ALIEN Romulus – VHS Release.

It looks like there’s going to be another home release for ALIEN Romulus. Mentioned on the movie’s Alien Romulus Facebook page the movie will also be available for VHS. Yes. That’s correct, VHS. A long redundant format but nonetheless an essential and important technology in the history of home entertainment. This will be a limited edition release of the movie. I wonder if it will be locked into NTSC format? This follows on the tail of a previously released promotional excerpt of the movie sent to News outlets on VHS tape a couple of months ago. This release is no doubt intended to celebrate the anachronistic 1970s and 1980s style tech prominently on display throughout the movie. No additional details or price is available. I’m still waiting for an official announcement regarding a physical release on DVD or BluRay to be made here in Australia. While it may be a fun item to add an old school video cassette to any collection, a retro VHS tape requiring prehistoric (Anything before the internet was publicly available) hardware to work just won’t be adequate.

ALIEN Romulus – Aspen Beer.

Ah, I’m still finding some officially licenced ALIEN Romulus merchandise I previously missed. Let’s add this one to the front page. It’s a pretty good one. Californian brewery, Angel City, promoted their specially licenced ‘Weylan Yutani Aspen Beer’ back in August. This blonde Ale is being sold in cans that mimics the Aspen Beer can props appearing in the original ALIEN movie and also in the recently released ALIEN Romulus.
This special edition brew is available directly from the Angel City Brewery web store. Here’s a few words from the manufacturer, “We’ve been commissioned by Weyland-Yutani to begin producing its signature Aspen Beer, right on schedule for the release of Alien: Romulus. Soon, you too can join the company crew by sipping on Aspen Beer brewed by Angel City at select theaters & right here at Angel City Brewery starting on Tuesday, August 13th.” I always loved how Brett and Parker consumed a large amount of this stuff in ALIEN. I mean, just in case you missed it, look at this scene and see how many empty cans of Aspen Beer litters their work space – and there’s more empty cans than those visible in this one screenshot. Brilliant! Aspen Beer must be a true brew!

ALIEN Romulus – Popcultcha NECA Pre-Order.

As a resident of Australia, it always excites me to see any ALIEN content released in this country. A lot of content simply does not make it to these shores but luckily, there are some independent specialty stores that will provide some much anxiety reducing relief in this regard. Once again, Popcultcha has stepped up and already listed pre-orders for the upcoming ALIEN Romulus 7 inch scale Reel Toys action figures

Here’s a couple of links directly to the pre-order pages:

Aside from confirmation of being available in Australia, we now have some other details of significant note. The price for these items will be Au$79.99 each but a sweet pre-order Au$8 discount incentive is being applied to these items. It would also probably be a good idea to pre-order these items anyway as we have seen the madness surrounding the ALIEN Romulus popcorn buckets escalate wildly to hundreds of (US) dollars due to scarcity of product and scalpers buying them in bulk to flog on eBay. …and NECA didn’t even make those buckets! The other welcome detail we have gleaned from Popcultcha is the release date. These items are expected to become available in January 2025, around six months from now. Needless to say, I’ll be looking forward to seeing these things get released here.

ALIEN Romulus – Phoenix Rising Cosmetics.

Looking to express yourself with some ALIEN Romulus themed make up? Sure. go ahead. Phoenix Rising Cosmetics have announced pre-orders for their officially licenced range of make up. It appears they will be releasing two palettes containing a range of colours. The facehugger palette features ‘future’, ‘parasite’, ‘scream’ and ‘space’ themes while the Alien (Covenant) head boasts shades of ‘heroine’, ‘slime’, ‘terrifying’, ‘synthetic’, ‘alarm’ and ‘scavenger’. Someone definitely had way too much fun designing these palettes and tones.

I’ve never worn make up in in my life. Got nothing against it – just never felt the need to do so. Nonetheless, this looks like a quality product. Phoenix Rising state their fully licenced product lines, of which the ALIEN Romulus make up collection is one of many, “…are also highly pigmented & super long lasting as they were specifically formulated for stage and screen.” I’m good with that.

ALIEN Romulus – NECA Packages Revealed.

We’ve known for a few weeks now popular action figure maker NECA will be releasing at least two products in their long running ALIEN product linw as part of their REEL TOYS range. Today NECA revealed the package designs for both the Scorched Xenomorph and the Accessory pack with pre-orders now live from their online store. Here’s what the great folk at NECA have to say “Alien: Romulus is in theaters NOW! Celebrate the Alien: Romulus premiere with our Alien: Romulus collection, featuring the Ultimate Scorched Xenomorph Action Figure and Accessory Set. Both products are available for pre-order on the NECAStore.com and from your favorite NECA retailer!” I am hoping these items will become available here in Australia. I imagine demand for new NECA ALIEN content will be high. On top of that, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen anything based on movie content. These look great, too. I love the red framed windowed black box art. Hand ’em over.

REVIEWED – ALIEN Romulus.

