Kenner ALIEN Head and Tail for Sale.

If you’re looking for some replacement pieces for your 1979 vintage Kenner ALIEN toy, there’s a head and tail being auctioned on eBay right now. As such things are becoming increasingly uncommon, you might like to consider this. Bidding starts at US$100 for both pieces. It’s important to note this sale is accompanied by a “Good News and some Bad News” caveat. Firstly, the “good news”. The tail is in excellent condition with very little to no issues. Importantly, the blunt spiked tip of these pieces can be broken. This one is fully intact and that’s great. What’s just as important is the presence of the serrated metal washer attached to the other end of the tail. As this item is needed to fit the tail onto a figure, it’s inclusion here is very welcome – and uncommon – so it’s more than a bonus. Loose tails like this one for sale usually lack this metal ring. Having it included in the sale means the tail is easily attached to the figure without the need for any improvisation. I say that’s definitely “good news”. Continue reading

Prototype Gallery Update: Lt. Ripley.

It’s been some time since I’ve added any content to the section on this blog dedicated to ALIENS prototypes. What finer way to break the drought than add a first shot version of Kenner’s 1992 ALIENS action figure, Space Marine Lt. Ripley? This fascinating late production hand painted sample sans COO and copyright is now added to this page. I’d like to thank Caesar V. Jacquez for kind permission to publish these photos. I’m always looking to post more prototype items to document on HIDEOUS PLASTIC. If you would like to share such items and have images added to this significant repository of Kenner ALIEN(S) action figure prototypes online, please contact me.

“Hasbro” ALIEN Toy For Sale.

Wanting to get your hands on a reasonably priced Kenner ALIEN toy in average condition? For sale on eBay right now is a perfect example of what you can expect one of these toys to be in. A few commonly missing pieces sets the starting bid at a relatively low US$150. Just completely disregard the seller’s claim this was made by Hasbro. It’s true Hasbro did own Kenner Products at some point but that ownership transfer from Tonka didn’t occur till late in Kenner’s life, in 1992. It happened long, long after these toys were produced in 1979. Sadly, Hasbro was the final owner of Kenner and the world renowned toy maker would eventually be closed by Hasbro in 2000. Boo. Hiss. Hasbro. You shut down an institution that gave joy to several generations of children.

Anyway, this sample of ye olde Kenner ALIEN toy is in good average condition. It’s lacking the commonly missing parts. That is, it’s missing the head dome, shoulder crest and the upper half of its tongue. Despite these pieces lacking in the toy, the rest of it is all there. Not only are the arms present, but they are attached, which is always great. The head paint is in nice shape, the legs and tail aint broke. Sure.  It’s a little dusty and scratched here and there but in such played with condition, there’s no doubting it’s going to be a welcome addition to any prospective new owner’s collection. If you don’t wanna bother with the hassle of bidding for this articulated grey styrene cast bundle of joy, there’s a buy now option of US$220. Cheap. lol.

But seriously, this item won’t last long and once bidding commences, the final value on this vintage toy may yet exceed the “buy now” price currently being offered.

Happy 5th Anniversary, HIDEOUS PLASTIC.

It’s been five years since this blog was launched, which comfortably places half a decade behind us and we’re still continuing to grow. Let’s first acknowledge that much like last year, 2021 has been tough for almost everyone. Covid-19 is still a major part of everyone’s day to day lives and we’ve all had to make adjustments to our lifestyles in some way. Sometimes temporarily, sometimes more permanent. Nonetheless, HIDEOUS PLASTIC is surviving and doing well.

Let’s celebrate with a Au$20 discount sale on the book. Awesome!

This is a celebratory post with some content I wish to discuss and I’ll cover it in detail below. A lot has happened over the past twelve months and much remains to be seen during the coming year and beyond. So, let’s get stuck into dismantling this list.

1). HIDEOUS PLASTIC Site and Content.
As we enter our sixth year online, almost 900 News posts have been made and 200 pages of ALIEN toy and action figure content now exists here at your fingertips at hideousplastic.com. The site has become content rich and I’ve been working at it for five years. So it should reflect that effort. And now it does.

