Shameless Self Promotion Opportunity. Hah! Let’s do it.

News is always a little sparse this time of year – and last year was a bumper crop with all that ALIEN Covenant stuff happening as well.  So I’m taking this opportunity to promote this feature on HIDEOUS PLASTIC.

Yep.  It’s the 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure gallery.  All 12 figures are represented on these pages.  That includes the original figure from 1979 and all the derivative and tribute figures released since then.  Some as recently as 2017 – and as we already know, another one is coming.  Most likely to be released this year.

Check out the 1979 Kenner ALIEN gallery!  It’s one of this site’s great features.  It consists of a dozen pages featuring dozens of photos and product information on Kenner, Tsukuda Hobby, Halcyon, Gentle Giant and Super7 versions of the classic action figure.

Improvised Jar Lid Display Stand Works.

There’s no doubt the Kotobukiya ArtFX figure is one of the best you can buy.  I reviewed it and was recently fortunate enough to pick up a 2nd one, extra cheap.  Mind you, it was cheap for a reason – the sale included nought but the figure itself.  No box.  No display stand.  No mini flashing disco strobe light to show it off… just the figure itself.

As the figure is highly dependent upon being set up on a stand – and none was present with this particular purchase, it raises a big question:  How can I display this wonderful iteration of the Alien to its maximum benefit and not have it fall over and risk breaking?  How..? Continue reading

Hand Made ALIEN Crochet Pattern.

It’s the perfect gift for someone who loves cuddly little toys that want to rip your face off.

The pattern for crocheting this super cute 8 inch tall Alien can be purchased here, on Etsy.  Once paid for, just download the pattern as a PDF file.  Apparently, the pattern is really easy to follow and results are terrific.  Here’s what the designer has to say about it.  “This pattern is for the medium advanced crocheters but if you are ready to try I am always ready to help. You should know basic crochet stitches including chain, slip stitch, single crochet, decrease, increase and how to start with magic ring.”

I guess you could use off white wool along with some small modifications to the pattern to crochet a Neomorph, too, if you wish.

It’s Official: Disney Buys Fox.

The Walt Disney Company and Twenty First Century Fox have announced a ‘definitive agreement’ for Disney to acquire Fox’ film and television studios.  Significant movie properties Disney now own and control include Marvel titles such as X-Men, Deadpool, The Fantastic Four and all upcoming James Cameron Avatar sequels.  Television shows now also owned by Disney includes Modern Family and The Simpsons.  It’s assumed that both ALIEN and PREDATOR movie series are now also owned by Disney.  The deal has cost Disney in excess of $52 billion.

As to how Disney will treat a property such as ALIEN is yet to be seen.  No doubt one of their associate studios will be responsible for the production of any  future ALIEN movies as the meaty chestbursting fiend isn’t exactly family friendly fare that Disney itself is known for. Continue reading

Cool Props 1:3 Scale ALIEN. Pre-orders Now Open.

The Cool Props Giger’s ALIEN 1:3 scale maquette/statuette is now available for pre-order at Sideshow Collectibles.
This nearly 3 foot tall statue is going to cost you a dollar shy of US $1,500.  That’s actually not bad considering the quality that appears to be on display here. Here’s what Sideshow has to say about this astounding piece. “At the H.R. Giger exhibition held in Japan known as “H.R. GIGER EXHIBITION IN JAPAN 87”, the Alien statue on display was made from the screen-used suit for the movie “ALIEN”. Many fans were fascinated with its beauty still hold this Alien display as a holy grail.

38 Years ago, in Melbourne.

Today is December 6, 2017.  Exactly 38 years ago I saw ALIEN on its day of release in cinemas here in Australia. That means I’ve been a fan of this long running series for 38 years.

While the movie was originally released in the US on May 25, exactly 2 years to the day after Star Wars, here in Australia we had to wait 6 months for the movie to land on our shores.  6 months is a long time to wait and today, such a delay would be unthinkable.  Back then, however, the internet didn’t exist, piracy was a non-problem and spoilers were limited to print media that took months to cross the Pacific.  There was no rush to get entertainment media to Australian shores back then.  My, how the world has changed.

As a marked contrast, ALIEN Covenant was released here on May 11, 2017; The US didn’t see release of the movie until a week later, on May 19.  The wait may not have been so protracted but it was reversed.

I Still think ALIEN Covenant is a great movie.  I am looking forward to seeing where Sir Ridley Scott takes this series next.  Will I still be interested in these movies and the flood of weird junk that accompanies them in another 38 years?  Maybe.  I can’t tell.  I’ll at least be around for the movie’s 40th Anniversary.  In 2019.

Mamegyorai’s 1:3 ALIEN Project Images.

Stunning images have emerges from the recent Tokyo Comic Con 2017 of what appears to be a prototype of a new statuette of the Giger designed Alien creature.  The Japanese maker, Mamegyorai, had some incredible samples of their work in progress on show at their booth at the event.

The statuette is in the 1:3 scale range and posed in the classic stooped over stance.  This is an uncommon pose for manufacturers to adopt for sculpting the Big Chap but it is Continue reading

ALIEN: Isolation Screenshot Utility.