I was lucky enough to be able to catch a preview screening of ALIEN Romulus here in Melbourne. Go and read my review of this eagerly anticipated movie. This is a conscientiously spoiler free review so dive in deep if you haven’t seen it yet.
ALIEN movies don’t come around often enough as far as I am concerned. This one is a good one. A little heavy handed on the fan service and boasting familiar scenarios, sure. Regardless, none of those problems stop it from being a fine space adventure worthy of the ALIEN moniker. I liked it.

ALIEN Romulus – BullAirs Custom Sneakers.

Sneaker customiser BULLAIRS, are now accepting pre-orders for their BullAlien footwear. These are custom painted, Nike Air Max 90 sneakers. These individually prepared and crafted shoes will cost US$400 per pair.
Here’s a disclaimer from the manufacturer, “ALL PRODUCTS ARE FAN ART BULLAIRS NYLLC 2024 CLAIM THE LEGAL RIGHT OF FAIR USE NO OFFICIAL TRADEMARK BRANDING OR LOGOS ARE FEATURED ON SAID PRODUCT.” Which means these are not licenced product but are nonetheless still worthy of some attention keen on some unique footwear. Which I have no problem with. I am for equally supporting independent creatives as much as I support Official product. Go pre-order yours! Pre-orders close on August 13. Well. Today some time, I guess.

ALIEN Romulus – Something in the Water Ale.

Craft brewer, SIREN CRAFT BREW based in the United Kingdom, are making available a fully licenced, special collector’s edition “Something in the Water” ale to tie in to the release of ALIEN Romulus. This 6% alcohol beverage is available to order right now in single cans (GBP5.00) and a gift box of 4x cans with a patterned tumbler tasting glass (GBP28.00).

Here’s a few notes from the manufacturer “A very special, limited edition run of our red berry sour, made especially to celebrate the release of Alien: Romulus in cinemas August 16 Although there is something in the water, we can promise you that it is nothing extraterrestrial or sinister! We load it up with cherries and red berries for delicious, refreshing fruitiness and tangy sweet and sour flavours.” Not a big beer drinker myself but I wouldn’t mind one of these tinnies on hand, even if it were empty. Just to add to my collection of weird ALIEN goodies.

ALIEN Romulus – Rock ’em Socks.

Rock ’em Socks, a footwear manufacturer based in Orlando, Florida, will be jumping on the ALIEN Romulus bandwagon to bring us three different pairs of ALIEN Romulus themed socks. Specialising in pop culture and custom merchandise, these upcoming socks will be available from the maker soon, directly from their website. No listing is available just yet but they did share this image on facebook recently.
The socks feature three distinct designs. The classic “FREE HUGS” facehugger pattern, a blood red “XENOMORPH” design and a third pair featuring both facehuggers and xenomorphs against a hexagonal background. These socks are wild! They also appear ideal to be mixed and matched rather than worn as straight pairs. Love ’em.

ALIEN Romulus – Alamo Drafthouse Enamel Pin.

The American Alamo Drafthouse Cinema chain, famous for serving dinner and drinks during the movie, has released an ALIEN Romulus themed menu you can order while watching the movie. Also exclusively available to this movie theater chain will be a set of limited edition enamel pins. A video has been released on X showing of all off the menu items and the three pin set.

ALIEN Romulus – Popcorn bucket SOLD OUT.

Word has it that various Cinemark outlets selling the much anticipated ALIEN Romulus popcorn bucket, a replica of the Alien head, has already sold out in many cinemas. Quite an accomplishment considering the movie won’t be released until August 15. A solid two weeks remain until release date and these curious items have disappeared from theaters fast and already started to reappear on eBay for significantly more than original retail price. The original retail price being around US$30.
These highly anticipated items are limited and in very high demand. It’s no surprise that these sold out items are now appearing on eBay at tremendously inflated prices. Such is the fate of such collectibles. Get in quick or be prepared to be priced gouged in ways that should be declared criminal. After all, it’s just a plastic Alien head! …that you can use to stow popcorn in! The wild, woolly and weird component of the product has made it an instant bestseller – and it is now SOLD OUT! at least full two weeks prior to the movie’s release. If you want to be brave enough and purchase one on eBay, then here ya go.

ALIEN Romulus – Facehugger Phone Holder.

Here’s a cool video posted by GeekCulture on Facebook of what appear to be an ALIEN Romulus FACEHUGGER PHONE HOLDER. No details are available other than the video.

It appears to be a fully licenced product, complete with black professionally made window box packaging and legitimate 20th Century Studios markings and badges. The holder itself appears to be fully appointed with wire cores inserted into all of its eight limbs and tail. This makes the item capable of being manipulated in a wide variety of poses and attach to anything it can wrap its legs and/or tail around. No details of the manufacturer, pricing or availability accompany the GeekCulture video on Facebook.

ALIEN Romulus – NECA Action Figure Pre-order.

