eBay – Kenner ALIEN Crest for Sale.

Ah, it’s been a good few months since one of these crests for the 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy have been available on eBay. When these things do appear on the service, they are always pricey. This one is being listed by the seller for US$125. There’s no “Make Offer” option, either.

These things are in demand by owners of the Kenner ALIEN wanting to complete their 40 year old vintage toy that could easily be missing this part. Today, around 80% of samples of the toy are without this feature as it is easily broken off. US$125 is a lot to ask for an aged piece of plastic that is showing obvious signs of scratching and wear. Nonetheless, the vintage quality and increasing demand for diminishing supply of genuine items like this will only drive prices up. This item won’t stay listed for very long.

eBay – Pair of Kenner ALIENS for Sale.

A relatively common find in the wild, this pair of sub standard Kenner ALIEN toys are being sold as a pair on eBay. The seller is asking for US$400 for the pair but is of course willing to accept offers. Broken, missing parts, dirty and modified. It’s a lot to ask for a pair of beat up forty year old toys, incomplete at best. There are so many problems with these items, it’s not even worth listing them. Significantly, there aren’t enough parts between them to assemble a complete sample. You’d still be missing a right arm and the head dome. Though, disassembling them to build as complete a sample as possible is a viable option. However, for the cost of such an exercise, for US$400 you can purchase one in perfect condition and maybe score a box as well.

Items in this condition frequently sell between US$50 to US$120. This is definitely a “make an offer” situation but more than US$200 is still not advisable. At that price, you can easily purchase a complete item, which as stated above, isn’t even possible with this pair. Now at US$200 this purchase would be ideal, if you already have a figure(s) that could use spare parts from both of these dilapidated samples. You could then sell on the leftover pieces individually and get a substantial amount of your money back. If not all of it. Worth it if you need a left arm, a pair of tongue parts and a shoulder crest. Sell the rest for around US$20 each, and yeah. Then it’s totally worth it. Not at US$400, though.

Assembled MPC ALIEN Model Kit Photos Needed.

Over the next couple of weeks, I will be working to complete an article investigating the different versions of the MPC ALIEN model kit here on HIDEOUS PLASTIC. I know six variants were published. These appeared during the years 1979 (Three samples: US, Ca, Ja.), 1984, 1999 and finally one more was published as recently as 2013. If anyone has any additional information about these kits, or of any variants including unofficial, bootleg and/or garage pressings, please let me know. I am also very interested in publishing images of assembled versions of the kit. As assembled samples can vary wildly, it would be ideal to post a gallery of finished kit items in the article. If you have any assembled MPC ALIEN kits (from any year) and would like to have photos of them on display, please contact me. Facebook is good. Fully or partially assembled, raw unpainted or fully painted or in any state whatsoever are all welcome contributions at this stage.

Please keep in mind, if you do choose to share photos to be included, you will respectfully retain full copyright on all published work and you will also be credited appropriately in the article. Please don’t send me photos other people’s uncredited work. That’s not cool. Instead, please pass the word around and help make this piece as thorough as possible.

I expect to publish the article sometime in mid March. We’ll see how well that pans out. Right now I am just getting started with early drafts. I expect it to be quite lengthy.

eBay – Incomplete ALIEN in Box.

Wait. Didn’t we just see an incomplete Kenner ALIEN toy; and another one in a box get listed just the other day? Yes, Sir. We sure did. Here’s another one. This sample is in a significantly used and played with condition. The auction started at US$100. Within 24 hours, it’s doubled already. Brilliant! This is one rough package, in so many ways. Nonetheless, the listing does include the box, the red insert card and the dome. Oh, and a severely beat up old toy with missing tongue parts. The poster is absent too; but at this stage with bidding already well under way, this listing is as good as sold. It matters little that the toy itself is dirty, battered, scratched and scuffed. A good wash in the kitchen sink and a rub down with some plastic polish compatible with the blended styrene this old toy is made will do wonders to improve the quality of its appearance. Just add some missing mouth parts – if you can find them online – and this four decades old ALIEN toy in its box will become the pride of someone’s collection. Currently, bidding sits at US$200; but by the time this item actually does sell, that figure will have easily doubled. Not bad for a dirty, beat up, incomplete old toy in a rough looking box that’s not even rare.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN, Box and Poster for Sale.

