I’m currently in the middle of a large scale toy rebuilding exercise involving disassembling and cleaning dozens of neglected Kenner ALIEN toys. This task has has taken me about 20 hours and is now complete. As part of the process, I have been adding to my collection of broken neoprene rubber anchors. Kenner used this method to hold both arms in place and give them flexibility at the shoulder joints. I don’t throw anything out, so these artifacts from multiple tear downs of the toy now only serve as testimony to how easily these arms can break off, leaving these anchors sitting inside the torso. These items are broken and now of extremely limited use.

eBay – Dirty, Broken ALIEN for Sale.
It’s beaten up, broken, coated in dust and showing its age but it’s going to sell. Even in this condition, these old toys can pull good money. This one for sale on eBay started at auction a couple of days ago with a starting price on the clock of US$60. Since then, it’s ticking down with keen purchasers expressing an interest with 13 bids already pushing it to the US$100 mark. There’s still five days remaining and you can bet these bids haven’t stopped yet. Those last few seconds will be very interesting. Not bad for a derelict, four decades old toy that isn’t really all that rare. It’s the old toy’s reputation working those dollars on the clock.
It’s broken at the neck with severed arms and missing the dorsal crest from its back. Dirty, scuffed and definitely showing its age. It’s still a great piece and all of its problems can be resolved with a little effort. These toys are easy peasy to dismantle, address all of the problems present in this sample and reassemble it. The head can be fitted back to the neck nub with a few screws and a custom made plate (or just glue it). The arms can be fitted back in place with some bungee cord and a pair of short lengths of sturdy wire (I like to use material extracted from wire coat hangers). As for that missing piece on its back? Yeah. That too. If you can find one on eBay, if you’re lucky and fit that back in place, too. Placed in the right hands, given a good clean and a timely makeover, this rough looking item could still easily become a prize possession in someone’s collection.

Average Kenner ALIEN Toy for Sale.
Looks like Kenner ALIEN toys are ramping up in value once again. Or appear to be, anyway. Well, that’s what some sellers would like to have you believe. Here’s an average condition sample of the toy for sale on eBay right now with an unjustifiably high price tag of US $575.75. It is incomplete, a little scuffed and assuredly overpriced with no “Best Offer” option present. You just have to wonder what some people expect from these old toys.Sure, it’s now a vintage item with a reputation (rather than scarcity) being the driving force behind the value of these notorious old play things originally marketed to five year olds. That doesn’t justify a price tag of this magnitude. This item is incomplete missing the head carapace and tongue parts. These three critical absent pieces severely reduce the value of the figure. For US$200 less, you can purchase a 100% complete with all of those parts present. At the price of US$500, you may even be lucky enough to score one in a box. Although I must add, the box itself will not be pristine condition and likely to be rough around the edges to say the least. At he end of the day, the seller for this toy will most likely need to revise their expectations (and price) before this item sells. Unless you really want to spend over five hundred US dollars on a forty year old toy missing valuable parts, I’d say look elsewhere. These things aren’t all that rare and if you are looking for one on eBay, about a dozen options are available right now.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN Missing Parts.
Sometimes there’s a threshold of expectations that gets crossed which is so out of touch with reality you have to wonder what the thinking behind the action actually is. Take this grossly incomplete 1979 Kenner ALIEN being auctioned on eBay right now. It’s missing the dome, both tongue parts, dorsal crest and the left arm. No less than five pieces are missing from this sample and the seller still commences the auction at US$199.99. These are common pieces missing from these toys today and while the dome, crest and both tongue halves are considered the most valuable parts of this vintage toy, I feel it’s when the limbs go missing it becomes degraded at its most. After all, missing tongue parts don’t affect the appearance of the toy as they are concealed within the elongated head. The dome goes missing so easily but is compensated by having the glow in the dark detail of the head constantly exposed. Losing the crest on the back is annoying but at least it’s on the rear of the figure and its absence is not apparent when viewed from the front. Continue reading
HIDEOUS PLASTIC – Post ALIEN Day Sale.
ALIEN Day, April 26, came and went pretty quietly. I spent the day celebrating with friends and that was the big occasion highlight for me. Which is a good thing because this year’s ALIEN Day was otherwise one of the quietest to date. Big announcements we’ve seen in the past were lacking and it was mostly the fan community bolstering the celebration. I guess that’s the way it should be. Anyway, let’s have a post ALIEN Day book sale.
Right now, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream has been discounted to the generous price of Au$30. That’s less than half price of original retail for a 300 page book dedicated to the “life and times” of the notorious eighteen inch tall ALIEN toy, released by Kenner in 1979.
Packed with information and full colour images, there has never, NEVER been a publication like it. When it comes to comics, novels big picture books for big kids and other forms of ALIEN literature, you will find them in abundance; but this is the only tome that even comes close to addressing a tiny corner of ALIEN merchandise. Unique and running low on stock. Posted from Australia to readers around the world. Purchased directly from the author (me) via eBay.
This sale will be active for the entire month of May. Don’t forget to read the feedback ratings.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN Box for Sale.
Sure, it’s a little battered and worn, missing the front window pane but if you want just the box for your Kenner ALIEN toy, this one is now listed on Ebay. Bidding started at just US$1.00, which is really a fair price. After all, it is an empty box. No could possibly want to spend too much on a beat up old box, right?
Bidding now sits at a comfortable $127.50 with three days to go. Bidding started at just US$1.00 for this mutilated package item. There are significant tears and other deformations throughout the box but it does include the red insert card. No figure or poster is included. It’s just the empty box being offered for sale. Nonetheless, these four decades old vintage boxes are in high demand. How much will this item eventually sell for? It could easily sell for well in excess of US$200. It will be interesting to watch and see how much this item escalates during bidding and is notable to gauge for determining what the value of one of these boxes actually is. Even if it is empty and in the decrepit and substantially less than desirable condition this sample certainly is.