In regards to News items, excepting a few scattered announcements from official licensers during the passed year, there has been a drought regarding new ALIEN toys and action figures being released. In this regard, I’ve continued to prop up the News section during these lean times by posting select Kenner ALIEN toys for sale on eBay. Importantly, however, this drought will break. There is a new ALIEN television series being released at some point in the not too distant future and it’s a safe bet it will support a stream of new merchandise associated with it. Which is great, as far as I am concerned. It will be a while before the TV show is properly revealed but you can rest assured, HIDEOUS PLASTIC will be around to post news about any action figure goodies associated with it. I am positive about this new show and looking forward to seeing what it has to offer.

2). HIDEOUS PLASTIC Book: Vol.1.
Taking the current global health crisis into consideration, sales of the book, are doing well. It’s nowhere near the heady levels of a New York Times Best Seller but as an independent publication documenting the (at the time) unpopular forty year old Kenner ALIEN toy, I am not troubled by that as it was never intended to achieve those lofty goals. Currently the book is self sustaining with sales being more than adequate to ensure the bills associated with running and maintaining this site are paid, guaranteeing its survival. It’s now part of a positive self-supporting feedback loop. That’s a good thing.

Which reminds me. Today’s post is as much a celebration as it is a News item. So let’s celebrate with a sale! This week, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream is currently on sale at a discount price. Or you can contact me directly if you want one at the current low price of Au$35. Remember, as outlined above, purchase of this book will continue to keep this site alive during the coming years and assist greatly in funding other projects I currently have in development.

Yeah. That’s right. I’m always up to something. So let’s talk about those in-development projects.

3). HIDEOUS PLASTIC Book: Vol.2.
I have to be straight forward and blunt on this topic. Unfortunately, the current pandemic climate is still negatively affecting just about everything. This continuing situation is making it extremely difficult to further develop this project at this stage. In this regard, I am placing a pause on the progress of the sequel book, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – This time it’s more. This is in no way intended to indicate any cancellation of this project – it’s just being placed on hold until more favourable conditions arise so I can apply my best efforts to it. Right now is simply not the right time.

Believe me, I want to see this book happen but it’s just going to have to wait and sit on the back burner and simmer for now. For how long? I don’t know but when I decide to pick it up again and run with it, I will be more than happy to make appropriate announcements.

Mind you, that doesn’t mean I am slacking off entirely. It raises the next and final agenda item presented here today, on our fifth anniversary celebration. This is something I’ve been wanting to talk about for a while and we are getting closer to a proper reveal sometime soon which will take place next year. I am aiming for April 4, ALIEN Day to make an announcement.

4). Unannounced HIDEOUS PLASTIC Project.
While the postponement of HIDEOUS PLASTIC – This time it’s more was definitely a hard decision to make, the pause in development has provided me with the opportunity to elevate another project to the fore. This is something I have been researching for the past two years but still not yet ready to reveal details. Nonetheless, this endeavor will be easier for me to complete, less expensive than embarking on another major publication and also substantially diversify what HIDEOUS PLASTIC has to offer. At this stage, it’s a worthy trade off and one that will be delivered in a shorter time frame, too.

Significantly, advancement of this project is currently being funded by sales of HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream but entering into a full crowd funding campaign at some date in the future may be required to complete it. I am expecting that may happen in late 2022. Maybe earlier. We shall see how this new project advances. I’ve learned to keep my cards close to my chest on such things and I am not yet ready to make a full reveal just yet.

So there you have it. Notwithstanding the fact Covid-19 still firmly wraps itself in a stranglehold around the planet, HIDEOUS PLASTIC remains healthy and continues to grow. We’ll be around for a long time yet. We’re already halfway to celebrating our first decade; all during the continued unfolding events of a difficult global health issue of historical significance.