(UPDATED.)

Most people know I’m a big fan of the game, ALIEN: Isolation.  Many of them know I like to post screenshots of the game online.  Some of you have been asking me, how to do it yourselves?

The answer is a little program called Cheat Engine.  Download and install it.  You’ll also need an additional piece of software called a Cheat Table – which is basically a custom Continue reading

Cool props 1:3 ALIEN Maquette.

Cool props have a gallery stocked full of images of their upcoming statue of the creature from ALIEN.  At 1:3 scale it’s going to be a decent size.  As the Alien measures about 8 feet tall, this statue will be around the 2’8″ in height.

The Cool Props website is completely in Japanese – so we’ll have to wait until an official English website by Sideshow collectibles is available – so information is a little restricted.

I’ve been wondering why it’s called a ‘maquette’.  A maquette is a 3D concept piece, a sculpture used as a model to further aid in the development of a Project – and not a finished piece, which this is.  This is more of a statue than a maquette.  Japanese do things a little differently, I guess.

Section 9, Life Size ALIEN: Covenant Statue.

Here’s a nice addition to your front door entry way.  It’s a life size statue of the creatures that appear in the recent Ridley Scott movie, ALIEN: Covenant.

At 8 feet tall, this behemoth is going to demand some space in your display area.  It includes a green illuminated display base and “was created from the movie’s actual production files”.  You can order it online right now from the manufacturer, Section 9 and have it sent to me immediately.  Don’t delay!

ALIEN-MAN – Because he Dared to Dream!

UPDATED 26/11/17.

Look! It’s Spymo’s ALIEN-MAN. The most amazing action figure ever; and everyone who is interested in toys should own one!

Everything here looks relatively familiar.  The Kenner like package design boasts the placement of the product number ‘No. 0001’ and ‘Ages 4 and up’ badged on the upper corners. There’s also the attraction that this action figure features the likness of Bolaji Continue reading

How big is this Thing, Exactly? Experiments on Scale.

I understand the convenience of using coins to demonstrate the size of an item.  Everybody knows what a coin is.  This makes such a common item for comparing sizes a popular choice.  Unfortunately, it’s  all too often an inaccurate means of measuring an action figure.  Coins of an international origin can be different sizes and multiple different sized coins can complicate gauging the size of a figure.

To this end, this article explores the problems inherently present with using coins (and by extension, other common objects) to measure the size of action figures; and the size of anything else, really.

Improvised Display Stand Idea.

Here’s a neat little idea you might like to try out if you’re wanting some display stands and have a jar or 2 lying around the place that you’re not doing anything with.  Use the lids as display stands for your figure(s).  You know, the ones; those figures that need additional support when those crappy display stands supplied by the manufacturer just don’t measure up to the task *sigh*.

These jar lids have a hole drilled into them and a screw driven through for attaching to the foot/feet of a figure of your choice.  They are painted black and finished with a varnish.   This wonderful improvisation using easily found household materials was made by Yiğit Emin Kalaycıoğlu and they work like a treat!

Thanks for the great idea!  I’m definitely going to try this sometime.

Showing Off NECA’s Dog Alien to its Fullest.

NECA makes some great figures. Their Dog Alien, for example, is arguably one of their best to date. It’s too bad NECA’s accessory display stand that comes with the figure is absolute shit. I mean it and just about everyone who owns one of these terrific figures will tell you the same thing “The figure is great! The display stand..? errrr…  not so much”.
So, I did a little hunting around and found some great little display stands made in China. They’re made of metal – so the C-clip won’t snap as easily as NECA’s flimsy excuse for a

The Secret Life of 1986 ALIENS Action Figures.

No ALIENS action figures or toys were made available as movie tie-in merchandise to accompany its release in 1986.  Nonetheless, action figures did play a role in the making of the movie.

This article outlines how one of the worst ALIEN action figures ever released contributed to one of the best action movies ever made.  You can read about it here.

Hiya Toys to Produce ALIEN: Covenant Figures.

Exclusive News from INFINITE EARTHS claims that the merchandising activity for ALIEN: Covenant is far from over. It appears that Hiya Toys will be releasing a pair of figures based on the movie some time in the near future.  Anticipated for release is the familiar form of the Covenant Alien and the pallid shape of the Neomorph.  Both are expected to be in the 1/18 scale.

Here’s what the News post has to say “Hiya Toys, the company behind the 1/18 scale series of Aliens: Colonial Marines action figures, will be producing new figures based off of Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant. Not a whole lot of details are available at this time, however we do know that the new line will be produced in collaboration with 20th Century Fox, and that Hiya will be kicking off the line with 1/18 scale versions of both the Xenomorph and the Neomorph seen in the film.”  A little more information is available on their initial News post.

ALIEN Dreaming.

I’ve been messing around with some Deep Dreaming software and mashing up one particular photo of the 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure.  I have been been getting some intriguing results.

I’ve had waaaay too much fun making these things and I’ve set up a gallery on the site for you to enjoy.  Check it out here.

I’ve also added a link to the ALIEN Dreaming gallery to the Gallery item on the drop down menu at the top of the front page.