Here’s a nice pick up for someone. For the low, low price (Hah!) of only US$850, you can be the proud owner of a vintage, 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy, including its box and poster! This wonderful item is now available on eBay.This is actually a very decent looking figure. The box is good and straight, too. That poster has a minimum amount of wear as well and it looks to be hardly creased! Such a great score for someone, indeed. It’s only disappointment (aside from the tall order price tag) is the fact this fantastic item is incomplete. What’s missing from this excellent item? The red insert card that would have once upon a time held the figure securely in place within the box is missing. It’s no big deal, but for completeness sake – and if you want to spend this kind of money on an old toy – you would want all parts of the figure and the packaging to be present. Nonetheless, this is still a great pick up as the content that is present is otherwise complete and in fantastic shape. Worth it, if you have the money to burn and can live without a sheet of red folded corrugated cardboard with a few numbers punched into it.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN Toy for Sale.

There’s been a significant slow down in recent listings of these vintage Kenner ALIEN toys on eBay lately. This is no doubt due to the impact Covid-19 has on the world and many people have become concerned in more immediate and pressing issues. Nonetheless, here’s an average condition sample of ye olde Kenner Alien action figure being auctioned on eBay. Bidding starts at a lofty US$198. He’s a little rough around the edges, broken and missing a few parts – and the seller wants around US$200 for it. What else is new?

At a glance, it’s not a bad looking sample of the toy. That doesn’t mean it’s not without issues. It’s missing the usual parts – the dome on the head, the crest on its back and both halves of the tongue. Unfortunately, it’s issues don’t end there, either. Let’s take a closer look at this average condition candidate for your collection of grisly space monsters. Continue reading

eBay – New in Box ALIEN Action Figure for Sale.

UPDATE: This item has been sold.

Here’s something you don’t see every day, it’s a “Vintage New in Box Rare 1979 Kenner 18″ Alien Action Figure” for sale. Well, maybe not every day. Maybe every second day. At least once a week for sure. Anyway, the buyer is asking US$749.00 (or best offer) for this dilapidated box and figure, both missing parts.

There’s a lot to said about these old action figures. My favourite statement regarding them is “There is nothing normal about this toy”; and this is a perfect example. While the box is clearly beat up and missing its window panes and the smoky translucent dome piece for the head is absent, this less than desirable sample does highlight one of the great facts regarding these grotesque vintage toys. Let’s take a closer look. Continue reading

eBay – Another “Rare” Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

Ah, it’s another one of those so-called “rare” 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figures all the cool kids are clamoring over for sale on eBay. This one is from Canada and it’s a “Buy Now” listing of Ca$2,000 (US$1,530). It includes the figure, the poster and a beat up old box. Those features alone don’t make it rare as boxed ALIEN figures appear on the service on a regular basis, almost weekly. Just wait. Another will appear soon. So frequently do they appear it’s almost like they are scheduled to do so. They are simply just not as rare as sellers will so readily claim. In which case, is it possible this listing may possess some other quality to justify this commonly overused claim of being “rare”? Let’s take a closer look at this sample for sale.

At least it’s all there – well, most of it, anyway – the toy, box and poster. Each of them show signs of damage or aging of some description. Nonetheless, it’s a great start  to be complete in this regard and all three together makes them valuable. Of significance, this item is a non-standard version of the toy. This item is not only being sold in Canada – it was made there. This is important because most Kenner ALIEN toys were manufactured in the USA. This one wasn’t and there are differences present in all the component parts of the package. Unlike the US version, this box and poster are bilingual, printed in English and French. The toy itself will have about a dozen different variations including – but not limited to – being constructed of a lighter grey styrene, 1979 production details stamped on the side of the jaw trigger will be absent and glue residue will be present on the arms. All of these features are limited to the Canadian version of the toy. Other anomalies will be present too, but rest assured, this sample differs from its counterparts produced south of the border in many albeit small details. Continue reading

eBay – “Rare” Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

UPDATE: Sold for US$415. (5 bidders.)

