eBay: 1979 Kenner ALIEN – Box & Poster Only – FOR SALE.

Listed on eBay today is a nice little package.  A box, actually.  An empty one.  It’s an original 1979 blue box the old 18 inch Kenner ALIEN toy was originally sold in.  The sale includes the poster as well.  But no figure.  Just the box and poster.  How much does the vendor want for this item?

Bidding on eBay starts at US$399.99 – for an empty box.

Yep.  That’s right.  A 40 year old empty box.  There’s no figure inside – and the red insert card is missing, too – but you do get the poster!  That’s always welcome.  These vintage boxes for the old Kenner ALIEN toy are hard to come by, there’s no doubt about that; and this one does look like it’s in decent condition.  It’s not perfect, but it’s in a decent state for packaging that’s 4 decades old.  Yes, that’s true.  Is it worth more than US$400 (About AU$570 in my local currency), though?  Someone will no doubt think so and I bet it gets sold.  Crazy stuff.  Then again, just about everything associated with this figure is crazy.

I think I’ll check back on this item in 9 days time.  See how much it gets sold for.  Sales for empty Kenner ALIEN action figure boxes are always fun to watch.

Happy ALIEN Day, 2019.

Today is April 26. Today we celebrate all things ALIEN.  Yippee!  It’s fantastic that we get a day to celebrate our favourite series of movies.  This year is special as it marks the 40th Anniversary of the first ALIEN movie released in 1979. Though, truth be told, the actual Anniversary date of its release is May 25.  …but shhh!  we’re not complaining.

All the same, since it’s release 40 years ago, ALIEN was also accompanied by a large array of tie-in merchandise.  In this regard, let’s not forget this celebration is also the 40th Anniversary of all good things consumable relating to the movie 4 decades ago.

Upon its release, merchandise for ALIEN was in abundance.  You name it, it was available.  Ranging from toys and print media through to bubblegum cards and Halloween masks, ALIEN had a massive tie-in merchandise marketing exercise alongside it.  There was a movie novelisation, various magazines and posters, at least 5 jigsaw puzzles, a comic, bubblegum cards and a variety of other goodies released on top of all that. UPDATED: Prototype Gallery – 1979 Engineering Pilot Sample.

What better way to celebrate ALIEN Day than to post about the original 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy.  Today, we have this very special set of a dozen photos of a test pilot engineering sample.  I’ve posted about these early production pieces before but having a 2nd item surface right now is timing at its best!

Pilot box samples like this were used for multiple test purposes early in the figure’s production.  This rare and fascinating item has been added to the HIDEOUS PLASTIC page dedicated to Kenner ALIEN prototypes.

I’d like to thank Steve Dwyer for going well beyond just sharing this item with us all.  He’s removed the box – and the figure – from the acrylic display case it normally resides in for the sake of taking these photos.  Thank you, Sir.

Trio of Vintage 1979 Kenner ALIEN Goodies for Sale. CHEAP!

Do you want an instant collection of Kenner’s ALIEN product line from 1979 but don’t want to hunt around for eternity to find them at a low price?  Luckily for you, duffinopolis has one of each available for sale on eBay in a single lot.  That’s right, in one fell swoop, you could land yourself a Kenner ALIEN Movie Viewer, a US edition of the ALIEN board game and an 18″ tall ALIEN action figure – including the box!  All this for just US$799.99!  CHEAP!

Now, you may think I jest, but this is actually a decent price.  These 40 year old relics are high value collectibles now and finding a set of 3 like this is very rare.  You’ll find them for sale individually quite frequently but as a set?  That doesn’t happen too often.  As for the price of US$800?  Yup. That’s not too bad, either.

The action figure in the box alone can pull that amount of money – or more – and while the poster is missing and the red insert card is a facsimile the box itself is in good healthy condition and the figure is complete.  Consider US$600 to be an average price for this item on a good day.  That’s True.  Then there’s the board game.  You’ll find this is the common US edition included in this lot.  Nonetheless, it’s worth around US$100 – easily more.  …and that movie viewer?  Once again, it’s worth around US$100.  Of course, these are average ballpark figures.  You can find them cheaper – if you wait and hunt around but the US$800 price tag is pretty much what I would expect for this trio.

As an instant set of 3 highly collectible vintage pieces, it’s a good deal.  If I didn’t have them already, sure.  I’d grab ’em at this price.

Know You’re Buying a Kenner ALIEN.

During the course of the last 40 years, there’s been dozens of ALIEN action figures manufactured by many, many licencees.  The 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy was one of the first (pre-dated only by the MPC model kit). It’s also been reproduced at least 12 times.  As so many iterations of the figure have appeared over the past 4 decades, it’s not surprising some confusion may exist between different versions.  Take this ALIEN figure for sale on ebay for example.

