eBay – 1979 Kenner ALIEN Poster for Sale.

What’s 40 years, a single page smaller than A3 size printed on both sides in black & white and worth almost US$300?

Yup.  That’s right.  It’s another loose poster inclusion from the 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy.  Right now, this item is for sale for US$299 on eBay.  hmmm… Let me see…  If I was to purchase this item, it would cost me Au$425.  Nope.  It’s just not going to happen.  The vendor is in the US and postage rate will just kill it for me.  lol.

Anyway, the vendor is open to offers on this one and it will probably sell for around US$100.  Maybe a little more.  That’s the going price for these vintage items and it’s still less than half the listed price.  Bargain!

Prototype Gallery Update: 1993 Arachnid Alien.

In continuing our current interest in rare and unique items from the bygone era of Kenner’s ALIENS toys, we are pleased to add some more samples of the 1993 Arachnid Alien to the page dedicated to this odd action figure. Most notably is the item on the left:

This particular grey painted kit bashed concept version of the toy is largely assembled from parts cannibalised from Kenner’s earlier Gorilla Alien, notably the head and legs.  Images of this unique curiosity grace HIDEOUS PLASTIC with the kind permission of Derek Ho.

Prototype Gallery Update: (Giant) Queen Facehugger.

Another fantastic set of images of a unique prototype piece is posted today on HIDEOUS PLASTIC.  Kenner’s 1993 (Giant) Queen Facehugger action figure now has its own page with description and photos.  While many prototypes are cast in a hodge podge of miscellaneous colours that just happen to be handy at the time, this exquisite clear resin hard copy adopts the alluring presence of a crystal scorpion.  Beautiful yet deadly.

Photographs of this extraordinary and beautiful piece are courtesy of Marc Cawiezel.  Thank you Marc for sharing this incredible item with us all.

Prototype Gallery Update: Gorilla Alien and Hatchling Accessory.

Today’s update involves 2 already established pages dedicated to ALIEN prototype figures – Kenner’s Gorilla Alien action figure and Kenner’s Queen Alien action figure accessory, the Deadly Chest Hatchling.  As both these pages are already extant, these additions help to expand those areas with fresh images of each item. Both pages have also been re-organised to better accommodate this extra content.  Check ’em out.  Gorilla Alien and  the Queen Alien Deadly Chest Hatchling accessory.

Adding fresh content to the prototype section of HIDEOUS PLASTIC is definitely a great privilege I get to enjoy.  It’s with great pleasure and gratitude I get to thank both Derek Ho and Eric Fischer for their permission to use their images in these updates.  Thank you for your kind support, Guys!

Prototype Gallery Update: Mini Dropship and Stuff.

Today I am posting what I am hoping to be the first of some major updates on the ALIEN Prototype section of this website.  The welcome additions include images of Kenner’s unproduced Mini Dropship, some extra images to their 1997 ALIEN Resurrection Newborn figure; along with some new content added to the page dedicated to ALIEN Resurrection facehugger accesssories.  All fantastic stuff as you can see in this preview image right here:

While a ton of good stuff has been added today, I am hoping to post more soon.  Nonetheless, for this round of updates I would like to thank the people whose image contributions come from Derek Ho and Eric Christian Magee and have been added to respective pages.

Thank you, Guys!  I am always appreciative of the generosity of community members for providing permission to use their content on HIDEOUS PLASTIC.

Prototype Gallery Update: Space Marines Ripley & Drake.

It’s time to start filling in some gaps in representing significant missing characters in our ever increasing galleries dedicated to Kenner ALIEN action figure and toy prototypes.  It doesn’t get any more significant than adding test shots and other samples of Lt. Ripley.  Here she is, prototypes of 1992 Kenner ALIENS Space Marine Lt. Ripley.

Also being added today are additional images of Space Marine Drake to his already established section dedicated to prototypes and test shots of this character.

Fantastic stuff and many thanks to Derek Ho for his kind permission to use these images.

eBay – 1979 Kenner ALIEN Carcass for Sale.

For sale on eBay right now is an incomplete 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy.  To say this figure is incomplete is a gross understatement.   It’s missing critical parts.  It’s damaged just about everywhere else.  It’s dirty and covered in dust.  Bidding starts at US$20.

There’s been many incomplete Kenner ALIEN figures and loose parts available on the service of late.  This one is severely lacking in so many ways but is it really worth US$20?  We can do a quick evaluation of the figure – or rather – what remains of the parts that are not absent.  That’ll speed things up a bit.

eBay – 18 Inch ALIEN(S) Action Figures for Sale. (Part 2)

Following on from yesterday’s post regarding a pair of 18 inch ALIEN action figures for sale, here’s another listing of similar items on eBay.  There are some significant differences to be noted in this pair of Kenner and Super7. Yes. They are more or less different samples of the same items in my previous post but the differences in the asking price is around US$900.  Why is that?  Are they worth the asking price?  Let’s check it out.

