ALIEN Day 2021 is now behind us but the fun isn’t over yet. Not by a long shot. Following on the 2019 40th Anniversary celebration of ALIEN, this year will see the 35th Anniversary of its sequel, ALIENS. Released in US cinemas on July 18th 1986, ALIENS has arguably become the most popular movie in the entire series. It’s gearing up to be a fascinating year for ALIENS fans, we all know it. I am expecting a slew of new products, toys, collectibles and other goodies will be released by a wide range of manufacturers during the coming year. Why little to none of these items have been announced this past ALIEN Day is a mystery. Blame Covid, I guess. As usual, I’ll be very interested in what is released; maybe even post a review or two. That’s something that’s been somewhat lacking on this blog for about a year now. I have to find a way to rectify this situation. ALIENS 35th Anniversary may just provide the correct impetus to do so.
It looks like Funko have a new ALIENS POP! figure coming out soon. Here she is, Ellen Ripley with her rompin’, stomin’ bitch slappin’ powerloader, announced on ALIEN Day.It looks like this Super Size POP! item is intended to be a GameStop exclusive but it appears it will be available in all kinds of places. It is currently available right now as a pre-order and will probably become available at all places that sell Funko stuff (That is everywhere, really.) in June. Nice looking figure. Too bad the POP! stuff is a pass for me otherwise I’d be all over this item.
A major new addition has been made to the already lengthy article on MPC ALIEN kits. Today, I added no less than thirty six images of constructed and customised model kits. These new images comprise the collection belonging to Japanese ALIEN fan, Naoto Okawa. You can now view the entire gallery of new images. This update adds significantly more content to the article.
I love updating existing pages on the site with content like this. This particular addition was a real joy to present to the world and it expands the article on the MPC ALIEN kit to three pages. Fantastic stuff. Of course, this is all only possible with the kind permission of Naoto Okawa allowing me to do so. Thank you, Nao, for sharing your collection with us all. This is a genuinely remarkable and unique collection.
NECA have released the latest in their range of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures. A new, fully articulated Sewer Monster is now available for purchase. There is no doubt the morphology of this character bares more than just a passing resemblance to an Alien. So much a resemblance, several years back, NECA released a re-coloured AvP-R ALIEN action figure mimicking this character, dubbed the “Sewer Mutation Warrior Alien”. Now, NECA have returned with a full and complete fresh take on the TMNT Sewer Monster.
This item is available now for US purchasers and if you are an international buyer, you are also being catered to. Here’s what NECA have to say about this fantastic item “This Ultimate Pizza Monster towers over the Turtles at 9″ tall, and includes its juvenile Pizza Monster form, pizza in box and a remote control device. Comes in collector-friendly window box packaging.” I have no interest in TMNT stuff. Well, not really; but despite it’s fully licenced status, I am sure one of these jaundice things would look right at home standing aside all the other weird ass bootleg, ring-in and knock off ALIEN toys and figures I own. One day.
There are some things I love. I mean really, REALLY LOVE. I love dinosaurs. I love Aliens. I love toys. I love surrealist art. I love weird stuff made in Mexico. I absolutely love it when all of these things are tossed into a large melting pot to craft a single object like this weird bootleg dinosaur/Alien hybrid toy made in Mexico. It doesn’t happen often enough and it can’t get any better than this; but that’s just my opinion.I also love writing reviews. So if you want to witness my totally biased and fully subjective opinion on this outstanding example of JURASSIC WORST, then you’re in luck!
The page dedicated to MPC ALIEN model kits has expanded since first it was published little more than a week. So it’s time to announce an update. Response has been very good and welcome with some great samples of the assemble kit being added. Take this superb example by Rainer Engel:Yep. That’s the MPC ALIEN kit; and it sure has been put to some fantastic use. This item and others have been added to the expanding article; which is becoming lengthy and has now been divided into two separate pages.
I would like to thank the following people whose images appear in this article with their kind permission: Baptiste Coudert, JoAnne Esposito, Old Dogs Trading Post, Sabers, Ingo Siemon, Rainer Engel, Evan Wardwell, Lou Fusco and Terry Jones.
