UPDATED – ImPerfect Organisms: ReAction Alien.

ALIEN Day was pretty good this year. Not a great load of announcements but we did see a few game updates and a selection other official announcements. Significantly, we did see a welcome promotional image from Alvarez’s upcoming ALIEN movie. No new action figures or toys were being promoted this year but I’m good with that. After all, we’re probably going to see new fun stuff when that movie and upcoming ALIEN television show are released. That will be some time yet and licence holders are probably already hard at work fulfilling those goals but not yet ready or (more importantly) constrained by NDAs to not make revelations right now. I’m sure Disney’s licencing department is holding the reins close to their chest on this issue right now.

In the meantime, we’ll keep chugging away at our fannish endeavors. Here is the latest addition to our section dedicated to ALIEN product errors, faults and defects. A Super 7 ReAction ALIEN figure in sealed package, missing its clear dome/carapace. Yes, that is correct. This item was packaged missing this iconic head covering body part. This fellow was sealed in this incomplete state. He is now documented and celebrated here at HIDEOUS PLASTIC along with a wide variety of of production error samples we have lovingly labeled as ImPerfect Organisms. Go check ’em all out! There’s some truly “smack my head” messed up samples on display there now.

Thank you Baptiste Coudert for photos of this slightly “wrong” figure. I love it.

Limited Run Games – ALIEN Isolation.

Looks like ALIEN Isolation for Nintendo Switch is getting the Limited Run Games treatment. Limited Run Games have announced they will be publishing physical copies for the platform in very restricted quantities and in a variety of releases.

ALIEN Isolation is widely regarded as one of the best ALIEN game titles developed. It originally appeared on Sony, Microsoft and PC platforms in 2014. A Nintendo Switch release appeared in late 2019. However, the Nintendo version lacked a physical release. That has now been rectified. Here’s a few words from Limited Run Games, who will be releasing physical versions of the title for the Switch, “Limited Run Games sell on a pre-order basis. Once pre-orders close or our set quantities are sold out, you won’t be able to purchase anymore. Our games are made-to-order and only printed once. We’re not kidding when we say our games are limited. What it says on the tin is what you’re going to get: your very own extra ultra-rare title, of which few in the world exist.” I don’t own a switch but these very limited release items do look sweet. I might be interested in ordering one of the more affordable items to have the game represented in my collection. Pre-orders will commence on May 26th and end 9th July, 2023.

Steam ALIEN Day Sale.

Steam is currently holding an ALIEN Day sale. This sale includes much of Steam’s current library of ALIEN themed game titles: ALIENS vs PREDATOR (2010), ALIENS Colonial marines (2012) ALIEN Isolation (2014) and ALIENS Fireteam Elite (2021). Also included in today’s sale is the pre-order for the upcoming ALIENS – Dark Descent. Sadly, Rebellion’s two decades old, turn of the century AvP title is not among those games listed in the sale. It’s a great old title, too, that I spent many an hour on. I haven’t played ALIENS Fireteam Elite just yet as I am still waiting for more content to drop to make this title worth the purchase as I’m not an online gamer. I gotta say it, though, I’ve been playing Elden Ring for the past six months and been thoroughly spoiled in this regard. The amount of content present in that title puts just about everything else out there to shame!

Fede Alvarez Shares New Movie Image.

Director Fede Alvarez has provided the first sneak peak into his upcoming ALIEN movie currently being shot. This “behind the scenes” image appeared on his Twitter account today. Visible in the image is a facehugger grasping a clapperboard inside a moodily lit corridor. The art direction and set design looks like it’s been lifted straight out of ALIEN Isolation. Especially that EMERGENCY console visible at right. A large distinct and recognisable WY logo partially obscured by darkness in the center right of frame also hints at the time period this movie will take place, sometime around the time of ALIENS.

Details of the new movie, with the working title of ALIEN Romulus, are scant right now but it is currently being shot by 20th Century Studios in Budapest, Hungary and produced by Ridley Scott. ALIEN Romulus is not a continuation of the open ended prequel ALIEN Covenant released in 2017 and is expected to be released sometime next year on Disney’s Hulu service. Thank you Fede for sharing this promotional image with us. It’s great to have you recognise and celebrate ALIEN Day with us. Fresh details of Noah Hawley’s upcoming ALIEN television series are still forthcoming.

ALIENS Dark Descent Pre-order Trailer.

A new Official Pre-Order trailer for the upcoming video game, ALIENS – Dark Descent has been released by Focus Entertainment, today. The game is being developed by Tindalos interactive using the Unreal Engine.

I love video games and and ALIENS so this isometric combat strategy title looks promising. Tension, surprise and response appear to be critical components of gameplay. I’m good with that. We haven’t seen a tactical ALIEN title for around a decade, now. ALIENS – Dark Descent will be available from June 20 and you can pre-order now for Sony, Microsoft and PC platforms.

eBay – Damaged Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

Occasionally samples of the old Kenner ALIEN toy from 1979 become available but are strictly suitable for parts stripping. One such sample has just been listed. While the chances of getting this damaged toy standing again are remote, he’s still a good source for valuable parts that can be used elsewhere to restore another figure that may be missing such items. Auction commenced at US$15.99, bidding has already started and there’s no telling where this will end.Significantly, both legs on this figure are comprehensively mutilated with the right foot completely severed and the left foot present by barely attached. Such damage usually occurs when the figure is dropped and the force of impact transfers through the ankles. It’s a relatively common form of damage but rarely happens to both feet like this. Repairing such damage and expecting this figure to stand upright again is highly unlikely. Continue reading

Happy ALIEN Day, 2023!