He’s missing a few parts here and there; notably the dome on his head, the spike on his back and his tongue pieces are all absent.  These items are commonly missing from these old toys and their absence will significantly devalue the figure.  Nonetheless, he’s an original Kenner toy but the vendor has erroneously listed him as a Gentle Giant figure.  Continue reading

1979 Kenner ALIEN Ebay Bidding War.

Incredible as it may seem, 40 year old Kenner ALIEN action figures are actually worth a lot of money. With this information in mind, let’s take a look at one of the pitfalls of purchasing one of these old toys, buying it at auction on eBay. This recently sold sample is in less than stellar condition and it fetched a respectable sum. Significantly, the arms are broken off and half of the tongue is missing. At least the head dome is present- and that’s a feature many purchasers will pay good money for. This auction is over now so let’s take a look at how it went.

firstly, we should acquaint ourselves with the actual item for sale. Here’s the description the vendor provided for this listing, “Missing top part of inner jaw. Clear part that goes over head is a little cloudy.” It’s not a lot to go on but at the very least the vendor does have the integrity to acknowledge the figure isn’t complete and part of the tongue is missing.

1979 Kenner ALIEN – Buyer Beware!

It’s well known 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figures can fetch extremely high prices.  Find one in an unopened box, and the price escalates dramatically and you can expect them to be well over four figures.

Take this item for example, currently for sale on Ebay. It’s a little rough around the edges, as these boxes frequently are; but all the contents appear to be inside:  action figure, the red insert card it’s supposed to be attached to; and the B&W poster.  All of these items are present but is there anything missing?  Yes, actually.  There is.  Continue reading

Bilingual Box Photos Added to 1979 Kenner ALIEN Gallery.

Something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now was to add a set of photos of the little known bilingual variant of the Kenner ALIEN action figure box to the gallery dedicated to the old nefarious action figure.

While much of the box is essentially the same as the US edition, notable differences are scattered about regarding the text badging the packaging.  French and English share the common spaces on these items where only English is used on the US version.

You can inspect more photos of this international variant on the page dedicated to the Kenner ALIEN action figure.

Prototype Gallery Update: 1979 Kenner ALIEN Tail.

Adding content to the Prototype Gallery pages on HIDEOUS PLASTIC is always a joy.  Doubly so when such samples are from the very first 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure.

This item is a resin hard copy of the figure’s tail.  It’s broken in a few places but nonetheless it is a welcome addition to the Gallery page dedicated to the now 40 year old production samples of this incredible children’s toy.

This image was kindly provided by Derek Ho.  Thank you.

Prototype Gallery Update – ALIEN Resurrection Facehuggers.

This pair of creepy crawly items appeared among our last Prototype Gallery Update featuring Kenner’s 1997 Newborn figure. I thought it would be appropriate to add them to their own page. Their owner, Steve Dwyer, agreed to take more photos of them and share them with us all. So here they are, now occupying their very own gallery.

This pair of facehuggers are test shots of accessories that accompanied the Newborn (Left) and Call (Right) as part of Kenner’s 1997 range of ALIEN Resurrection action figures. More images have been added to the site and can be found here. Enjoy!

Thank you for these images, Steve.

Prototype Gallery Update – Xenopod Dragonfly Alien

I’m always happy to post new content into the Prototype ALIEN action figure gallery and this one is a beauty!

Here is one of the oddities known as a ‘Xenopod Alien’ or ‘Locust Alien’.  Kenner were experimenting with this concept in various forms during the mid 1990s and this 4 winged variant sample has now been added to the page dedicated to these prototypes.

Thank you Steve Dwyer for sharing these images with us all

About that 1979 ALIEN Board Game.

In 1979, Kenner Products released three retail items designed to capitalise on the then recently released ALIEN movie. While the famous 18 inch tall children’s toy was the main item in this range of merchandise a (2 to 4 player) board game and a manually operated crank handle one minute movie viewer were also made available to the public.

Here we will be focusing on the board game, specifically some of its curious features along with exploring other international variants of the well known item. One particular feature of note is the cover of the board game which depicts a cropped image of one of Kenner’s 18 inch toy appearing against a still shot of the three Nostromo crew members about to enter the newly discovered derelict space craft of unknown origin.

In this regard, it is notable all images appearing on the package art of these items featuring the famous ALIEN toy and logo have all been censored, permanently disfiguring and concealing prominent evidence this figure was actually a prototype. It is possibly either a hard copy or test shot of the toy which differs from final retail samples and reflects Kenner’s frequent use of such prototype use during promotional exercises of their products. Here, conspicuously absent from the image, is the translucent nature of the dome on the head through which the glow in the dark paint application of the creature’s “evil brain” is normally visible. 1979 Kenner ALIEN Action Figure Carapace on Ebay.

EDiT:  Well, that sold quick.  Gone within 2 days!

Here’s a nice little item I found for sale on Ebay. It’s an original head cover (carapace or dome – it’s known as all these things) for the 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure.