Thank you everyone for visiting and supporting this unique and 100% independent site. I don’t use paywalls or thrust out my hand for contributions or relentlessly canvass for money or insist on donations. I don’t even run a Patreon account. I keep this site advertisement free and if you want to support and see this project continue to grow, you can always purchase a copy of HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream. …or maybe tell your friends about it. That helps, too.

Peace to you all, be kind to each other and remember, Covid has taught us all something. We have become a large community on a small planet, interconnected and closer than we ever were before. We’re all neighbours now. The rest is up to you.

Incomplete Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

One of the great fun things about observing the sales of vintage 1979 Kenner ALIEN toys is how the prices are climbing dramatically. This one being auctioned on eBay right now has a starting bid of US$750. You may feel that’s a high starting price, you’d be correct.Nonetheless, as the demand for these old toys continues unabated price rises can be expected. What’s unexpected is how many of these discontinued toys were made back in 1979 and still survive to be sold on secondary markets like eBay more than forty years later. This one is missing its head dome, it is dusty and is incomplete. It doesn’t even include a box or poster. At least it has all of its mouth parts in situ and the ever elusive dorsal crest mounted between its shoulders is present. …but starting a bid at US$750?! Yeah. That’s kind of an astonishing expectation and I will be surprised if it actually sells for that impressive amount. Complete figures in boxes sell for around that price – and that’s considered cheap not loose, dusty samples missing one of the critical parts that actually makes these old toys valuable. Then again, as I like to say about these old figures, there is nothing normal about this toy. So who knows? In all actuality, it’s only worth what it gets sold for.

Kenner ALIEN and Poster for Sale.

Looking for a near complete, good condition Kenner ALIEN? One is for sale right now on eBay for the Royal sum of US$650. Of course if that’s too much to be accommodated by your financial situation, the seller is seeking a Best Offer on this item. It appears to be a decent piece, a little dusty but easily cleaned with some warm soapy water and an old toothbrush. Mind you, the head dome is missing and the glow in the dark paint work appears to display minor scuff marks. Significantly, the provided photographic material doesn’t reveal if the frequently damaged slot on the figure’s back is whole or not. Nonetheless, we have been assured by the seller this old toy still “Has big back spine accessories.” If you plan to purchase this item, make sure you inquire about how well that valuable albeit frequently absent item is in situ and whether it’s an original piece. There’s a poster included in the sale, too. You might like to ask about it’s authenticity. No box is included. It’s a solid average piece and probably won’t remain listed for long once offers are made.

Mostly ‘armless Kenner ALIEN for Sale. Mostly.

Here’s an ideal project if you are inclined to be creative and want to take part in the joy of restoring one of these vintage ALIEN toys. This item is for sale right now on eBay. Bidding starts at US$249.99 for this incomplete and broken old toy. He’s almost all there and only missing the dome that sits loose upon the head. He’s still in some need of repair as both arms are broken from the figure and need to be re-attached. It’s not a hard task, actually. I’ve done it many times. Take the figure apart, slap a 3mm bungee cord inside the torso and voila! he’s all fixed. Done. OK, so there’s a few additional steps required but it’s an easy repair. The dorsal crest is also provided and can be re-attached. Jam a piece of foam rubber in with the pegs to hold it in place works wonders and can’t be any simpler. Right now, US$250 is a reasonable price for this item. Grab him and make him whole once again.

By the way, here’s a method I like to use to get those severed arms back where they belong. Have fun with this figure, whoever has the joy of landing it. It’s an ideal candidate for repair and subsequent display.

Complete Kenner ALIEN Toy for Sale.

Here’s another one of those lurid Kenner ALIEN toys that didn’t sell very well at retail outlets forty years ago. This complete specimen is for sale on eBay for US$600 (or make Best Offer). He’s a lovely sample, too. Complete with all parts present and only minor scuffs here and there along some dust that mar his otherwise “perfect composure”. The dust can be cleaned off with some some warm water, mild detergent and a toothbrush. The value is all there! That is, if you think US$600 is an appropriate price for a grotesque toy that was discounted to under US$5 in order to clear unwanted stock nobody wanted and wouldn’t sell in 1980. No box, poster or small child unable to sleep at night included. Make an offer.