This pair of figures includes boxes for both and in the case of the Super7 ALIENS figure, it looks like it’s not been opened.  That’s very welcome but as the figure can be purchased new for US$175 directly from the manufacturer, its value is somewhat limited.  The 40 year old Kenner item has its fair share of degradation and that’s understandable albeit unfortunate. These boxes were intended to be ephemeral and not last for 4 decades.  So wear & tear, creases sticky tape repairs, other deformations and other common problems present on this box are the norm.  Is it worth US$1000, though?  Not really. eBay – 18 Inch ALIEN(S) Action Figures for Sale.

These ALIEN(S) action figures are for sale right now as a pair for US$400 on Ebay.  They’re both different items separated by more than 3 decades.  One is an original 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure missing it’s dome (Right); and the other item is a Super7 tribute figure, the Classic Toy Edition, released in 2017 (Left).  Let’s see if these items are worth the asking price the vendor has listed them for. Let’s start with the Kenner item first.  It’s the older figure of the two, worth more and really is the inspiration for the other, more recently released Super7 SuperSize figure, anyway.  Continue reading

eBay – 1979 Kenner ALIEN Poster for Sale.

UPDATE: Sold for US$113.25.

Oh, look!  It’s an original 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure poster for sale.  Wait… didn’t this sell recently?  Sure it did; but that was a different sample, this newly listed item is being sold by another vendor.  It’s a poster, printed on both sides in B&W.

This 40 year old poster inclusion for an old toy isn’t in as good condition as the previous similar item that sold recently. It appears the corners may have minor creasing and other imperfections.  Nonetheless, the vendor wants US$100 for it.  You may think this is a copycat sale with the vendor hoping to duplicate the success of the previous seller.

Nope. Maybe, well maybe to a degree; but it’s not necessarily the case.  Loose and without a box or the figure, it’s the standard rate for these things.  Around US$100 is about right.  I’ll be watching this sale with interest.  I always do.  It will be interesting to see how many people bid on it and how much it sells for.

Prototype Gallery Update: Deadly Chest Hatchling.

Today we are pleased to add yet another fine example to our expanding section dedicated to Kenner prototype and production samples.  This time it’s the curious accessory piece which was included with the 1992 Queen Alien action figure, the Deadly Chest Hatchling.

It may be small, at only 3 inches long, but it’s a fascinating little piece.  Fortunately, we have been able to post images of a pair of samples of this accessory.  A hardcopy piece and a first shot, both providing an an insight into the work intensive process of toy production.

eBay – 1979 Kenner ALIEN Poster for Sale.

A few weeks back an empty Kenner ALIEN box and poster was listed for sale on eBay at a starting bid of US$400.  They didn’t sell.  The empty box (without the poster) was subsequently relisted and sold for almost US$300.  The poster has now also reappeared.

Described as being in excellent condition, white with no tears you can bid on it now, starting at US$99.  A one hundred dollar price tag on a forty year old two sided sheet of paper may seem to be a little steep so let’s see how long this item takes to sell on its own.

Don’t forget!  Both sides of the poster are included in the sale.  BARGAIN!  😉

eBay – 1979 Kenner ALIEN Action Figure Parts.

Listed right now for sale on eBay is a dismantled Kenner ALIEN toy.  It’s not just disassembled, the head has been snapped away from the neck and the usual pieces – the dome and shoulder crest – are both missing.  How much is this collection of dismembered 4 decades old blended styrene pieces actually worth?

Clearly the item included in the listing is well beyond being considered complete.  You could re-assemble the figure and it will tidy up nicely.  There’s a few special tasks needed to get the arms and head back onto the figure and maybe tighten up the legs; but when cleaned up, it would still be a great display item.   Or, these same parts could be distributed among other ALIEN toys missing any of these parts. This will be a nice pick up for someone either way. Continue reading

Oz Comic Con 2019 – Treasure Island.

I spent two days at Melbourne’s Oz Comic Con. Much of my first day was spent hunting for new ALIEN stuff – of which there wasn’t very much.  Mind you, I documented what I did find on STUDIO YUTANI.  The following day I was my own free agent and sought more intimately through random boxes of loose toys to seek anything I could find.  Here are the results of my endeavours.  My archeological excavations unearthed these Three Stooges.

The green character on the left is Pyther, a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers villain. Cast in green with a wonderful spring loaded tongue action feature, he’s a great four inch item made by Bandai in 1994.  In the middle is another Bandai figure, the wonderfully sculpted Tamashii Nations MonsterArts ALIEN Big Chap. Third up is an Ultraforce NM-E Ultra Villain.

eBay: How Rare is a 1979 Kenner ALIEN Toy, Anyway..?

