UPDATED: MPC ALIEN Model Kits.

The page dedicated to MPC ALIEN model kits has expanded since first it was published little more than a week. So it’s time to announce an update. Response has been very good and welcome with some great samples of the assemble kit being added. Take this superb example by Rainer Engel:Yep. That’s the MPC ALIEN kit; and it sure has been put to some fantastic use. This item and others have been added to the expanding article; which is becoming lengthy and has now been divided into two separate pages.

Page 1 is dedicated to production variations of the kit.
Page 2 contains image galleries featuring assembled versions by various modelers.

I would like to thank the following people whose images appear in this article with their kind permission: Baptiste Coudert, JoAnne Esposito, Old Dogs Trading Post, Sabers, Ingo Siemon, Rainer Engel, Evan Wardwell, Lou Fusco and Terry Jones.

If you would like to see your assembled MPC ALIEN kit (regardless of your modeling skills) appear on page 2 of this article, please contact me. Credit will be provided.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN for Sale in UK.

Are you living in the UK right now and want to own a 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy? Well, you’re in luck! One is available on eBay right now. Sure, it’s an auction item and bidding starts at GBP 220 (US$305); but that’s about what you’d expect to buy for one of these vintage toys now, anyway.Unlike in the US where Kenner ALIEN toys are constantly appearing and being sold, these things appear on the UK service about once every two weeks or so. They’re common; but infrequent. This one is complete; and that’s a good thing. On the other hand, complete doesn’t mean perfect. This sample does have one obvious issue of broken dorsal appendages hanging off its back. Two of them have come free and now floating inverted. It’s an easy fix, if you are prepared to disassemble the toy. Which isn’t hard to do. Other than that, it looks good. It will probably have other signs of wear and the dome looks straight.

eBay – Wrecked Kenner ALIEN Box for Sale.

UPDATE: Yup. Sold. I knew this old, empty box would sell fast.

Here it is! That future jewel in the crown of your ALIEN collection! An empty Kenner box is up for sale on eBay for the low, low price of only US$135. CHEAP! Of course, there’s a catch. There’s always a catch, huh. The box is a little beat up, missing the window on the front and the entire top is missing too. Also, it’s empty. Just the box. There is no gruesome toy accompanying this sale. All this and more – missing – for just US$135. BARGAIN!The unusual thing about this listing is simple. This isn’t anything unusual. At all. I know this declaration may appear to have all the qualities of an oxymoron; but it’s true. While this old battered box lacks various features of the front window, the top (and its accompanying window) along with the red insert card (Not to mention the complete absence of the ALIEN toy that should be inside.) it really is a ballpark figure for this piece of packaging.

Consider this. Had this box been more complete, with it’s top still attached and both windows present, it would easily break the US$200 mark. There’s no doubt in my mind this empty piece of four decades old printed and folded light card will sell at US$135. I have seen it happen before, more than once. That’s a reasonable price now for just five sides of a piece of degraded and forgotten packaging that’s been left sitting on a dark garage shelf for the past four decades. Now, if all six sides had been present, then yes. It would be genuinely cheap at this price. Regardless, this vacant and damaged item won’t stay listed for very long. It will definitely sell.

Sigourney Weaver ODDA Magazine Shoot.

Back in January 2018, ODDA Magazine, a high end biannual international fashion publication, printed an issue dedicated to Sigourney Weaver in issue No.15. At least one full page photo in that issue captures her holding onto an ALIEN action figure. It’s a great photo, too. Featuring Weaver, looking as trim as ever and smiling coyly as she dangles the Alien by her side in a featureless room with yellow roses littered about her feet.

Enough about Weaver, though. lol. The figure in question used in this photo is of more interest to me. This item is Super7’s ALIENS Classic Toy Edition, released in 2017. Super7 released four different variants of this Kenner tribute ALIENS item. A facsimile prototype first appeared at San Diego Comic Con in 2016, the Classic Toy Edition in 2017 (The item in Weaver’s hand), a translucent green version merely weeks after the Classic Toy Edition became available was released in 2017. Finally a faux bronze finish figure known as the Marine Ambush Edition appeared in 2019. All of which have since sold out at the Super7 webstore. Details of these items can be found on this page.