If you would like to see your assembled MPC ALIEN kit (regardless of your modeling skills) appear on page 2 of this article, please contact me. Credit will be provided.
Back in January 2018, ODDA Magazine, a high end biannual international fashion publication, printed an issue dedicated to Sigourney Weaver in issue No.15. At least one full page photo in that issue captures her holding onto an ALIEN action figure. It’s a great photo, too. Featuring Weaver, looking as trim as ever and smiling coyly as she dangles the Alien by her side in a featureless room with yellow roses littered about her feet.
Enough about Weaver, though. lol. The figure in question used in this photo is of more interest to me. This item is Super7’s ALIENS Classic Toy Edition, released in 2017. Super7 released four different variants of this Kenner tribute ALIENS item. A facsimile prototype first appeared at San Diego Comic Con in 2016, the Classic Toy Edition in 2017 (The item in Weaver’s hand), a translucent green version merely weeks after the Classic Toy Edition became available was released in 2017. Finally a faux bronze finish figure known as the Marine Ambush Edition appeared in 2019. All of which have since sold out at the Super7 webstore. Details of these items can be found on this page.
ODDA Magazine is a “biannual fashion magazine replete with editorials and interviews propelled by brilliant artistry. Spanning men’s and women’s high fashion, the luxury markets of style and art, and the legacy of creative freedom, ODDA is a compendium of photographic beauty steeped in design culture.” Sounds posh to me; nonetheless, if you want a copy of this issue try Amazon or eBay. Do ODDA handle back issues? Maybe. I dunno. Click on the link in the link above in this paragraph and find out, I guess.
Finally, I’ve had the time to add this lengthy exploration of MPC’s ALIEN model kit to HIDEOUS PLASTIC. This one has been important in several ways, but here it is now. All six editions of MPC’s ALIEN model kit released from 1979 to 2013. Lots of information if you want a helpful guide to find out if that MPC kit item you have looking at on eBay is really the one you are after. Also of great significance, the addition of this item marks the end of all the vintage items associated with the release of the 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure I wanted to include here. It’s taken me a long time – four and a half years – and this stage, Phase One, is now complete. Phase Two of HIDEOUS PLASTIC, which has already been well underway for a long time now, is about to move forward. That’s going to be a lot of fun, too. It will also take many years to complete but with this MPC item out of the way, it’s time to forge ahead and leave 1979 behind. What does Phase Two comprise? You’ll have to wait until April 26 to find out.
It looks like the first issue of Hachette’s over sized DIY ALIEN kit is now available from their webstore. Issues, 2,3 & 4 also look to be available, if not now, then soon. I’m not exactly sure as I don’t read French. Hachette’s ALIEN project is a weekly (or monthly?) part works subscription from the publisher. This first issue includes a number of goodies including the first piece, the upper skull, orbits and maxilla of what will become a half scale (four foot tall) replica of the Alien, complete with electronic and motorised parts. Swoon. I’ve been keeping an eye on this item for a while now. I don’t know if an English version will become available but let’s hope so. It looks like many other print goodies appear to accompany this wonderfully ambitious product.
Ya. These Loyal Subjects ALIEN Easater Eggs are definitely on my ever expanding want list. What? This is an Walmart exclusive?! This definitely not fair. Here’s an unboxing video of what you can expect. I love it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtpmGCx5sXc
Oh well, once again it’s a case of “not fair” in an unfair world. What else is new, huh? Nonetheless, that doesn’t stop these things from being fantastic. At this stage, I’m just happy they exist.