eBay – Average Kenner ALIEN for Sale.
If you’re looking for a Kenner ALIEN toy right now and not too interested in a couple features missing but still want it to be reasonably presentable, this sample being auctioned on eBay right now might just fit the bill. Bidding started today at the fair base value of just US$1.00. Figures in this condition are relatively common and are listed frequently on eBay.It’s an average condition toy. No box. No dome. Missing its dorsal crest. Other than that, it looks very good. Nonetheless, the starting price of US$200 will attract solid attention from bidders. This sale of an average condition figure will serve as a measuring guide of what one of these vintage toys is worth now. How much will it eventually sell for? It could certainly sell for in excess of US$250. This is well within reason as dictated by those who are prepared to spend money on an average quality, ugly, forty year old toy that no one particularly thought was a good idea back in 1979 – but therein lies the value behind these old toys.

eBay – ALIEN Mounted on Card for Sale.
There’s an oft used saying that we all know, “The devil is in the details”. It’s a great saying and applying it to collectibles is very appropriate. Take this Kenner ALIEN toy mounted on the red insert card currently being offered for sale on an eBay auction. Looks like a great item. You’ll need to be more attentive here. I can tell you why. The hierarchy of desirability with these old toys is simple. Samples in unopened pristine condition are rare and highly valuable; while opened samples with the toy still attached to the red insert card are pretty close to being next. This sample is being sole by the vendor and touted with this claim. It’s for sale with the understanding, ” it was never removed from the carboard (sic)” as noted by the seller. The problem here is simple. This item actually has been removed from the card. Continue reading
eBay – “Feature Complete” ALIEN for Sale.
This forty year old vintage Kenner ALIEN toy is for sale and is “feature complete”. It’s all there. The characteristic dome and dorsal crest often missing from these old toys are both present. Keep in mind, however, this item has been populated with reproduction parts in order to bring it up to a display worthy status. Neither the dome or the crest are original parts. It is currently on offer by the seller for US$324.99.It’s been said many times before and the use of reproduction parts are very much divided in collector’s opinions and arguments from both sides are valid. On one hand, for many people, there is no other option than to use reproduction items. About 90% of all Kenner ALIEN toys today lack the dome; and around 70% are missing the crest. It makes sense to owners of the toy who want it to appear “feature complete” to use such parts when genuine parts are so rare. They are in high demand and priced much, much higher when you do find them. There’s a small industry surrounding the creation of facsimile items. Continue reading
eBay – Kenner ALIEN Parts for Sale.
Several loose body parts from a tear down of an original 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy are now available on eBay. These are being sold in three separate lots. (1) A right arm. (2) A lot featuring a variety of various body parts and (3) A pair of torso halves. It will be handy to purchase these loose items if you’re after them to complete a figure of your own; but very few parts on offer are actually in desirable condition. All three lots are being auctioned. The right arm being offered appears to be in good shape. The neoprene anchor is still attached and unbroken. No fingers are missing and the elbow spur is present. That’s a great start and this piece will definitely be purchased by someone who is missing this part. Kenner ALIEN toys missing either arm are commonplace and this piece will no doubt have great appeal to a new owner who will give it a new home, right where it belongs. Continue reading
eBay – Kenner ALIEN Poster for Sale.
