1992, Scorpion Alien

Among the first released series of Kenner’s ALIENS line was the Scorpion Alien. The figure had three releases, first in 1992 and again in the same year soon thereafter. It was also re-released once again in 1996 as part of a two pack with a re-release of Pvt. Hudson.

The spring loaded “Explodes when hit!” action feature of this toy is activated by pressing a concealed button on the back of the figure’s torso, which will instantly cause the figure to abruptly disassemble into four parts. It can easily be reassembled to repeat the action.

1992 (NEEDS: PRODUCT No.) The first edition of the Scorpion Alien was originally released with a diorama featured on the reverse side of the backing card. It was released again soon thereafter with the reverse side depicting a more conventional line up of characters available in this first series of ALIENS toys.

1992 (NEEDS: PRODUCT No.) The UK/Europe edition of the toy featured similar packaging to the US counterpart but with multiple languages prominent down the right side of the front. It also included two additional extra inclusions. A single panel of the (six piece) ‘Pop-up 3D action SPACE BASE’ was affixed to the back. Not all UK/Eu distributed package items were badged with stickers promoting the “space base” The other item was the ‘BIO DATA’ card securely held inside the blister. The US version also featured this card but it was printed directly onto the reverse side of the package.

1992 (NEEDS: PRODUCT No.) A Canadian version of the toy is also known to exist. Information on the package is bilingual and printed in both English and French on both sides of the backing card.

1992 (NEEDS: PRODUCT No.) A production error is known to exist on a third US run of the Scorpion Alien. This Series bridging version features a package assembly with incorrect MANTIS ALIEN comics inserted into the blister. Here are two different samples:

These error items are are reasonably common and relatively easy to find. They have also been documented here.

1996 (NEEDS: PRODUCT No.) Kenner would re-visit the Scorpion Alien as part of its re-release of ALIENS action figures in 1996. This time it was packaged in a two pack arrangement with Pvt. Hudson as part of their ALIENS 10th Anniversary (1986-1996) ‘ALIENS vs MARINES’ product line. This variant of the Scorpion Alien is near black with silvery grey highlights.

 


The Continuing Legacy of Kenner’s Scorpion Alien.