It looks Loyal Subjects are getting into the Spirit of Easter this year embracing the good old tried and true Easter Eggs product line, this time with a twist. These Easter Eggs contain two inch tall Aliens. This is nice. I’m all for toys for children based on my favourite R-rated movie series. These look like a real treat, too. These items will be exclusive to Walmart.Pre-order is now available for US$19.96 (plus postage) and packs of four ALIEN Easter Eggs are expected to arrive on April 1. Each egg will contain two random Aliens inside, making a total of eight lurid coloured critters per pack. Continue reading →
Over the next couple of weeks, I will be working to complete an article investigating the different versions of the MPC ALIEN model kit here on HIDEOUS PLASTIC. I know six variants were published. These appeared during the years 1979 (Three samples: US, Ca, Ja.), 1984, 1999 and finally one more was published as recently as 2013. If anyone has any additional information about these kits, or of any variants including unofficial, bootleg and/or garage pressings, please let me know. I am also very interested in publishing images of assembled versions of the kit. As assembled samples can vary wildly, it would be ideal to post a gallery of finished kit items in the article. If you have any assembled MPC ALIEN kits (from any year) and would like to have photos of them on display, please contact me. Facebookis good. Fully or partially assembled, raw unpainted or fully painted or in any state whatsoever are all welcome contributions at this stage.
Please keep in mind, if you do choose to share photos to be included, you will respectfully retain full copyright on all published work and you will also be credited appropriately in the article. Please don’t send me photos other people’s uncredited work. That’s not cool. Instead, please pass the word around and help make this piece as thorough as possible.
I expect to publish the article sometime in mid March. We’ll see how well that pans out. Right now I am just getting started with early drafts. I expect it to be quite lengthy.
This months premium Loot Crate DX will feature a snappy stylised version of warrant officer Ripley. Holding her signature flamethrower along with Jones the cat and his cat box mounted on a circular stand, they all feature as part of the exclusive figurine. Here’s what the monthly subscription provider has to say about this offering “This month’s theme is “FIERCE”. In celebration of Women’s History Month, we honor these badass game changers in this month’s Loot Crate DX crate: FIERCE! Unbox premium collectibles and gear featuring Wonder Woman, Alien’s Ripley, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and She-Ra!” I’m sure this new version of Ripley will look great alongside the Alien Next Door Loot Crate exclusive released some years back; or even be a sweet companion piece to the Candy Rock ALIENS iteration of Ripley holding a pulse rifle, also released some years back. …or next to one of those super cute TITANS versions of Ripley. You can’t have too much Ripley. Apparently.
The offer for this Loot Crate ends 3/19 at 9PM PT and is priced at US$66 per crate, plus shipping.
Coming soon from internationally renowned jigsaw puzzle and board game manufacturer, Ravensburger, later this year is what appears to be a challenging board game of survival aboard the Nostromo during the events of ALIEN. Here’s what the publisher has to say about the basic premise behind the gameplay, “Executive Officer Kane is dead and the Alien stalks the halls of the Nostromo. Players must work together in this cooperative strategy game to craft items, fulfill objectives and complete one of five final missions. Choose your next move carefully; the Alien could be just around the corner.” The game will be playable either solo or with five players. Adding Science Officer Ash as an NPC is an option if you want to raise the difficulty stakes. Sounds good so far. Continue reading →
A few years back, I purchased a bootleg vinyl ALIEN kit. This kit was unassembled and a recast of Tsukuda Hobby’s 1984 repressing of Kenner’s 1979 ALIEN toy. Since then, I’ve moved a couple of times, set up house, published a book and finally found the time to actually start and finish assembling this kit. As such, I’ve now been able to add a gallery of photos of the completed figure to the page dedicated this weird and wonderful unlicenced sample. This sure is one unusual figure as it is an unofficial re-re-release of the old 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy in vinyl kit form. Finally, not only is this curious do-it-yourself item now fully assembled, it also helps to complete a page I’ve been wanting to add a series of photos of the completed kit to HIDEOUS PLASTIC for what must be about three years now. He’s such a beauty, too. Go check him out.
If there is one thing I love about the ALIEN collector community, it’s diversity. The amazing range of collectible items ranges from small to large across four decades. While much of it is officially licenced and released to a surprisingly large and eager market, there’s also plenty of room – and demand, it appears – for a burgeoning bootleg output to exist as well.