Here’s another 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy for sale on eBay. Apparently, it’s “rare”. People must have a different appreciation of the word to what I believe it to mean. This is the second Kenner ALIEN freshly listed on eBay I have seen described this way, today. lol. Bidding starts at US$199. A very reasonable kick off to the sale, I say.Admittedly, this one is in very good condition. Excellent condition, actually; but even complete figures such as this are still relatively common and do appear frequently on eBay. Even if it included a box and poster, it would still not be rare – unless my understanding of the meaning of the word is seriously out of touch with reality. Nonetheless, this a great figure. It’s complete, in very good shape with only minor faults – and even those aren’t going to worry whoever purchases this fine example of the old vintage Kenner toy. Continue reading

eBay – “Rare Authentic” 1979 Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

UPDATE: This item has been sold.

If you live in Canada and would like to own a 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy, right now there is one up for auction on eBay. Bidding starts at Ca$500 (US$382) for this “authentic” and “rare” toy. However, it does come with some caveats. Let’s check him out.Let’s get the notion this toy is rare out of the way, first. It’s not. Yesterday’s news article on this blog provided some ballpark figures as to how many were actually produced. Now that financial sales figures of the toy have been unearthed, it is possible to speculate somewhere between 110,000 and 150,000 of these toys were made by Kenner in the US and to this day, they still appear frequently on secondary markets. They appear on eBay regularly; at an almost daily rate. The high frequency of their appearance on the service means claims they are rare are false; but it makes a great selling point, right? Nonetheless, it’s not a credible claim. Continue reading

1979 Kenner ALIEN Toy Sales Figures Unearthed.

How many ALIEN toys did Kenner actually produce in 1979? Up until now, any number you could care to nominate would have been considered viable; but now we have evidence that suggests a ballpark figure can now be estimated. Recently, some Kenner Products paperwork has surfaced that reveals some critical Kenner’s sales figures. In 1995-96 a sales report was generated within Hasbro, who owned Kenner at the time. The report covered data from 1973 to 1995 for all US domestic sales for every toy line they made during those years

As the 18 inch ALIEN toy was released in 1979, its sales information is also included in the paperwork. The previous best estimate cited to me of how many of these were actually made was 10,000 units, dispatched to retailers. It turns out this number is a gross under-estimate and the truth is significantly higher. Continue reading

eBay – Kenner ALIEN Dome and Arm for Sale.

UPDATE: Sold within 24 hours with an accepted offer.

This is a nice looking pair of vintage Kenner ALIEN parts being auctioned on eBay. It’s a head dome and right arm for the old toy. Bidding starts at US$125. The dome appears to be in great condition, with no cracks, scratches, minimal blemishes and all 5 nubs present on the sides and back of the piece. The arm also appears to be in great shape although it is missing the rubber anchor that connects it to the central post within the figure. If you need a right arm, this one is a great piece and fabricating a means of connecting it to the toy is relatively easy.

This pair is an excellent quality pick up for someone wanting to spend at least US$125 on a pair of forty year old plastic parts to help complete their vintage ALIEN toy. Not too bad pricing, actually, considering the head dome itself can sell for upwards of US$100 alone. You just have to be lucky enough to be someone who wants both of these parts to truly make it worth purchasing. BARGAIN!!!

eBay – Kenner ALIEN Toy for Sale.

UPDATE: Sold for US$122 (8 bidders.)