NECA have made a full reveal of their ALIEN Romulus action figure line up along with your opportunity to pre-order them on their website. The release includes two separate packages, each containing multiple accessories. First up is the major Alien appearing in the movie, Scorched. Here’s NECA’s description of this figure, which is probably the largest accessory load-out of any NECA Alien figure to date, “NECA’s Ultimate action figure version of the Scorched Xenomorph stands over 9 inches tall with 23 points of articulation and features an opening jaw with an extending inner mouth and wired tail. The screen-accurate figure comes with interchangeable dome parts for a drone Xenomorph Warrior look, perfect for army building! Other accessories include interchangeable hands, facehugger and chestbursters with wired tails, and a display stand for dynamic posing. Comes in window box packaging.”The second reveal features an accessory pack largely comprised of small alien forms and the cocooned Big Chap. Here’s NECA’s list of contents for this accessory pack, you’ll find the “Model F44AA Pulse Rifle toy accessory (fits 7” scale figures), Asteroid with fossilized Xenomorph XX121, Facehugger and Chestburster with wired tails for posing, Cryo frame case with Facehugger and interchangeable damaged plastic parts, Facehugger that can go around the heads of most NECA 7-inch scale action figures.”

I guess they couldn’t fit all this cool, fun stuff inside a single package with the Scorched Alien. Nonetheless, pre-orders for both the Scorched figure and the ALIEN Romulus accessory pack are now available for pre-order directly from NECA.

ALIEN Romulus – NECA Figures Revealed.

We’ve just had our first peek into what NECA will be producing in terms of action figures based on ALIEN Romulus. TOYARK has a gallery of photos NECA has on display for the San Diego Comic Con preview night. There is at least one previous unseen reveal among the lot. At the very least, it’s a small reveal with big implications.
Along with a fully articulated Romulus Alien figure NECA appears to be releasing a handful of other accessories. Of particular note is the confirmation of the long rumored presence of the original Alien creature in the movie, encased in a protective resin-like cocoon. We witness this mysterious object being recovered during one of the trailers and here, the contents are fully revealed. It is definitely, 100% Giger’s original designed creature we last saw being expelled by the Narcissus engines – and likely the source of all the creatures present aboard Romulus’ Renaissance station. I wonder if both halves of the cocoon will be included? Various small Alien forms such as a pair of facehuggers, a chestburster along with the new rifle we are already relatively familiar, also appear to be included as part of this line up. No mention of any human(oid) characters appear in TOYARK’s gallery or post; just go and check out their gallery for many more images of NECA’s ALIEN Romulus (and PREY) figures from SDCC24’s preview night. No doubt we’ll be seeing a ton of new photos from con attendees pop up online during the next 24 hours. The Big Chap is back! Hoo-boy!

Sure took yer time, Kiddo. Forty five years, to be exact. Nonetheless, loving the vibe.

ALIEN Romulus – MARVEL Comic Announced.

An ALIEN Romulus prelude comic is being planned for release by MARVEL and offers to chronicle events that unfold prior to those depicted in the movie. One of the core contents of this new story committed to sequential narrative reveals secrets of the film’s main creatures. This is a unique one shot comic with two variant covers. Here is the main cover art by Leinil Francis Yu (Right) depicting the original 1979 Alien monster; along with Björn Barends alternate cover (Left) featuring Federez’ new Alien creature.
Here’s some info about this upcoming publication, “Marvel’s one-shot will take place prior to the events of the film, providing an illuminating backstory behind the film’s main threat. Made in close partnership with Director Fede Alvarez and frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues, both of whom wrote Alien: Romulus, the comic is a must-have companion to one of the most highly anticipated films of the summer.” Not a big fan of comics myself these days but this item can certainly be treated as a prologue of sorts to ALIEN Romulus due to the director and writer of the movie being involved in its production. You can pre-order the upcoming ALIEN: Romulus comic at your local comic shop today and it will be available on store shelves on October 16, 2024.

NEW SECTION – Movie Reviews.

Every now and then I add a new area to HIDEOUS PLASTIC as it continues to slowly grow. Right now, there’s a bundle of long established, well populated sections dedicated to toys and action figures, as this site is dedicated to these items. This isn’t a movie review site per se; so there’s not much content in this regard. ALIEN Romulus is being released next month and I will be reviewing it here. As part of preparing the site for other content based on this upcoming movie, a NEW section dedicated to ALIEN movies has been added. For fast and easy access to this new area, an image with a link to the new section, MOVIE REVIEWS has also been added to the sidebar at right of this site’s front page. Scroll down, if you need to. It’s there.
I reviewed ALIEN Covenant upon release back in 2017 and it’s already been added to the Movie Reviews section. This means at least some content is present and it’s not going to be a blank slate until mid August when ALIEN Romulus is released. Nonetheless, the review for the hotly anticipated new movie is coming. I’ll post News of the review when it’s ready. That will happen sometime around mid August. I’m looking forward to this movie. I’ll be here to provide my opinion of it then.