Incomplete Kenner ALIEN for sale.

Here’s a nice, average condition Kenner ALIEN toy for sale. Missing the dome but otherwise complete and being auctioned on eBay right now. Bidding starts at US$300.He appears to be a little dusty and worn about the edges. Certainly, his glow in the dark head paint appears to be worn and the legs are likely to be very loose as a display stand is required to hold the figure upright. His arms have been re-stringed but his mouth parts are fully functional and all of his appendages are present on his back. This is a reasonable and average condition vintage toy but this is a high starting price for a figure that is incomplete and clearly a long way from optimum condition. This is a price you would expect to see on Kenner ALIEN toys in a substantially better condition. Nonetheless, prices on these old toys have been climbing dramatically of late and US$300 may yet become the new benchmark for incomplete and used Kenner ALIEN toys. Will this fellow sell at US$300? It only takes one bid to flag it as Sold.

Kenner ALIEN “Still” in Box for Sale.

Here’s something you have to be super careful about if you are considering purchasing one of these vintage ALIEN toys in a box. They can appear on eBay mounted inside the box and fastened to the red insert support card. Frequently, such samples of the toy are also opened. Like this one currently for sale on eBay for US1999.99. We need to take a closer look at this item. One of the attractions here is the claim this figure is fastened to the insert card and being held in situ by zip ties. This can mean the figure has never been removed from its box and as such can considerably ramp up the value of the toy. What about figures that have been removed from their box and then fastened back in place with replacement zip ties, is the toy still valuable? Sure. But it also means the figure has been removed from the box and as such it is considerably reduced in value.

That’s the issue on display here. This figure is being held in place with replacement ratchet style zip ties rather than the original laddered variety that Kenner used to package the figure and is proof this sample has been removed from its box. The third image shows you what a figure that has never been removed from the box with the zip ties holding it in place look like. What’s this vintage ALIEN worth, then? Certainly not US2,000, that’s for sure. It’s still a good pick up at half that price but at two Grand, you can expect to purchase an undisturbed figure in original box that has never been opened at all; and we also know this figure has been outside of its box due the dust that has collected on it. Beware of sales like this one.

HIDEOUS PLASTIC on fanbyte.

I had the recent joy of talking with merritt k of fanbyte about my book, HIDEOUS PLASTIC – In stores everyone can hear you scream. We had a lengthy email exchange including some questions he wanted answered. I was obliging and the resulting article can be read here, How Game Dev Blues Led to a 300 Page Book on an ‘Alien’ Toy From 1979.These Q&A sessions are a lot of fun! I’m going to have to do more of them, I think.

Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

Here’s a great example of the 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy being sold on eBay. How much can you expect to pay for this wonderful and greatly sought after item? How does US$975? er… wut? Is there a box? No. Does it come with a poster. No. Well, then… Is it cast in gold or was it found among other treasures of a recently discovered Pharaoh’s tomb? er… no. It’s just a loose forty year old ALIEN toy. So, why the high price on this listing? This is one of those examples where the very canny seller on eBay has realised people might pay any amount of money to own one of these toys. So, he’s listed it for a ridiculous price and added Make Best Offer option to the sale. The “best offer” option is significant because he’ll keep the item listed until he receives the amount he feels will be the highest he will get. Patience is the game here. It’s a selling technique that functions a little like an auction, but without the timer. Surely, this item will eventually sell and the person making the highest offer will score this prize. How much will it actually sell for? Only the parties involved in the transaction will ever really know as the sale will only reflect a “best offer accepted” acknowledgement along with the original listed price.

Condition is very good. A few minor issues and blemishes mar its presentation, like the chipped chrome on the teeth. Otherwise, it’s complete with original parts even if it is showing its age a little. A nice piece but remember: it’s only worth what it gets sold for.

-Windebieste.

Average Condition ALIEN for Sale.