ODDA Magazine is a “biannual fashion magazine replete with editorials and interviews propelled by brilliant artistry. Spanning men’s and women’s high fashion, the luxury markets of style and art, and the legacy of creative freedom, ODDA is a compendium of photographic beauty steeped in design culture.” Sounds posh to me; nonetheless, if you want a copy of this issue try Amazon or eBay. Do ODDA handle back issues? Maybe. I dunno. Click on the link in the link above in this paragraph and find out, I guess.

Added – MPC ALIEN Model Kit, 1979 to 2013.

Finally, I’ve had the time to add this lengthy exploration of MPC’s ALIEN model kit to HIDEOUS PLASTIC. This one has been important in several ways, but here it is now. All six editions of MPC’s ALIEN model kit released from 1979 to 2013. Lots of information if you want a helpful guide to find out if that MPC kit item you have looking at on eBay is really the one you are after. Also of great significance, the addition of this item marks the end of all the vintage items associated with the release of the 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure I wanted to include here. It’s taken me a long time – four and a half years – and this stage, Phase One, is now complete. Phase Two of HIDEOUS PLASTIC, which has already been well underway for a long time now, is about to move forward. That’s going to be a lot of fun, too. It will also take many years to complete but with this MPC item out of the way, it’s time to forge ahead and leave 1979 behind. What does Phase Two comprise? You’ll have to wait until April 26 to find out.

Hachette ALIEN – #1 Now Available.

It looks like the first issue of Hachette’s over sized DIY ALIEN kit is now available from their webstore. Issues, 2,3 & 4 also look to be available, if not now, then soon. I’m not exactly sure as I don’t read French. Hachette’s ALIEN project is a weekly (or monthly?) part works subscription from the publisher. This first issue includes a number of goodies including the first piece, the upper skull, orbits and maxilla of what will become a half scale (four foot tall) replica of the Alien, complete with electronic and motorised parts. Swoon. I’ve been keeping an eye on this item for a while now. I don’t know if an English version will become available but let’s hope so. It looks like many other print goodies appear to accompany this wonderfully ambitious product.

Cracked.com – Kenner ALIEN Article.

Here’s a great little written piece over at cracked.com regarding the 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy. Called “ALIEN: The Terrible Toyline Destined to Fail”, this examination may be brief but at least it does touch on all the key reasons why the wonderful old Kenner ALIEN toy is sought after today. It’s a great article and the tongue in cheek delivery serves to highlight how ludicrous this toy was for children. As these toys were released in October 1979, can you imagine the letters to Santa that would never have been written? “Dear Santa. I just want one thing for Christmas this year. Can I please have an over-sized, ugly as sin ALIEN doll based on a face ripping space monster that shreds people to pieces that appears in an R-rated movie I am too young to see. I promise to leave it in the unopened box so it will be worth a fortune in forty years time. Love, Jimi”.

eBay – Broken Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

Here’s a Kenner ALIEN being auctioned on eBay. He’s complete. Mind you, that declaration does include some clarification. All parts are present but mind you, his arms have been severed and that’s not a great look. You could say, he’s “mostly ‘armless”. On the other hand, would you bid US$300 for this broken forty year old toy? Someone probably will; but this opening bid is already asking the top dollar for a sample of this toy already in substantially less than perfect condition. These severed arms aren’t hard to fix but it will never be fully original condition as the extant anchors found inside the old toy will remain permanently severed even after the arms have been restored to the figure. I’ve repaired more of these things than I can count. That’s true, actually; and I have more to reassemble, too. I own boxes of parts of these things. Boxes. So, I have had a lot of practice in this regard. Continue reading

Loyal Subjects Easter Egg Unboxing Video.

Ya. These Loyal Subjects ALIEN Easater Eggs are definitely on my ever expanding want list. What? This is an Walmart exclusive?! This definitely not fair. Here’s an unboxing video of what you can expect. I love it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtpmGCx5sXc

Oh well, once again it’s a case of “not fair” in an unfair world. What else is new, huh? Nonetheless, that doesn’t stop these things from being fantastic. At this stage, I’m just happy they exist.

Loyal Subjects ALIEN Easter Eggs, 4 Pack.

