Here’s a nice pick up for someone who can afford such niceties during a global health crisis, it’s a complete, forty year old Kenner ALIEN toy. It looks good and clean, includes the box along with the poster and the entire package will only set you back a measly US$725 (or Best Offer) on eBay. CHEAP! Well, if you can throw money around like this, I guess.
The figure appears to be good with all parts present as per the vendor’s description. The box looks to be almost complete. It has the typical marks of aging; various creases, mild warping of shape and occasional stains. The poster is in matching condition. There are 2 important points of note regarding the box. Firstly, the red insert card is present, which is a good thing. Secondly, the window in the top of the box may be missing which is unfortunate because that absent feature alone deprives it of any claim to completeness. It’s difficult to determine if the window is present with such an incomplete photo documentation included in the listing. It’s worth contacting the vendor and finding out. Otherwise, if you have a spare US$725 just lying around in a shoe box with nothing else to spend it on, this is a perfect solution to your overflowing money problems.

The figure itself is only missing the dome but it’s otherwise complete. The crest is present on the back, the jaws work as they should, the head paint is in good state and still glows in the dark; and it even holds a pose with its arms, which is always welcome. A figure in this condition alone will sell for around US$150 to US$250, so the starting bid is very reasonable. Alas, the box itself is in terrible condition, crushed, torn and missing multiple pieces along with a variety of other imperfections, hardly making it a desirable piece. Importantly, it’s still a 1979 Kenner ALIEN box and while it is in seriously distressed state, it will find a home. 
This sample appears to be a little dusty and he does have a scuff mark on his paint coated face. It’s a small concern when the rest of the figure is all there. The Crest on the back may be seated in a broken slot as it appears to droop a little – but he’s in great shape. Nonetheless, at this low, low price a complete sample like this will be scooped up pretty fast. I’ll be very surprised if he’s still available tomorrow morning when I get out of bed. I can’t wait to find out!
Loose pieces from dismantled Kenner ALIEN toys like this frequently appear on eBay. Heads. Domes. Arms. Those funny shaped things sticking out of its back. Sooner or later, they all turn up on eBay. Sometimes in good shape. Sometimes not so good. This leg is broken at the hip with a shattered spindle and flange, reducing it to a severed limb that won’t reattach to the torso without some measured care and attention. Other than the damage present at the join, the piece looks to be in decent shape. Which raises the question, can this item be repaired and returned to the toy?
It’s a good looking figure, too. Complete in all details. Clean and capable of holding a pose. That’s always welcome. The pose on this item is strong enough it looks like it could have come straight off the cover of the 1979 ALIEN board game. A well preserved figure including all parts and no breakages present like this one will easily sell for around the vendor’s listed price of US$350. It’s not too much to ask US$350 for an ugly 40 year old toy nobody wanted back in 1979. Really. You read that right. Under normal conditions without a world wide health crisis forcing everyone indoors and playing havoc with the global economy, this item would sell quickly at this price. It may still do so for one simple fact: There is nothing normal about this toy. No box or poster is included in this sale.
No, really. This item is a Bargain, despite the obviously loose lower right dorsal appendage hanging off it’s back. Serious collectors of the vintage toy, take note this is a very rare item. Now, I hear people say the Kenner ALIEN toy is rare, anyway but it’s actually not. Notwithstanding the fact these toys are now forty years old, the US pressing of the toy is relatively common. This item is from Canada – and that’s important because there are significant differences between the toy made and shipped within the US; and those made and shipped elsewhere awarding this particular sample the enviable status of being genuinely rare! 
The poster itself is in good shape. For a forty year old piece of vintage printed material it can be forgiven for being imperfect; and imperfect it is indeed. It has a few bruised edges, sticky tape has been applied to each corner and a couple of tack holes are present. Nonetheless, it is straight and lacks any major tears. A starting bid of US$59 on this uncommon item will attract some fast attention. This poster will sell without any trouble.
It’s a complete looking figure with a dome on its head and the crest on its back. It’s always great to see these two body parts are in place – even if the dome is placed back to front on the head. Hey, it’s an easy fix. It’s as easy as picking it up, turning it around one hundred and eighty degrees and then placing it down on the head in its correct orientation. It’s just odd to see it sitting in this queer fashion. Then again, it does highlight how ill fitting this smoky piece actually is and the vendor can’t be blamed for the poor construction technique Kenner used to fix it in place. 
There’s clearly going to be a caveat regarding this item. Maybe more than one, actually. Firstly, let’s get the box out of the way. It’s clearly battered and mangled. It’s window is missing and it’s had its lid ripped free. At least the lid hasn’t been discarded and is present in the sale. The box is a mess for sure; but by the same token it’s still a genuine forty year old original Kenner ALIEN box. Despite its dilapidated state, it’s going to be worth upwards of US$100 if sold individually. The red insert card and poster are missing. 
Despite being opened, he’s 99% all there. You get almost everything and depending on how pedantic you are as a collector, this item will make a fine addition to your trophy shelf. All critical components you would want appear to be present in this package – almost. Here’s a quick checklist of how your expectations for this item are going to be fulfilled. 
Firstly, there’s no box included in this listing. It just includes the figure and the the red insert card. Fortunately, this card is a genuine item and not a facsimile/fake/reproduction. These red, corrugated cards were present inside the blue box when Kenner originally released the ALIEN. It’s purpose was to provided safe and stable transportation of the toy during transit to stores in 1979 with the toy strapped directly onto the card, preventing it from moving about inside the box and potentially being damaged.
These things never really did fit adequately upon the head of the 40 year old toy even when it was released. As a result, they are frequently absent from these toys today. About 80% of Kenner ALIEN toys are missing this piece; but is it rare? “Uncommon” would be a better description. This one looks to be in generally OK condition. It is showing evidence of scratches and other blemishes but it is complete with all 5 nubs needed to (inadequately) secure the dome in place. It’s a decent addition to help complete someone’s four decades old blended styrene space monster. Starting at US$70 it may appear the vendor is expecting a lot for this concave piece of ancient plastic but as this body part can easily sell for upwards of US$100, I will be watching this item with great interest. Let’s see how high it climbs.
Kenner stamped all of these figures made in the USA with some basic manufacturer’s information; and visible on the right side of the trigger at the underside of the back of the head are the words “CPG PRODUCTS CORP. 1979”. It is a sure indication your Kenner ALIEN is a genuine item produced in that country. However, it’s absence does not necessarily mean a figure is a facsimile, or a bootleg or otherwise unlicenced or unauthorised product – and its presence doesn’t guarantee authenticity, either. 
Custom ALIEN toys appear frequently on eBay. People often apply paint to them and make other modifications like this. Toes and faces are most frequently altered but this one has had paint applied to his chest, as well, lending a very striking appearance. The glow in the dark paint on the head is covered, so it probably won’t work any more. It’s teeth have been given a similar treatment, so they have lost their sheen. He’s also missing a few parts, too. Both tongue halves are absent as is the dome on the head and the crest on his back is also gone. Of interest, though, the slot into which that crest belongs is relatively intact. Sure, it’s showing some signs of stress discoloration but it’s still all there. You could easily fit a replacement crest into place and it would probably sit correctly, without falling out. It’s an interesting figure and notwithstanding the personal flourishes afforded to it, for $150, it will probably find a new home before too long if someone makes an offer.
