KATblog – Kenner ALIENS Mini Dropship.

Ah, first post for the new year! Let’s make it supportive of another Kenner ALIEN enthusiasts efforts, hey. Over at The Kenner Aliens Toy blog, you will find details about Kenner’s cancelled and subsequently re-purposed SPACE MARINE MINI DROP SHIP VEHICLE.Back in the 1990s, this would have been a great companion piece of military hardware for Space Marine Ripley and her fellow troops to combat those pesky xenomorphs, had it gone into production. Thank you Eric Fischer for the insight into this item, which was cancelled prior to full production but ultimately be resurrected as part of a completely different product line at a later date. Great stuff!

We also have a companion article exploring this enticing unproduced Kenner Mini Dropship toy here on HIDEOUS PLASTIC you may like to check out.

UPDATED: Gentle Giant ALIEN Prototypes.

Images of a pair of twenty four inch tall Gentle Giant product development samples have been added to the section dedicated to ALIEN prototype figures. Featured on this new page is a 3D printed concept ALIEN piece painted blue. Also included are images of an artist’s proof copy of what would eventually be released as Gentle Giant’s inaugural glow in the dark ALIEN action figure. The glow in the dark figure is just one of a series of four oversized Kenner ALIEN tribute items Gentle Giant released during 2014 and 2015.  It doesn’t end there. if you are curious about how these two over-sized work in progress brutes are further intimately related to each other, you can read about them here. At a solid two foot tall apiece, these outstanding samples are fantastic.

Prototype Gallery Update: Call and Battle Scarred Alien.

Another update made to the Prototype Gallery section of HIDEOUS PLASTIC.  Today’s addition fills in a couple of holes of previously unrepresented characters, including  early production samples of Kenner’s 1997 ALIEN: Resurrection Battle Scarred Alien and that movie’s female android, Call.

Once again, posting these images has been made possible by the kind permission of Derek Ho.  Thank you, Sir.

Prototype Gallery Update: 1979 MPC ALIEN Kit.

Today I have added a new area to the Prototypes Gallery.  This new entry is for the one of the oldest of all ALIEN product lines, the 1979 MPC ALIEN model kit. The wonderful old kit makes it’s debut in this section with a pair of images.

These images represent a proof copy sheet of the original package prior to full production printing and an early work in progress transparency illustration of the Alien character as it appears in the kit’s assembly instruction sheet.

These images have been added with the permission of Derek Ho.  Thank you once again for sharing these unique pieces with us all.

Prototype Gallery Update: 1993 Arachnid Alien.

In continuing our current interest in rare and unique items from the bygone era of Kenner’s ALIENS toys, we are pleased to add some more samples of the 1993 Arachnid Alien to the page dedicated to this odd action figure. Most notably is the item on the left:

This particular grey painted kit bashed concept version of the toy is largely assembled from parts cannibalised from Kenner’s earlier Gorilla Alien, notably the head and legs.  Images of this unique curiosity grace HIDEOUS PLASTIC with the kind permission of Derek Ho.

Prototype Gallery Update: (Giant) Queen Facehugger.

Another fantastic set of images of a unique prototype piece is posted today on HIDEOUS PLASTIC.  Kenner’s 1993 (Giant) Queen Facehugger action figure now has its own page with description and photos.  While many prototypes are cast in a hodge podge of miscellaneous colours that just happen to be handy at the time, this exquisite clear resin hard copy adopts the alluring presence of a crystal scorpion.  Beautiful yet deadly.

Photographs of this extraordinary and beautiful piece are courtesy of Marc Cawiezel.  Thank you Marc for sharing this incredible item with us all.

Prototype Gallery Update: Gorilla Alien and Hatchling Accessory.

Today’s update involves 2 already established pages dedicated to ALIEN prototype figures – Kenner’s Gorilla Alien action figure and Kenner’s Queen Alien action figure accessory, the Deadly Chest Hatchling.  As both these pages are already extant, these additions help to expand those areas with fresh images of each item. Both pages have also been re-organised to better accommodate this extra content.  Check ’em out.  Gorilla Alien and  the Queen Alien Deadly Chest Hatchling accessory.

Adding fresh content to the prototype section of HIDEOUS PLASTIC is definitely a great privilege I get to enjoy.  It’s with great pleasure and gratitude I get to thank both Derek Ho and Eric Fischer for their permission to use their images in these updates.  Thank you for your kind support, Guys!

Prototype Gallery Update: Mini Dropship and Stuff.

Today I am posting what I am hoping to be the first of some major updates on the ALIEN Prototype section of this website.  The welcome additions include images of Kenner’s unproduced Mini Dropship, some extra images to their 1997 ALIEN Resurrection Newborn figure; along with some new content added to the page dedicated to ALIEN Resurrection facehugger accesssories.  All fantastic stuff as you can see in this preview image right here:

While a ton of good stuff has been added today, I am hoping to post more soon.  Nonetheless, for this round of updates I would like to thank the people whose image contributions come from Derek Ho and Eric Christian Magee and have been added to respective pages.

Thank you, Guys!  I am always appreciative of the generosity of community members for providing permission to use their content on HIDEOUS PLASTIC.