Here’s an ideal sample of the Kenner ALIEN toy if you’re looking for something to renovate. This figure is missing a few parts but he’s an ideal candidate for some work that can restore this forlorn grub monkey into a decent piece, worthy of display. He’s listed for auction on eBay right now with bids starting at US$49.99.He’s missing the usual pieces, the head covering, dorsal crest and tongue pieces but the rest of him is there – it just needs a little attention. It won’t take much to take this severed limb figure and make him a hit piece in anyone’s collection. A good clean and re-attach that right arm is a good and simple way to get him look fantastic again. Even the glue residue on his back where the crest is supposed to sit may be aged and perished enough to fall away with some careful chipping with a screwdriver or similar tool. A figure in this sad state may easily become a centerpiece on your trophy shelf and is well worth any bid you may make on this fellow. He’s a beauty and would typically sell for around US$120-US$150 mark, even in this dilapidated, broken and rundown state. There’s a biomechanical gem in the rough here that just needs a little polishing. He’ll still be missing a few parts but those can be tended to at a later date.

eBay – Degraded Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

Sometimes, peoples’ expectations of what of these old Kenner ALIEN toys are actually worth is way outside of what the real world will deliver. I’m not talking about pristine boxed samples of the toy being listed for figures in excess of two thousand US dollars. That’s become the norm. I’m referring to seriously sub-standard items like this one currently available on eBay listed with a price tag of US$495. To think at one point, these things were discounted to US$4.95 to clear unwanted stock – and that reduced price point included the figure in an unopened box. Just look at this forlorn old toy and ask yourself how is US$495 even expected? This figure is in below average condition and for the price being asked, you can purchase an excellent sample of this very same toy that will include the box AND poster. This one has a shopping list of problems you will want to be aware of before forking out nearly US$500. Let’s take a closer look. This is going to be fun!

Starting at the head, the dome is missing. Also missing are both halves of the tongue and the upper set of teeth, leaving only one of all four mouth parts remaining. This means altogether the head is missing no less than four of five pieces that should be present. As the spine of the back of the toy is also missing, that’s a total of five parts missing. That’s a hefty tally of essential parts gone AWOL. So far, this does not look good. But wait! There’s more! Let’s delve deeper into this incomplete figure for sale Continue reading

eBay – Average Condition Alien for Sale.

UPDATE: This listing was ended by the seller because there was an error in the listing. It has since been relisted. UPDATE 2: This item is no longer available.

Enough talk about these silly Mexican bootleg ALIEN toys. It’s time to get serious again! What can be more serious than illegally manufactured product from another country making it’s way into your hands? How about an average quality four decades old Kenner ALIEN toy featuring multiple missing parts being sold on eBay for US$300. “What? An incomplete forty year old toy for sale for that MUCH..? Are you serious?!” you may well ask. Yup. I’m serious. The link is live. Go check it out. Buy it if you want it. This particular sample is missing at least four parts. The dome on the head, both parts of the tongue and the crest on his back. These features are frequently absent from these old toys and indeed they’re all missing from this sample. He’s a little dusty and a good clean wouldn’t hurt, either. Nonetheless its arms, legs, head and tail are all present and attached making this condition very common. For me this combination of commonly missing and present parts in this arrangement defines what constitutes an “average condition” Kenner ALIEN figure. There are many, many of them out in the world sharing this similar state but is he worth US$300, though? Continue reading

Ebay – Complete 1979 ALIEN for Sale.

UPDATE: This item sold for US$281.56 (9 bidders).

The constant stream of 1979 Kenner ALIEN toys continues with the listing of this slightly broken sample on eBay. This one is being auctioned with bids starting at US$100. He’s complete with all parts present, just needing his left arm re-attached. Bidding has already commenced.Yeah, he’s in a “not too bad” state even if his arm is severed as that issue is an easy fix. All of his other parts are present including the dome, shoulder crest and all mouth parts. He appears to be relatively clean, too. It will be interesting to see how high this item climbs as the clock ticks down. It’s a safe bet this fellow will eventually sell in access of US$200. Anything less than that will be remarkable. Anything above US$200 can be expected. Hilarious.

eBay – Vintage Kenner ALIEN Photo for Sale.

UPDATE: This item sold for US$42.00 (2 bidders.)