Here’s a 1979 Kenner ALIEN for sale on eBay, missing common parts. Gone are the head dome, the dorsal crest and his upper tongue half. These parts are frequently missing from samples of the toy when they’re found in the wild. What remains here though, is a solid figure with all other features in place. He’s a little worn around the edges and his glow in the dark paint shows some scuff marks but his average condition still makes this sample a good, welcome find for someone. Figures in this condition are relatively common and frequently appear on eBay. They can sell for any price, typically starting around the US$100 mark. Despite this being the case, the US$325 price tag on this item is somewhat high and is usually expected on complete figures. On the other hand, prices on these forty year old toys have been climbing. It’s nothing new.

What is astounding is the frequency these erroneously perceived “rare” old toys appear on eBay. Is someone just selling the same old toy, over and over again? Sometimes it may feel like it, but nay. Kenner made a lot of these things. Estimates put the production number at around 150,000 units. Possibly more. Such a high number pushed out to the world has ensured there’s always a constant supply of Kenner ALIEN toys being unearthed. It’s been four decades since these vintage toys were released in October 1979 and yet, an endless stream of them is always appearing. This is just one more.

-Windebieste.

Damaged Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

Here’s a Kenner ALIEN toy that’s seen better days for sale on eBay right now for the respectable price of US$299.99. He’s “feature complete” meaning all of his parts are present but that claim doesn’t guarantee the toy’s condition is desirable. Far from it, actually.Let’s take a closer look at what’s on offer with this listing. While all of the figure’s parts are there, not all of them are original. The dome in particular is a notable reproduction. While it does provide the vintage figure with some claim to completing it, the presence of the part is no match for an original piece the toy would have possessed when first purchased, either in value or presentation. While the dome is a facsimile, it’s easily replaced and discarded should a genuine piece be acquired. I would also extend suspicion to the two halves of the tongue as these may also be replacement parts inside the mouth.

Nonetheless, the figure has greater concerns than facsimile parts that are easily replaced with hard to find genuine items. The glow in the dark paint on the head is damaged and other problems exist on the figure. The left shoulder and arm both display prominent heat damage and are obviously a major undesirable distraction from the rest of the figure in terms of presentation.

For US$299.99 it’s certainly not looking like a bargain, that’s for sure. Critical features are either missing (and replaced with bootleg parts) or severely damaged. Be patient and look around for a better sample at this price as this item is probably best used for being stripped down and remaining good parts used on a rebuild elsewhere – but not at this price.

Kenner ALIEN Auction on eBay.

Here’s a fine example of a 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy for sale on eBay right now. This lovely face ripping toy is being auctioned with bidding starting at US$450. A steep kick off from the starting block to be sure, but these things do sell for just about any price now. Significantly though, US$450 is the price point you can usually expect a box to be included in the sale. Nope. Sorry. No such luxury packaging is present here and the listing is solely for the toy. Mind you, it’s a very good quality item. It could do with a clean. That’s about it. That’s really the only area of improvement needed on this action figure and it is easily achieved with some warm soapy water, a toothbrush and some patience. It’s all that fine detail these toys are blessed with that trap dust motes and these vintage toys aren’t affected by mild kitchen detergent soap and a good rinse down with clean water. A good bath, and this sample will be the pride of someone’s collection.

-Windebieste.

1979 Kenner Dome for Sale.

Here’s one of those very, very special pieces that will complete your vintage ALIEN toy, it’s a “dome” or “carapace” that will sit loosely upon the head and fall off if knocked. For a sum of US$300 on eBay this loose piece of vintage concave plastic can be yours! Of course, the seller is inviting offers on this item so it should sell well below that. Maybe it will sell for only US$100. CHEAP!It’s been a while since I’ve seen one of these valuable pieces hit eBay. This one looks good and tidy. Nonetheless, high demand for these items will ensure this one won’t sit for long on the service. It’s not unusual for these items to sell for around US$100. What is unusual is how many of these loose pieces are still around after more than forty years since the toy was released. I’m thinking that’s possibly due to the more than 100,000 samples of the toy being made in the US and these parts are poorly implemented in terms of being attached to the figure means they simple fall off. What’s more, the number of these toys made by Kenner may possibly exceed 150,000 when factoring units made in Canada. Which by the way, were made in smaller numbers than in the US with the domes made from different material, fall off just as easily and are simply more rare.