Prototype Gallery Update: Space Marines Ripley & Drake.

It’s time to start filling in some gaps in representing significant missing characters in our ever increasing galleries dedicated to Kenner ALIEN action figure and toy prototypes.  It doesn’t get any more significant than adding test shots and other samples of Lt. Ripley.  Here she is, prototypes of 1992 Kenner ALIENS Space Marine Lt. Ripley.

Also being added today are additional images of Space Marine Drake to his already established section dedicated to prototypes and test shots of this character.

Fantastic stuff and many thanks to Derek Ho for his kind permission to use these images.

Prototype Gallery Update: Deadly Chest Hatchling.

Today we are pleased to add yet another fine example to our expanding section dedicated to Kenner prototype and production samples.  This time it’s the curious accessory piece which was included with the 1992 Queen Alien action figure, the Deadly Chest Hatchling.

It may be small, at only 3 inches long, but it’s a fascinating little piece.  Fortunately, we have been able to post images of a pair of samples of this accessory.  A hardcopy piece and a first shot, both providing an an insight into the work intensive process of toy production.

Prototype Gallery Update: 1979 Kenner ALIEN Tail.

Adding content to the Prototype Gallery pages on HIDEOUS PLASTIC is always a joy.  Doubly so when such samples are from the very first 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure.

This item is a resin hard copy of the figure’s tail.  It’s broken in a few places but nonetheless it is a welcome addition to the Gallery page dedicated to the now 40 year old production samples of this incredible children’s toy.

This image was kindly provided by Derek Ho.  Thank you.

Prototype Gallery Update – ALIEN Resurrection Facehuggers.

This pair of creepy crawly items appeared among our last Prototype Gallery Update featuring Kenner’s 1997 Newborn figure. I thought it would be appropriate to add them to their own page. Their owner, Steve Dwyer, agreed to take more photos of them and share them with us all. So here they are, now occupying their very own gallery.

This pair of facehuggers are test shots of accessories that accompanied the Newborn (Left) and Call (Right) as part of Kenner’s 1997 range of ALIEN Resurrection action figures. More images have been added to the site and can be found here. Enjoy!

Thank you for these images, Steve.

PROTOTYPE and BOOTLEG Gallery Updates.

Today’s update includes 2 very different figures. The quality and features of both of these items range from the sublime to the ridiculous, from uniquely crafted to the poorly cast; and from the Beginning of the licenced production line to the End of a pirated one.

You will find photos of a test shot of the Kenner (Hasbro) 1997 ALIEN Resurrection newborn figure added to its dedicated page on the Prototype Gallery.

At the polar opposite, you can also find photos of a pair of bagged bootleg Kenner Scorpion figures added to the article dedicated to ALIEN Bootlegs and Knock Offs.

Each of them are amazing and represent extreme opposites of the Collector spectrum. Thank you Steve Dwyer for the use of these images.

Prototype Gallery Update – Xenopod Dragonfly Alien

I’m always happy to post new content into the Prototype ALIEN action figure gallery and this one is a beauty!

Here is one of the oddities known as a ‘Xenopod Alien’ or ‘Locust Alien’.  Kenner were experimenting with this concept in various forms during the mid 1990s and this 4 winged variant sample has now been added to the page dedicated to these prototypes.

Thank you Steve Dwyer for sharing these images with us all

Prototype Gallery Update – 1994, Swarm Alien.

I’m still in the process of tidying up my former residence.  Nonetheless, I still want to take some time to post quick updates on the site.  Here is a welcome update to the ever growing selection of Kenner ALIEN prototype section.

The Swarm Alien was one of Kenner’s more unusual ALIENS action figures the company released during the 1990’s.  You’ll find images of a stunning prototype sample of this peculiar toy right here.

A very special thanks to Steve Dwyer for sharing images of this odd Kenner piece from his collection.

Custom Made 3.75 Inch ‘Prototype’ ALIEN Figure.

San Diego Comic Con 2018 is almost upon us and will open this weekend with Super7’s con exclusive Hammerhead ALIEN ReAction figure making its debut. The soon to be available ReAction figure draws its influences from the unique kit bashed prototype  Alien action figure Kenner created as a visualisation exercise to prepare the company to manufacture their new 3.75 inch products to be released in 1980.

As the original Alien prototype utilises a Star Wars hammerhead figure as a base for the production sample item, it’s easy to see the attraction of pursuing a creative endeavor to create a custom version. After all, the Star Wars Hammerhead action figure is relatively easy to come by and all you need is the preparedness to modify it, add a few characteristic Alien features and paint it black. Prototype Gallery Update – 1992, Gorilla Alien.

Ah, it’s been a while since I’ve had the joy of announcing any new character additions to this site’s Prototype Gallery.  It’s with great pleasure then that Kenner’s Gorilla Alien joins the ranks of production samples and prototypes.

This figure has definitely a popular item among fans and collectors and a number of prototype samples of Kenner’s 1992 Gorilla Alien have been added for your pleasure.

Special thanks to Derek Ho for his kindness in allowing me to post these images.