For decades now, Mexico has taken the pole position in this regard. Not so much because their clandestine product is any good; but simply rather due to the opposite being true. Here, take this Predator riding an Alien crossed with a dinosaur for example. Isn’t this wild? Isn’t this outstanding? Isn’t this lurid, dubious and beguiling all the same breath? No one crafts unlicenced, head scratching product quite like they do in Mexico. Continue reading →
Just when you thought there’s no need for any more large scale statues featuring face ripping space monsters, XM Studios goes out of their way to prove everyone wrong. Revealed today, XM Studios one third scale Alien Hive Warrior can now be pre-ordered. Now, this is one seriously feature packed brute and here’s what the manufacturer has to declare about this sizeable offering, “XM Studios is excited to present Alien Hive-Warrior! An original take on the Xenomorph, XM worked closely with Simon lee aka Spiderzero (world-renowned sculptor, concept designer and character artist) to co-create the concept design of Alien Hive-Warrior. Drawing inspiration from the original creation, this Alien concept brings to life the dark elegance, biomechanical flow and visceral quality of the Xenomorph. The Alien Hive-Warrior emerges from the Hive, enveloped at the base by a pulsing hive entrance pregnant with various stages of the Xenomorph lifecycle – Eggs in stages of ripeness, freshly hatched Facehuggers crawling with single minded focus. It moves steady and silent, displaying an alien flow and dynamism to its movement.”
This cold cast porcelain “premium collectible statue features” a pair of interchangeable heads with one boasting the classic transparent dome shape over the skull and another featuring a ridged/textured head with protruding tongue. What’s more, this item is no slouch. This large piece mounted on a base surrounded by a clutch of Alien eggs, being swarmed by multiple facehuggers is a whopping 78cm tall and weighs in at 20 kg. As a final attraction, the paint application allows eggs on the base to glow faintly in the dark. Which is simply great because I really love glow in the dark stuff.
Availability appears to be limited to Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Price is SG$2299 (US$1728) and does not include shipping or customs fees or any other import tariffs. Not too bad, considering what is on offer here. Unfortunately, you may have to be prepared to import one from the other side of the planet via a third party retailer if you want one as US, UK and Australia exist outside the licence shipping zone.
Custom ALIEN art pieces and unofficial product are in abundance. Such art objects are liberally influenced by movies and yet carry no actual affiliation or authorised in any way. Here’s a superb WTF? example that can’t be easily ignored. This Naked Alien statuette designed by artist, Paul Yunin, is available on Etsy. The price tag is US$114.75. The Weird is strong with this one! According to the listing, this “sexy curvy naked figure”, featuring what appears to be an ALIEN Resurrection action figure head mounted on an erotically modeled female form, is a 9.5 inch tall hand made piece constructed from resin, gypsum, metal and painted. As to whether that quality is enough to warrant owning one of these tacky statuettes will be dictated by the US$114 price tag. Get your piece of lurid junk, now! Is this item of questionable merit worth getting? Sure it is. It’s great – for all the wrong reasons. Either way, for better or for worse, you know this item will be a major focal point of discussion in your collection. …and that’s a good thing, right?
One of the great and remarkable features of the ALIEN community is the level of creativity you can find. Custom made PEZ dispensersare a fine example of how fans want to fill a void. These custom ALIEN Resurrection Newborn Alien PEZ dispensers have now been added to the page dedicated to this odd form of expression. This page continues to grow. I’m seeing even more content that I will need to add at some point. Eventually, it will happen. In the meantime, enjoy these oddities made by a third party. PEZ may never actually release such things officially as they are primarily marketed towards children – and the R-rated ALIEN property falls outside of that mandate. So, it’s up to us, kiddies, to make it happen.
Let’s kick off our first article for the year with something special. Daniel Yu is a sculptor, artist and all round fan of ALIEN movies. Combining these interests into a single hobby results in repainting ALIEN ReAction figures, lending a new, higher detailed ambience to Super7’s retro themed 3.75 inch collectible ALIEN toys.I had the opportunity to talk to Daniel recently about his hobby. He shared a ton of info along with photos of his work. There’s nothing quite like talking to a fellow fan, especially one in possession of a creative streak and a preparedness to discuss their hobby.