-Windebieste.

1979 Kenner ALIEN Brochure for Sale.

Over forty years have now passed since Kenner released their now famous oversized ALIEN action figure. Along with its release, various promotional material such as brochures and catalogs featuring the toy were also released. One such item has recently become  available for sale on eBay for the lofty sum of US$300, or Best Offer.

This double sided four colour brochure is rare in the truest sense of the word. Some people will claim the toy in a box deserves this honor, when in all actuality, it’s items like this that deserve that honour.  The number of figures in boxes – including unopened packages –  available on eBay at any time is surprisingly high compared to promotional material such as this. Relatively speaking then, this brochure genuinely wears the reputation of being identified as rare. For example, just the other day, I posted how easily it was to find a sample of the toy in a box. I instantly found seven of them. In contrast, this brochure listing is the first occurrence I have seen in a very, very long time.

US$300 is a lot to pay for a forty year old double sided catalog item. Then again, this vintage sheet is more than just a relic. It’s a historical document providing a fleeting glimpse through a distant window into the marketing strategy behind one of the most remarkable toys ever made. One other additional curious element of note for this print item is also worthy of mention. Not only are images of the toy featured on both sides (an image of the figure also appears on the cover of the ALIEN board game featured on the reverse side) but images differ slightly from the figure released in 1979. The item featured here is believed to be a prototype of the Kenner ALIEN, adding yet another glimpse into this toy’s distant past, into the development of this strange children’s toy.

Brochures like this are extremely difficult to find and are seldom listed on eBay. This one will no doubt sell very soon as demand for the toy and any vintage material associated with it be it posters, toy catalogs or other Kenner promotional material continues to grow in demand.

Complete Kenner ALIEN for sale.

Here’s a decent Kenner ALIEN for sale on eBay you might like to consider. This one is complete with all parts present on his head and all other important features intact. He’s not in perfect condition and but only suffers from a little visible wear around the edges. It is otherwise in very good condition. Significantly, bidding on this item starts at a low US$0.99. CHEAP and a BARGAIN! (…but not for very long.)This is clearly a good condition figure for its age. Certainly, it’s not mint condition but nonetheless completeness of all critical parts is one of two of its great strengths. Its other strength – and this is important – is the seller has commenced bidding at the low, low price of one dollar. This is important because once this sale is completed, multiple prospective purchasers will have thrown in their bids. To what height will bidding on this item escalate to? It’s hard to say. Complete figures in similar condition easily sell for over US$250. A final value of US$350 isn’t out of the question. Reaching an even higher price is well within its ability to do so.

The important take home detail here is the value of this forty plus year old vintage toy will be set by the highest bidder. This will make this sale a litmus test of a sort for these old toys to determine what you can expect to sell or buy one. In short, if you really want to know the true value of one of these toys, watching this sale in particular to its conclusion will be a solid way to evaluate what it is actually worth.

Multiple Boxed 1979 Kenner ALIEN Toys for Sale.

Looking for a Kenner ALIEN action figure in a box? You’re in luck! Right now, no less than seven of these highly sought after vintage toys are available on eBay right now. Ranging in quality from severely beat up boxes to reasonably presentable, including one toy still attached to it’s red card insert. Any one of these desirable items is commanding a price tag of over US$1,000. While none of these items can be considered to be in pristine condition, it’s unusual to note that boxed Kenner ALIEN toys currently for sale on eBay outnumber loose samples without any packaging. Not bad for an action figure that’s more than forty years old. All of these samples are US pressings of the toy and most are being sold in the US with Japan also being represented. Recently, one listed in Argentina was also available (but this selection was a quick search result and for all I know it may still be available). So, at least seven are available as of this writing. This will change rapidly as these eventually sell. Continue reading
