ALIEN Romulus – Popcorn Bucket.

The much discussed but largely unknown ALIEN Romulus xenomorph head popcorn bucket has enjoyed a full reveal in a video released on X, today. The Cinemark bucket features a hinged, flip top lid that can be used to stow a sizeable amount of popcorn inside.
The bucket clearly resembles an Alien head. Curiously, it is not based on the designs we have seen to date appearing in ALIEN Romulus. The bucket design appears to be lifted directly from the creatures seen in ALIEN Covenant. A great design in its own right – just seven years too late. Nonetheless, this looks like a wild item for a popcorn bucket. Once contents are consumed, it could be used to stow any number of things inside. Wads of cash, your stash of weed, your old socks; or maybe, y’know? Just leave it on display in your collection. This isn’t the only Alien themed popcorn bucket we’ll see become available upon release of ALIEN Romulus. Another bucket featuring a facehugger attached to the outside is also known to become available. Release information, prices and availability are unknown at this stage for either of these items.

ALIEN Romulus – Promotional Display Statues.

An image of a life size promotional display statue of one of the creatures appearing in ALIEN Romulus has been posted on X. These statues have started to appear in Regal Cinema foyers in the United States. How many of these statues appearing in America’s second largest movie theater chain is unknown but more images are bound to hit the internet real soon now. From what is known in trailers and other official sources, this statue appears to be an accurate depiction of the movie monsters appearing in ALIEN Romulus. There’s a lot to unpack here but the original Giger design is demonstrably present and features the iconic elongated head, with the skull visible beneath the carapace. The original Giger designed six fingered hands, clavicles and thigh details are also weighty in this design. The heels and lengthened feet with raised ankles demonstrates ALIEN Isolation is also being represented here with digitigrade legs and elongated tail spike. Of peculiar interest are the raised claw spurs appearing on the toes of the creature. This detail is evocative of one of Giger’s early abandoned concept designs of similarly clawed feet for the creature that appears in ALIEN 3.

What a stunning re-interpretation of the creature; and it’s likely to not be the only one appearing in the upcoming movie. NECA are going to have a field day with this production, that’s for sure. I can’t wait to see what their line up for ALIEN Romulus will be. Typically, it releases its waves of 7 inch figures in sets of 3; and a possible 1/4 scale release as well. Either way, this scorched head Alien is no doubt a headliner in NECA’s product range. You just have to wonder, though; how many of these full size 1:1 scale statues have been made? …and what happens to them once the cinema chain has finished its season for this movie..?

ALIEN Romulus – TOTAL FILM Reveal.

TOTAL FILM magazine has an exclusive cover image of the ALIEN Romulus creature on near full display on its upcoming July edition. Two variant covers will be released including an exclusive subscriber version (Left); and a regular newsstand version (Right) which will appear on shelves Thursday, 18 July. You can preorder a copy online now.

The latest issue will heavily feature the upcoming movie, here’s some details regarding its content, “Writer/director Fede Alvarez and his bright young cast are taking the ultimate sci-fi horror series back to bloody basics with an ‘interquel’ set between Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens. Inside the issue, Alvarez explains how he’s been inspired by both of those titans of the genre to craft a new franchise instalment that promises fear, practical effects, and surprises galore. It’s the perfect primer on the kind of sequel that Alien fans have waited decades for.”

This issue is significant for other reasons. This is the first full public reveal of how the creatures in the movie will appear. All the details from the original 1979 design are present, albeit tweaked to varying degrees. From the elongated head to the barb tipped tail, all of the original features are carried over from Giger’s familiar design and wrought into a fresh interpretation with varying changes. All the dorsal crests are present, just modified and shortened. The spine and tail details are amplified. The “chicken drumstick” elbow spurs are present. It’s all there. From this image we can determine this Alien design features raised ankles indicative of an ALIEN Isolation “Stompy” styled digitigrade leg morphology; a minor departure from the original flat footed plantigrade Alien. Prior images of the head have shown us the transparent carapace and vacant eye orbits beneath.

The new batch of NECA, Prime 1 Studios and other licencees for ALIEN Romulus action figures are going to be adopting these features. That’s definitely something to look forward to when they finally see release.

ALIEN Romulus – Funko POP! Figures Coming.

A slow trickle of product news relating to the upcoming ALIEN Romulus movie is gradually picking up pace. Funko POP News! on X have shared an image of what appears to be ALIEN Romulus Funko POP! figures we can expect to see being released in relation to the movie. The upcoming line up includes Rain Carradine (Cailee Spaeny) and her synthetic ‘brother’, Andy (David Jonsson) along with a pair of Alien characters.
There’s a few interesting details of note here, especially in regard to both Alien characters. The six fingered hands and four toed feet of the original ALIEN creature have made a return. Not withstanding Funko’s stylised presentation of their figures, these shared  morphological features reflect an as yet undisclosed origin of these creatures and their relationship with the original creature as it appeared in 1979’s ALIEN. A scarred carapace along with a few other subtle differences such as pronated hands along with an alternate stance suggest these two pieces are intended to be two different creatures we can expect to appear in the movie and not just a pair of variants of the same Alien character. We’ve seen similarly defined scarred Aliens before. Most notable, appearing in the 2004 ALIEN vs PREDATOR movie where Grid became a recognisable ‘hero’ character with distinct net shaped scars burned across his head and shoulders to differentiate him from other creatures appearing in that movie. The scars serve the purpose of being One to stand out from the crowd, no less.

ALIEN Romulus – Full Trailer Released.