Happy ALIEN Day! Today we celebrate all things from space, covered in slime and wanting to rip your face off with multiple sets of chrome plated dentures. What a day! What a lovely day! For my part in celebrating, here’s a project I’ve been working on for the last six months. This item is a heavily modified 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy. I am pleased to introduce to you, the Crystal Wizard.

Oh, alright. He’s not in possession of any magic wands, spell books or other silly Harry Potter nonsense. He’s just a lovely, “dayglo” coloured happy Big Chap featuring a head to toe full body makeover. Originally painted all white, I have owned this figure for a long time and decided to customise him further. This is the result. Continue reading

ALIEN Day – XENOMOFOS are Coming!

Here’s a minor detail on a project I’ve been working on for the past year or so. I had to take a break for a while so I could manage other RL stuff, but hey. That’s life, right; always getting in the way of having fun? Anyway, getting back on track means this home grown “XENOMOFOS” project is slowly coming together. I am happy to share the parody logo that will appear on packaging for this series of completely unlicenced items dedicated to lampooning and celebrating various aspects of ALIEN merchandising. The first reveal for this project was made around this time last year, on ALIEN Day which makes it fitting to reveal this a year later. I am now looking forward to making further announcements in the coming months. Watch this space. Especially if you are interested in unlicenced knock offs, outlandish bootleg nonsense, satirical takes on collectible phenomenon and really bad junk. Especially really bad junk. After all, it’s Basura – the name says it all.

ALIEN Day 2023 Approaches.

ALIEN Day is almost upon us. April 26 is widely recognised by fans and more official channels as a day fans of the ALIEN series celebrate our beloved movie series. A movie series about a species of implacably hostile biomechanical extraterrestrial parasitoid creatures that brutally murder fellow human beings. Lovely stuff. In past years 4-26 has been the day various ALIEN licence holders and fans indulged in making a variety of public announcements. This year should be no different. Big names are often attached and while the past couple of years have been a little scant in this regard, this year is potentially very special.

Currently in the works are two major productions, a streaming ALIEN movie (which is rumored to being considered for a limited cinema release) and an ALIEN television series are both in the works. 20th Century Studios obviously feel the ALIEN property has great potential in it still. As principal photography for the movie has been progressing for a few weeks now, we may soon hear some details about what this production has to offer. Let’s hope 20CS takes advantage of the upcoming ALIEN Day to capitalise on making a reveal, either story details, character info or possibly even some images from the movie sets. It would seem to be an appropriate time to make such announcements. We shall see what happens in two days time.

Other typical announcements unrelated to these two upcoming productions may likely come from licence holders revealing new product lines or fans releasing their own content online. Who knows what new merchandise and goodies, both licenced and otherwise, will be announced? Either way, ALIEN Day is a fun day! Well, it’s a fun day if you are into appreciating face ripping space monsters that want to decimate humanity and the various industries and enthusiasts that support this fascination.

UPDATE: ImPerfect Organisms – Alien ReAction Figure.

Here’s a wonderful and imperfect sample I’ve been wanting to add to the page dedicated to all things ALIEN and faulty for a long time. Here is a Wave 3 ALIEN ReAction figure, with no less than six errors. I’d argue it has more, but let’s just settle for half a dozen. That’s more than enough, right? For me, this little guy is the epitome of what ImPerfect Organisms is all about. Multiple missing parts, missing paint application – and last but not least – an incorrect part assembly makes him the ideal representative of this cadre of less than perfect product samples. Too awesome and I love him! This factory flaw has two right legs. I’m tempted to say he’s unique – but as you’re probably aware this is not the case. My post from a week ago indicates he’s not alone. I do have another Alien ReAction figure from a different production run with two left legs. Just see below. They’re a great pair, hey.

UPDATE: ImPerfect Organisms – 2x ReAction Figures.

Not all action figures are created equal. Most make their way to retail outlets in perfect condition to be sold to eager customers. Others have no hope of making this claim even before they leave the factory premises. Take this pair of Super7 ReAction figures. Here is the Alien and Ash, both made it out the gate to the public. Neither are fit for retail – and that’s what makes this jolly pair so interesting. This Gloss Black Alien is from Super7’s A1 Series of blind box SPACE VILLAIN ReAction figures. At a glance, he doesn’t look too bad but a closer inspection reveals he is in possession of two left legs. Ash is from Super7’s ALIEN ReAction figure series Wave 3, he’s intentionally painted with milky android blood over his upper torso. He’s meant to be like that but he is strangely lacking any details on his face. His eyes and eyebrows have failed to be painted and he blankly stares at the world, eternally failing to connect with his human being peers. The mind of a deceitful machine forever trapped behind a blind gaze.

This pair of malfunction quality control samples have both been added to the section on HIDEOUS PLASTIC dedicated to such production errors, faults and other anomalies that defy explanation, ImPerfect Organisms. Man, that page is full of weird stuff, and growing.

ALIEN ReAction Figures – 10th Anniversary.

It’s been 10 years since Super7 released the first of their collectible 3.75 inch ReAction figure line at San Diego Comic Con, 2013 (SDCC13) with ALIEN spearheading the product range. This year marks that milestone, celebrating the company’s productive decade of continuous releases. What better way to do so than with a pair of unique silver coated Alien and Kane ReAction figures.

These 3.75 inch collectible toys were originally inspired by abandoned ALIEN product line prototypes made by Kenner Products in 1979. Unfortunately, the original Kenner line was cancelled and never advanced into production. Three decades later and inspired by Kenner’s cancelled range of toys, Super7 stepped in to fill this void and released their ALIEN ReAction (Retro-Action) figure product line in 2013. The past 10 years have seen a prolific output ranging in a wide variety of characters from movies, television shows and other popular culture properties in this old school format. Continue reading