I’ve seen a few of these vintage Kenner ALIEN toy posters being listed on eBay recently. Here’s another one. This one is being auctioned by the seller. Bidding started at US$20. Currently, one bidder has already expressed a desire to own this forty year old B&W printed inclusion for a toy that nobody wanted at the time. It’s a little dog eared and slightly creased but this poster is still in very good condition considering its age. Nonetheless, such a low starting price is important. Bidders will escalate the selling price well above it’s current value. This is inevitable. During the past month or so, there’s been around four of these listed on eBay. Each one has been listed for around US$200 and then sold for around that much. How much will this item sell is anyone’s guess; but right now, it’s a safe bet it will easily top the triple figure mark. Importantly, this item will demonstrate the true value of these forty year old posters as bidders determine what it’s worth – not the seller under these auction conditions. This will be a fun item to watch.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN Poster for Sale.
This is it! This is the one you want! Buy it now! This vintage B&W poster was originally packaged with the nefarious Kenner ALIEN toy back in 1979. It can be yours now for the measly sum of only US$275. CHEAP! lol. Certainly US$275 is mighty steep but the seller may accept a Best Offer. Make sure it’s in triple figures, though. This won’t sell for less than that. This is the real deal, alright. Mind you, these do crop up from time to time and there’s been a few of them appearing on eBay lately. One appeared recently and was sold while I was in the process of was writing up a News item about it. That was pretty funny, actually. Continue reading
Investigating Kenner’s Arachnid Alien.
Over at the Kenner ALIENS Toy Blog, you can now find a lengthy and detailed investigation into the released (and unreleased) color variants of Kenner’s Arachnid Alien toy, released in 1994. Eric Fischer has had a 25 year long interest in this “wacky Arachnid Alien” toy, ever since it was first released. The article is well worth the read and if you are interested in this toy line, you’ll find it informative and rewarding.
As an additional component to further explore this curious multilegged oddity, we have a page dedicated to exploring some of the early product development prototype samples that lead to this toy’s release.
It’s been two and a half decades since this toy was released but have we seen the end of the Arachnid Alien? It’s hard to say. With both NECA and Eaglemoss releasing tribute items dedicated to other Kenner Alien toys of the 1990s, an updated version of this strange may yet see release. I gotta say, a fully articulated NECA Arachnid Alien is highly appealing.

eBay – Box and Poster for Sale.
There’s a pair of very interesting listings individually available on eBay right now. Both are 1979 vintage Kenner ALIEN items. For your consideration is an original box and a loose poster inclusion. No toy is present in either sale and these items are being sold separately for US$250 each. The B&W poster and instruction sheet was included with the Kenner ALIEN toy when it was originally sold back in the late 70s and early 80s. This sample shows some wrinkles, creases and print wear. It’s still a great item in its own right but at US$250 is definitely a tall order. At least it’s complete, if not perfect.
The same cannot be said for the original box packaging available as a separate listing. Torn, beaten up and showing obvious crush damage, this item is also deficient in other ways. Gone are both window panes that should be present in both the top and front of the box; along with an absence of the red insert card the ALIEN toy would normally have been fastened to when it was new. Three feature components missing from this four decades old package makes it look like it’s survived being struck by a bus and severely reduces the value of this item.
While Kenner ALIEN boxes and posters are highly sought after by collectors, these are both clearly listed at the high end of the pricing scale – especially as neither can make claims regarding being in excellent condition. The poster is good, sure; but that box! Wow! US$25! Nonetheless, empty ALIEN boxes do sell for hundreds of dollars and the seller has included an option for Best Offer. It will sell. It may not sell for the listed price but give it time and someone will purchase it. Incomplete. Battered. Torn. It won’t matter.

