe this item has any association with the 1992 Kenner action figure of the same name but this does look amazing.  The statue is mounted on a base that features a piece of Weyland Yutani spacecraft wreckage with two Alien Eggs attached to it. An additional Egg with a Facehugger will only be available in the Deluxe version.  Sounds like quite a prize to me.

Polymer Monsters ALIEN Garage Kit.

While the Big Boys holding the ALIEN licence are waiting until next year to divulge their Official product for ALIEN’s 40th Anniversary, it gives us some opportunity to give other independent and unofficial merchandise manufacturers some breathing space.  Here, for example is a new garage resin kit that may be of interest to Collectors.

The Polymer Monsters ALIEN resin kit is now available to order directly from the manufacturer.  This ‘do it yourself’ ALIEN is 1/4 scale, 58 centimeters tall (Just shy of 2 foot) and approx 4kg.  The artist, Darren Kent says “My vision of the creature is based on Gigers paintings just as much as the movie versions. To start I’ll be casting these to order, please pm me for cost and turn around time.”

Mr. Tendril’s BIG Make Over Now Live.

I’ve been in possession of this old Kenner ALIEN action figure for a while now.  I spent about 6 weeks working on rehabilitating this old toy.  Recently I finished all that is required and he’s now ready to be displayed publicly.

This is no normal Kenner ALIEN, though.  He was a wreck when I first acquired him.  He’d already been customised by a previous owner and had since fallen into a state of substantial disrepair.  I took it upon myself to make him ‘whole’ once again.  A complete restoration was out of the question – the previous custom work could not be undone.  The solution?  Embrace those extant changes and transform him into something new.  This old Kenner toy has become the oddity now known as ‘Mr. Tendril’.

The entire process from start to finish is documented in this lengthy piece.  Almost a dozen pages of it, actually.  You can start reading right here and marvel at the weird and wonderful rise to display worthy status of the Amazing Mr. Tendril!

Knock Offs, Bootlegs and Other Illegal Aliens.

I’ve just posted a new article that explores the very strange phenomena of knock off and bootleg ALIEN action figures.  From China to Mexico, these startling and strange anomalies crawl out from under the hazy blanket of obscurity to make you wonder what on Earth these manufacturers were thinking when they made these weird things.

This exploration into the strange and nefarious world of bootleg ALIEN action figures is available for you to read now.

REVIEWED: Mexican Bootleg Predalien.

I am finally beginning to settle into my new residence and now have internet access once again.  It’s time to resume giving some regular attention to HIDEOUS PLASTIC.  Let’s start with something I have not done in months.  Let’s start with a review.

I’ve been exploring the strange and murky world of bootleg ALIEN action figures of late and found some mighty odd stuff.  Let’s take a look at one of them, shall we?  This review attempts to extract some sense from a weird and wondrous bootleg Predalien action figure from Mexico.

When it comes to strange and unconventional, this figure has got it all.  Enjoy!

Moving House Archeological Discovery.

As you may be aware, I am currently moving house.  Anyone who’s done so will tell you about their ‘re-discoveries’ of forgotten goodies stowed away for long years of safe keeping. Here’s one I thought I’d share with you.
It’s a box full of 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure legs.  I have no idea how many are in here; but they’ve been in storage for 20 years, possibly longer.  Nice find.  Other parts may yet be uncovered as excavations continue in the Lost World nether regions of my previous residence.

It’s Time for me to Move on…

Let’s face it.  No matter who you are, no matter what you do, there comes a day when you just have to move on.

After over 20 years of being comfortable in this house it’s time for me to pack up all my toys – no matter how ugly they are – and move on.  It’s been great living here in rural Victoria, Australia, but the larger than average property is just becoming too much for me to maintain.  So, it’s back into the suburbs, where I will enjoy the luxury of being able to walk to the closest cinema. 9 Inch Kotobukiya ArtFX Alien Comparison.