Here’s something you don’t see very often. A vintage photo of a pair of guys playing with their Kenner ALIEN toys taken sometime in 1980 listed for sale on eBay. Bidding starts at US$9.99. This is a great, personal relic for sale and while it is a little whethered and torn along its left edge, that imperfection doesn’t prevent it from being a unique item and wonderful addition to any ALIEN collection. What’s this item actually worth? Let’s follow the auction and find out. I do like to post sales results to Kenner ALIEN listings such as this as UPDATES on News post where it originally occurred. This auction listing is for 10 days.

Party hats and Aliens. What a combo! I’m not sure if the Aliens are shaking hands or arm wrestling in front their anonymous owners. Both, is a valid speculation, I guess. I do know one thing for sure. Photos of this nature are rare and I’ve seen about a dozen images of a similar vintage. Such images usually feature children at Christmas 1979, opening up their brand new Kenner Alien toys. I have also seen a great photo taken sometime in the 1980s of a young Adam Savage (of Mythbusters fame), proudly using the severed Kenner ALIEN head to mimic the movie’s chestburster scene, serving it up as part of a thanksgiving dinner with the head mounted square and center in the turkey itself. Great stuff! So, these things are around and I do love seeing them.

eBay – Slightly Imperfect Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

Here’s a great sample of the 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy for sale on eBay. The head dome, the spike on his back and all mouth parts are present and all of his moving parts and features work perfectly fine. It’s unfortunate then, he has some damage to his head dome. It’s been melted slightly on one side, scarring it irreparably. The seller expecting to sell this item for US$470 (offers accepted) which includes the heat damage imperfection. BONUS!Aside from the heat damage on the lower, middle edge of the right side of the dome, it’s a nice piece. US$470 is a lot to ask for, though; and it’s a good thing the rest of the figure is complete and in fine shape. He also manages to hold a pose with his arms, which is quite a feat in itself considering the neoprene anchors used to attach the limbs to an internal post are as old as the toy itself. eBay – Kenner ALIEN in Box with 2 Posters.

UPDATE: This listing has ended; presumed Sold.

Here’s something a little unusual.  A 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy complete in box. The figure is nice. The box is a bit beat up. The red insert card looks OK. So far, it’s all very normal and relatively common. It’s the presence of two posters that is of genuine curiosity, here. All this can be yours for US$1,750 on eBay. Including both posters! It’s a lot of money to spend on an old toy just to have a duplicate of the poster, though. Yet, that second poster can easily be sold on eBay for anywhere between US$50 and US$120 dollars. The figure itself is a good quality sample, complete with all components in place and has the added attraction of being able to hold a pose, which itself is uncommon. …but is it worth US$1,750, even with a duplicate item thrown in for added value? Probably not. Mind you, the vendor is willing to take offers on this item. So it will sell. That’s a certainty, despite the fact this item is neither rare nor in mint condition. Continue reading

eBay – Complete Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

UPDATE: Sold for US$405 (4 bidders).

Looking to spend a minimum of US$300 on a forty year old toy that sold poorly last century? You are in luck! On eBay right now, you can bid to your heart’s content on this fabulous looking Kenner ALIEN toy. He’s all there. Complete and looking fantastic and while a starting bid of US$300 is present, the vendor is also offering a “Buy Now” price of US$450. All ballpark figures by current standards for one of these toys in this condition. He’s nigh on perfect, too, with only minor paint applied to the bulging details on the sides of his head to serve as a distraction from a near immaculate presentation. These look like an old customisation as there is some signs of chipping on the added finish. This is a good thing as the old paint may even be removed with minimum effort by just prying carefully at it with a pointed tool. Some paint won’t come off, of course; but this application looks like it might come away with ease. If you do want to remove previous custom paintwork from these old toys, remember(!) it’s important to use a non-acetone remover as common acetone based paint removers are harmful to the toy and will dissolve the styrene it’s made of. So be very careful if you choose to remove paint. Continue reading