These things crop up about once every couple of months or so on the service.  While this 5 inch piece of concave translucent plastic may appear to be sold at a high price, these things usually do sell on Auction rather ‘Buy Now’ and can close anywhere between US$60 to US$110 so, yes, this item is a little on the high end of that pricing range.  Nonetheless, I’ve seen them sell for comparable amounts before and I expect this one to not last very long at all.  The vendor will receive the asking price as the US$100+ price tag isn’t out of the question. Prototype Gallery Update – 1994, Swarm Alien.

I’m still in the process of tidying up my former residence.  Nonetheless, I still want to take some time to post quick updates on the site.  Here is a welcome update to the ever growing selection of Kenner ALIEN prototype section.

The Swarm Alien was one of Kenner’s more unusual ALIENS action figures the company released during the 1990’s.  You’ll find images of a stunning prototype sample of this peculiar toy right here.

A very special thanks to Steve Dwyer for sharing images of this odd Kenner piece from his collection.

Mr. Tendril’s BIG Make Over Now Live.

I’ve been in possession of this old Kenner ALIEN action figure for a while now.  I spent about 6 weeks working on rehabilitating this old toy.  Recently I finished all that is required and he’s now ready to be displayed publicly.

This is no normal Kenner ALIEN, though.  He was a wreck when I first acquired him.  He’d already been customised by a previous owner and had since fallen into a state of substantial disrepair.  I took it upon myself to make him ‘whole’ once again.  A complete restoration was out of the question – the previous custom work could not be undone.  The solution?  Embrace those extant changes and transform him into something new.  This old Kenner toy has become the oddity now known as ‘Mr. Tendril’.

The entire process from start to finish is documented in this lengthy piece.  Almost a dozen pages of it, actually.  You can start reading right here and marvel at the weird and wonderful rise to display worthy status of the Amazing Mr. Tendril!

Moving House Archeological Discovery.

As you may be aware, I am currently moving house.  Anyone who’s done so will tell you about their ‘re-discoveries’ of forgotten goodies stowed away for long years of safe keeping. Here’s one I thought I’d share with you.
It’s a box full of 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure legs.  I have no idea how many are in here; but they’ve been in storage for 20 years, possibly longer.  Nice find.  Other parts may yet be uncovered as excavations continue in the Lost World nether regions of my previous residence.

Prototype Gallery Update – 1992, Gorilla Alien.

Ah, it’s been a while since I’ve had the joy of announcing any new character additions to this site’s Prototype Gallery.  It’s with great pleasure then that Kenner’s Gorilla Alien joins the ranks of production samples and prototypes.

This figure has definitely a popular item among fans and collectors and a number of prototype samples of Kenner’s 1992 Gorilla Alien have been added for your pleasure.

Special thanks to Derek Ho for his kindness in allowing me to post these images.

Prototype Gallery Update – 1979 Kenner ALIEN.

Today is May 25, making today the 39th Anniversary of the release of ALIEN in US cinemas.  As far as I am concerned today is the real ALIEN Day – it carries a lot more significance than that 4/26 silliness, fun as it is.  Let’s celebrate this fine occasion with something truly unique; nothing short of a set of valuable relics from those bygone days when our multi jawed friend first started terrorising innocent audience members.  Those poor souls who thought ALIEN was just going to be another light hearted space adventure like Star Wars, which was released exactly 2 years earlier.  …but I digress.

What we see here is a set of wax dorsal appendages (and tail) from an early sculpt of the original 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure.  These parts – along with a handful of others – are all that survive of this unique version of the figure.  From these wax sculpts, moulds would have been generated from which the final figure would have eventually been cast.  Yeah.  They’re kind of important when you realise you are looking at the earliest known stage of the figure’s 3D development.

This image is just one of several that have been added to the page dedicated to prototype items associated with the old 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy.

Thank you Derek Ho for sharing these images, right on time to celebrate the movie’s 39th Anniversary.

Prototype Gallery Update – Arachnid Alien.

Today, for your entertainment, we have a set of fresh images of the head of Kenner’s 1993 Arachnid Alien.  This squat little critter’s rotating rubber head could squirt water.  It also has a switch on the figure’s back to operate its legs and arms.

You can find a couple more images of this curious prototype head on its very own gallery page dedicated to this item right here.

Thank you, Cesar AV Rarámuri, for the kind permission to post these images on our gallery.

OPERATION: ALIENS Style Manual Contents.

Sometimes, really interesting stuff emerges from nowhere.  Like the style guide for Kenner’s OPERATION: ALIENS tie in merchandise.  A range of toys suitable for children AGES 4 AND UP, yet based on an R-rated movie.  This time Kenner did it right.

Images of the style guide – and an explanation of what it actually is – has taken up permanent residency on our Prototype Figures pages.  Well worth a peek into an obscure and little known process of movie tie-in merchandise development.