Over two million views since its release six hours ago and featuring a lot of cramped corridors, flashing lights and squishy sounds, the full length ALIEN Romulus trailer is now available to view on YouTube. It’s all there. Facehuggers all over the place, an oral rape scene, a chestburster victim becoming acutely aware of their imminent demise and hints of full grown Aliens hunting down their prey. All of these events await a small ship full of hapless victims who board the abandoned orbital platform, the Renaissance Station. Loving what I am seeing so far. There’s just enough story hinted at within the trailer for the viewer to know that some very yucky things happen to a small group of poor unfortunate souls without too much of the narrative being revealed or blatantly spelled out.

Homages, homages …and more homages, both visually and aural to previous entries in the series help to chronologically place the movie firmly between ALIEN and ALIENS. While ALIEN Romulus is directed by Fede Alvarez, this is clearly a Ridley Scott production. His influence is stamped all over the trailer. It’s complete with sound, editing and other signature environmental details we expect from a Scott Free production. Mechanical irises in a variety of forms appear in all of his ALIEN movies and this one is not lacking in this regard. Trailer looks fantastic and it appears Alvarez has been a worthy choice for directing his own story with this new entry.

Looking more promising than ever, I am keen to see this movie. ALIEN Romulus releases globally on August 16, 2024.

ALIEN Romulus – Popcorn Bucket Leak?

This image has been leaked online via The Garfield Movie News on X (formerly twitter). It claims to represent the popcorn bucket that will be available when ALIEN Romulus is released. News of such an item was leaked a few days ago and now we may have our very first glimpse of what this item may actually be.
Bucket leak or just a leaky bucket? We don’t know. Nothing public has been announced or released regarding this item nor any verification this leak is legitimate. Leaks of this nature can fall either side of the truth. Nonetheless, there’s some interesting features to be queried here. The head design appears to be inspired by the Protomorphs appearing in ALIEN Covenant. Maybe, the creatures in ALIEN Romulus share some design elements with that iteration of the Alien? We’ll have to wait and see.

I’m not even sure how this Alien head is supposed to function as a popcorn bucket. It does look like it straps onto the hand as earlier reports have claimed. As to its purpose as a bucket? Does the dome lift off the top of the head to reveal the popcorn inside? I hope to see more of this item as time passes. It’s a weird one. We like weird. Just not taking this item too seriously right now. After all, what’s there to get excited about a popcorn bucket?

ALIEN Romulus – Popcorn Bucket.

We’ve probably seen the very first hint of merchandise we can expect for ALIEN Romulus. Over on X (formerly twitter), this post was made by Exhibitor Relations Co on April 10, indicating our first glimpse into what we can expect to become available when the movie is released.

While nothing definitive is revealed here, it does hint at how much of a hit movie ALIEN Romulus is expected to be. Such marketing and sales tie-ins usually accompany a movie release expected to be favorably received by the public. Favorably enough for audience members to purchase a popcorn bucket before people enter the cinema to see the movie. DUNE Part 2 was a phenomenal success with the popcorn bucket made to look like an open Arrakis sandworm maw, made controversial due to its suggestive nature. What exactly can we anticipate from an ALIEN themed “popcorn container” that “attaches to your forearm”? Your guess is as good as mine.

We’ll have to wait and see; but one thing is for certain, we are only just beginning to see the crank handle start to turn on the ALIEN Romulus merchandise machine. In less than two weeks, ALIEN Day April 26 will be upon us and I expect any number of ALIEN Romulus announcements to be made. I’ll be around to cover any such merchandise right on this blog. Check in on ALIEN Day to see what’s covered here at HIDEOUS PLASTIC.

ALIEN Romulus is being released on August 16, 2024. Just a few months from now.

ALIEN Romulus – Teaser Trailer Released.

The last week has seen some excited activity across the ALIEN fan community with anticipated news of an upcoming trailer for the new ALIEN Romulus movie being expected. Such excitement, driven by leaked (but unverified) information involving the potential plot of the new movie detailing the discovery of the original creature from 1979’s ALIEN floating in space. It is brought to the Romulus station, where aboard the deep space biological research facility, a sample of Engineer pathogen is extracted from the creature. Staff reverse engineering the substance create a new generation of hostile alien forms to serve as the catalyst for ALIEN Romulus’ main narrative.

Further alluding to the trailer’s then imminent release, yesterday ALIEN Romulus director Fede Alvarez released a single word on instagram, “TOMORROW”. Today, the eagerly awaited minute long teaser trailer has become available to view on YouTube.

While little to no indication of prior leaked plot details are present in the trailer, classic ALIEN iconography is prominently present throughout. Art direction reminiscent of the original movie, facehuggers – lots of facehuggers and what appears to be early model pulse rifles appear in this Scott Free/Brandywine production. Video game ALIEN Isolation would also appear to have significant influence on the movie’s content. Unconfirmed leaked plot details are still withheld from public eye in this trailer

Movie release News isn’t normally something I discuss on HIDEOUS PLASTIC as this blog’s focus is primarily concerned with merchandise inspired by these movies. In this regard though, a new movie will prove to be an absolute gold mine of potential new action figures, toys and other goodies coming our way. And that interests me greatly. As such, relevant News gets mentioned here. No doubt this new entry into the ALIEN series will generate more licenced material for the consumer market. I’m all for it.

What can we expect in regards to licenced material inspired by ALIEN Romulus? Who knows? I do hope long time companies such as NECA, Super7 and a dozen other organisations will once again hop onto the band wagon to gleefully serve up a slew of grisly looking space monsters to warm our hearts. I for one am looking forward to seeing fresh Alien types replicated in action figure format. Of very special interest to me would be at least one interpretation of the original Big Chap in the now atrophied state if it appears in this new movie. That’s got to be on the cards.

Oh, my! After forty five years, 20th Century Studios may yet entertain us with the possibility of the original Alien may be coming back? That detail is still yet to be confirmed – or denied. Nonetheless, where’s Kenner Products when you need them?