Just thought I’d toss this up on the front page.  The 9 inch tall Kotobukiya figure is arguably one of the best figures available and certainly the best of its type in the 7-9 inch range of figures.  It’s a startling piece of work featuring some tremendous detail including all the familiar body parts right down to the subtle creasing of the suit as worn by the actor and stuntmen involved in the production of the 1979 movie.
It’s actually difficult to appreciate the amount of detail on this item, even when a ruler is placed next to it.  It’s a piece that borders on phenomenal for what’s on offer in this small statuette.  For a proper appreciation of the detail on this almost unbelievable piece, it’s best comparing it directly to other ALIEN action figures.

Tooth Fairy Studios Pokemon/ALIEN Crossover.

UPDATED 6/8/18.

It looks like images of one of those weird and unexpected crossover products people enjoy so much has been posted online. Posing the question, “What would arise from a face hugged Pikachu if an Alien parasite emerged from his chest?”, Tooth Fairy Studio offers the answer in the form of  this curious amalgam of ALIEN and Pokemon in their Freak Pika figurine:

Images of the Freak Pika  (Freakachu..?  Pokemorph..?) are from the recent Wonderfest 2018 (Japan) and Ani-Com & Games HK 2018 (Hongkong) events.  These 4.5 inch tall figures are cast in resin with yellow/green regular editions priced around US$75.  Also available is a number of different coloured variants. These are unlicenced crossover garage items and are extremely limited in quantity to only 100 Regular and 10 Special editions (of each alternate colour).  They are available directly from the Artist, who resides in China.  The purchase page and details are completely in Chinese and limitations on international postage may be present.

The photographer for these items is unidentified (so proper credit in this regard is lacking – something I wish to rectify if possible); but I would like to thank Desmond Mo for calling these curious items to our attention and pursuing further details.   More pictures after the break. MAFEX Big Chap Figure.

Medicom Mafex Figure Collectors Facebook page has posted an image of what looks like to be an upcoming Medicom Mafex release of the Big Chap.

Not a lot has been revealed other then this image of the figure but it looks to be in the 7 inch range.  Of note are the articulated toes and what appears to be double jointed knees.  This looks to be a terrific figure.  I’m looking forward to finding out more about this item as information is released.

It wouldn’t surprise me if this item will be released next year – ALIEN will have its 40th Anniversary next May and I’m expecting to see a lot of content much like this item announced and teased before then.

Hollywood Collectibles SDCC ’18 Goodies on Show.

Hollywood Collectibles is showing off some neat goodies at their SDCC 2018 booth.  There’s a fine looking version of the Nostromo, which is always welcome.  I’m happy to see it on show but more appealing to me is the 1:3 scale statue of one of the Aliens that appear in ALIEN: Covenant.  This 27 inch figure looks amazing.HCG looks like they’ve done a real fine job on this one, then again they did use digital information provided by the ALIEN: Covenant movie makers to craft this item.  Preorders and more information are available now. Mamegyorai Product Page Now Live.

Mamegyorai have launched the product page for their upcoming 1:3 scale statue of the Big Chap.  While it’s completely in Japanese it’s a stunning page for what promises to be an even more stunning product of which 750 will be available worldwide.

This 28 inch tall statue will be released early next year.  Here’s the pre-order page for this item if you want one.  You may have to sell a kidney to afford one, but you don’t need 2 kidneys, right? …and you’ll have the dual benefits of owning a genuinely kick arse ALIEN statue AND live happily knowing you’ve probably saved someone’s life. Done Deal!

Anyway, if this item is being showcased at SDCC ’18.  Please throw me some info and especially photos.  Would love to hear from you; and you’ll be credited appropriately.

Actually, that goes for any ALIEN related stuff seen at the con.  Thank you. 🙂

Custom Made 3.75 Inch ‘Prototype’ ALIEN Figure.

San Diego Comic Con 2018 is almost upon us and will open this weekend with Super7’s con exclusive Hammerhead ALIEN ReAction figure making its debut. The soon to be available ReAction figure draws its influences from the unique kit bashed prototype  Alien action figure Kenner created as a visualisation exercise to prepare the company to manufacture their new 3.75 inch products to be released in 1980.

As the original Alien prototype utilises a Star Wars hammerhead figure as a base for the production sample item, it’s easy to see the attraction of pursuing a creative endeavor to create a custom version. After all, the Star Wars Hammerhead action figure is relatively easy to come by and all you need is the preparedness to modify it, add a few characteristic Alien features and paint it black.