When talking about the old 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure, the word ‘rare’ is often bandied about.  Exactly, how rare is this 40 year old toy, anyway.  Let’s see if we can shed some light onto how ‘rare’ this figure really is.  The best place to start an investigation into this quandary is eBay.

First, this toy was produced in enormous quantities by Kenner who expected sales numbers to follow in the footsteps of their extremely popular 3.75 inch tall Star Wars toys they released the previous year.  Kenner sold an estimated forty million pocket size Star Wars action figures in 1978 – exactly how many ALIEN toys they expected to sell is difficult to determine; but is forty million of them out of the question?  Probably – but they certainly made this unconventional toy in a high volume and that’s indisputable.  Any estimate is open to speculation and keeping the high number of forty million Star Wars toys in mind is going to be an important factor regardless of how many were actually made.

eBay: Pristine Kenner ALIEN in Box for Sale.

UPDATE. This item sold on eBay auction for its initial listed price of $3,500. There was only one bidder.

Yesterday, we saw the sale of an empty Kenner box with nothing inside for US$281.  It wasn’t even in perfect condition.  If an empty box sells for that kind of money, what about the other extreme?  How much would an ALIEN figure inside a perfect condition box sell for?

Well, we are now fortunate enough to find out. Straight on the heels of the empty box sale comes this pristine condition Kenner ALIEN figure.  It is not only complete, it’s never been open and the contents have never been disturbed.  Being kept in an acrylic case will ensure its preservation against surface damage.  What’s more, this is an uncirculated figure, meaning it has never made it to the store shelving space for sale.  It’s been removed from a packing case with minimum handling and therefore has absolute minimum wear for its age.

If a 40 year old empty box can sell for hundreds of (US) dollars, then how much will this item sell for?  We won’t be talking about hundreds of dollars on this item.  We’ll be discussing thousands.

Bidding starts at US$3,500.   Let’s see where this goes.

eBay: Empty Kenner ALIEN Box Sold.

This empty Kenner ALIEN action figure box sold on eBay auction today for US$281.

This is the same empty box item listed for  ‘Buy Now’ in early May on eBay but failed to attract a buyer.  Aside from the main difference the item is now sold, it lacks the poster the earlier listing originally included.  This sale featured only the box with no extras.  The poster itself would have easily raised the value of the box had it been included in the listing.  Posters on their own can easily fetch US$100.

3 bidders participated in the auction. That’s at least 3 people prepared to buy this prize for at least US$199, the price at which the auction opened at.  Taking into consideration this sale includes only the box without the poster, unlike its prior listing, that’s an amazing amount of money – just for an empty box. No poster.  No insert.  No action figure.  The auction closed at US$281.

Empty Kenner ALIEN boxes like this one are rare but when they do become available on eBay, they will fetch hundreds of dollars without fail.  This is not unusual and the sale of this item at this price was expected.  I’m just surprised it didn’t sell when it was first listed.

eBay: Kenner ALIEN Toy Evaluation.

This poor decrepit fellow is currently available on eBay. At US$199.95, he’s an expensive old toy.  Let’s take a closer look at him, shall we? Let’s find out what he’s really worth.

Sadly, he’s in very beat up shape, covered in dust and showing obvious signs of serious wear and tear.  He’s also missing some critical parts.  His problems don’t uniquely stem from multiple missing parts, though, due to most remaining pieces being damaged in one way or another.  A full evaluation of the figure will reveal closer to what it’s really worth. eBay: Loose Kenner ALIEN Tail for Sale: $50

There’s always a few interesting Kenner ALIEN items for sale on eBay ranging from complete figures in boxes all the way down to loose parts stripped from the old toys.  Right now there’s a handful of items for sale from a tear down figure.  Notable among these items is a loose Kenner ALIEN tail.  The vendor is asking $49.99 for it.  That’s US$50 and not some other dollar currency that by comparison is worth less than the USD.

It looks like this 2nd hand tail piece from a 40 year old toy is in reasonably good condition.  Importantly, the tail isn’t broken at any point along its length. Of equal note is the presence of the tail tip. The small spike can be easily broken and this one is complete.  The stub that holds the tail into place is a little worn and burred – but that’s standard on most figures.  A serrated metal washer would normally hold the tail internally in place, biting into the stub and frequently leaves such minor damage.  These washers are frequently corroded resulting in the tail falling off the figure.

Is this loose tail actually worth US$49.99, though?  Let’s see how long it takes for this coiled piece of plastic to be sold.  Other Kenner ALIEN body parts are also available for sale by the same vendor.  A set of four screws priced at US$24.99, a left leg for US$24.99 and a right leg for US$24.99 are also available.

I’ve already inquired about other body parts such as both arms and the four tubes that stick out of the figure’s back – those items have already been sold.  Both torso halves are yet to be listed and I don’t think the head is available.  I neglected to ask about that item, assuming it to be sold already.