deathsticktraphouse Alien Specimen T-Shirt.
deathsticktraphouse have a neat looking Kenner ALIEN inspired T-shirt (and other goodies such as mugs and stickers) available at teepublic. The garment features a modified version of the B&W ALIEN poster which was originally included in the box with the toy when it was first sold over forty years ago. Shirts are available in 15 colours, fit male or female, feature a variety of styles and cover a full range of sizes. I’ve previously seen similar items to this and much like those other merchandise, it appears to be 100% unlicenced. Nothing wrong with that just so long as you don’t mind buying unofficial stuff.

Kenner “Exploding” Alien Explored.
There’s an article published on the The Kenner Aliens Toy Blog that investigates the ancestry of the classic 1990s Scorpion Alien’s practical and dynamic “exploding” action feature of the toy.Widely regarded as the most screen accurate version of the Xenomorph warrior appearing in Kenner’s 1990s range of ALIENS toys, the Scorpion Alien was also one of the most popular. Here’s a snippet from the blog article, all good reading: “It’s a fine example of balance between form & function, aesthetic & practicality. One of the best & most popular figures from the line, this figure perfectly captures the look of the creatures as seen in Aliens.” It’s a fun read and a fascinating insight into how Kenner would repurpose an already extant action feature design, hone it to perfection and produce one of the true classic ALIENS toys ever made.
Thank you Eric Fischer for writing this article.

Vintage Spooky Alien Goodies.
Vintage Spooky have a range of fun unlicenced items inspired by the 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy. The art style and details featured in these goodies clearly indicate the toy was the inspiration for these designs. So many features are replicated in them; just look at that wonderful tail! You can find each of these fun items available on the Vintage Spooky Etsy store:
3 foot tall jointed die cut decoration.

I might have to get one or two of these things.

NECA Panther and Night Cougar ALIENS.
NECA have released a pair of images of their new Panther and Night Cougar ALIENS figures on Facebook. Each of these tribute items are inspired by Kenner ALIENS toys of the 1990s; and much like the original releases from quarter of a century ago, each of these new figures features a similar “Magnetic Kamikaze Parasite!” as an inclusion. I love the lurid purple and green color scheme of these items. They replicate and honor the original Kenner releases perfectly. Here’s what NECA have to say about these new big cat themed figures, “Here’s the packaging for our Kenner Tribute Night Cougar Alien and Panther Alien which are currently shipping!“ So, if you want one or have pre-ordered yours already, it’s arriving very soon.

eBay – 1979 Kenner ALIEN for Sale. Only $400.
It no longer surprises me when a forty year old toy nobody wanted back in 1979 gets listed on eBay for US$400 and the first bid is tossed into the hat before the listing is so much as an hour old. check out this fine Kenner item now because this time next week this listing is history. He’s all there, too. Dome, shoulder crest and all mouth parts are present. A great and worthy addition to someone’s collection. No box or poster is included in the listing, though; and such inclusions usually set the starting bid at this price, around US$400. Nonetheless, this looks like a solid sample of the toy. Minor scuffs on the glow in the dark paintwork, some dusty surfaces here and there along with minor handling wear are all that detract from it’s otherwise excellent presentation. Prices have certainly been escalating on these old toys but it’s not unheard of for these vintage collectibles to sell for an excess of US$450 in similar condition, without a box. So if you can afford it, grab it! These things certainly aren’t reducing in value.