It looks Loyal Subjects are getting into the Spirit of Easter this year embracing the good old tried and true Easter Eggs product line, this time with a twist. These Easter Eggs contain two inch tall Aliens. This is nice. I’m all for toys for children based on my favourite R-rated movie series. These look like a real treat, too. These items will be exclusive to Walmart.Pre-order is now available for US$19.96 (plus postage) and packs of four ALIEN Easter Eggs are expected to arrive on April 1. Each egg will contain two random Aliens inside, making a total of eight lurid coloured critters per pack. Continue reading

eBay – 1979 Kenner ALIEN Toy Poster for Sale.

Here’s a tasty treat for someone looking to purchase a vintage, forty year old Kenner ALIEN poster. This one is available on eBay right now. The seller only wants a pittance for it. That is, he’s only asking for US$200 dollars for this double sided black and white poster/instruction sheet. You might think that’s expensive, even for one of these old inclusions. And yeah. You shouldn’t me to tell you you’d be right. Nonetheless, US$200 it is. I’ve seen them sell upwards of US$100, anyway. That’s not uncommon, actually. Since these things are only going to become more scarce as time passes by, eventually a price tag of US$200 isn’t out of the question. Think of it this way, though; the price tag on this item isn’t so much as setting any precedents here – it’s merely ahead of its time. The day may yet come when US$200 for one of these old double sided sheets will be the price you can expect to pay for one. It’s just a matter of time.

eBay – 1979 Kenner ALIEN in Beat Up Box.

Here’s a nice treat, if you are into forty year old toys inside old beat up boxes. This complete Kenner ALIEN action figure and incomplete box is listed on eBay right now for the lowly sum of only US$745! ULTRA CHEAP! OK. Maybe not so cheap, after all. The price might be credible if the double sided black and white poster was also included. But it’s not. So, it’s probably worth only $600. Geeze, this is funny stuff, innit? Mind you, the vendor will probably accept a best offer. Maybe around US$500, if you are lucky.Nonetheless, the action figure itself is a decent sample. A little wear here and there is present but he’s otherwise straight and complete. That’s always welcome, an indication the item is in good shape. There appears to be no missing parts, like many of these old toys often suffer from. That puts him squarely in the US$350 to US$450 mark, alone. Without the box. Continue reading

eBay – Kenner ALIEN Crest for Sale.

Ah, it’s been a good few months since one of these crests for the 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy have been available on eBay. When these things do appear on the service, they are always pricey. This one is being listed by the seller for US$125. There’s no “Make Offer” option, either.

These things are in demand by owners of the Kenner ALIEN wanting to complete their 40 year old vintage toy that could easily be missing this part. Today, around 80% of samples of the toy are without this feature as it is easily broken off. US$125 is a lot to ask for an aged piece of plastic that is showing obvious signs of scratching and wear. Nonetheless, the vintage quality and increasing demand for diminishing supply of genuine items like this will only drive prices up. This item won’t stay listed for very long.

eBay – Pair of Kenner ALIENS for Sale.

A relatively common find in the wild, this pair of sub standard Kenner ALIEN toys are being sold as a pair on eBay. The seller is asking for US$400 for the pair but is of course willing to accept offers. Broken, missing parts, dirty and modified. It’s a lot to ask for a pair of beat up forty year old toys, incomplete at best. There are so many problems with these items, it’s not even worth listing them. Significantly, there aren’t enough parts between them to assemble a complete sample. You’d still be missing a right arm and the head dome. Though, disassembling them to build as complete a sample as possible is a viable option. However, for the cost of such an exercise, for US$400 you can purchase one in perfect condition and maybe score a box as well.

Items in this condition frequently sell between US$50 to US$120. This is definitely a “make an offer” situation but more than US$200 is still not advisable. At that price, you can easily purchase a complete item, which as stated above, isn’t even possible with this pair. Now at US$200 this purchase would be ideal, if you already have a figure(s) that could use spare parts from both of these dilapidated samples. You could then sell on the leftover pieces individually and get a substantial amount of your money back. If not all of it. Worth it if you need a left arm, a pair of tongue parts and a shoulder crest. Sell the rest for around US$20 each, and yeah. Then it’s totally worth it. Not at US$400, though.
