ALIEN Romulus – TOTAL FILM Reveal.

TOTAL FILM magazine has an exclusive cover image of the ALIEN Romulus creature on near full display on its upcoming July edition. Two variant covers will be released including an exclusive subscriber version (Left); and a regular newsstand version (Right) which will appear on shelves Thursday, 18 July. You can preorder a copy online now.

The latest issue will heavily feature the upcoming movie, here’s some details regarding its content, “Writer/director Fede Alvarez and his bright young cast are taking the ultimate sci-fi horror series back to bloody basics with an ‘interquel’ set between Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens. Inside the issue, Alvarez explains how he’s been inspired by both of those titans of the genre to craft a new franchise instalment that promises fear, practical effects, and surprises galore. It’s the perfect primer on the kind of sequel that Alien fans have waited decades for.”

This issue is significant for other reasons. This is the first full public reveal of how the creatures in the movie will appear. All the details from the original 1979 design are present, albeit tweaked to varying degrees. From the elongated head to the barb tipped tail, all of the original features are carried over from Giger’s familiar design and wrought into a fresh interpretation with varying changes. All the dorsal crests are present, just modified and shortened. The spine and tail details are amplified. The “chicken drumstick” elbow spurs are present. It’s all there. From this image we can determine this Alien design features raised ankles indicative of an ALIEN Isolation “Stompy” styled digitigrade leg morphology; a minor departure from the original flat footed plantigrade Alien. Prior images of the head have shown us the transparent carapace and vacant eye orbits beneath.

The new batch of NECA, Prime 1 Studios and other licencees for ALIEN Romulus action figures are going to be adopting these features. That’s definitely something to look forward to when they finally see release.

ALIEN Romulus – Funko POP! Figures Coming.

A slow trickle of product news relating to the upcoming ALIEN Romulus movie is gradually picking up pace. Funko POP News! on X have shared an image of what appears to be ALIEN Romulus Funko POP! figures we can expect to see being released in relation to the movie. The upcoming line up includes Rain Carradine (Cailee Spaeny) and her synthetic ‘brother’, Andy (David Jonsson) along with a pair of Alien characters.
There’s a few interesting details of note here, especially in regard to both Alien characters. The six fingered hands and four toed feet of the original ALIEN creature have made a return. Not withstanding Funko’s stylised presentation of their figures, these shared  morphological features reflect an as yet undisclosed origin of these creatures and their relationship with the original creature as it appeared in 1979’s ALIEN. A scarred carapace along with a few other subtle differences such as pronated hands along with an alternate stance suggest these two pieces are intended to be two different creatures we can expect to appear in the movie and not just a pair of variants of the same Alien character. We’ve seen similarly defined scarred Aliens before. Most notable, appearing in the 2004 ALIEN vs PREDATOR movie where Grid became a recognisable ‘hero’ character with distinct net shaped scars burned across his head and shoulders to differentiate him from other creatures appearing in that movie. The scars serve the purpose of being One to stand out from the crowd, no less.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN Parts for Sale.

A small clutch of loose Kenner ALIEN parts have been listed on Ebay. A head and both right and left legs are being offered as loose items to buyers wanting to purchase parts to repair/replace items on their old ALIEN toy. There’s nothing particularly rare or outstanding in this trio but if you want ’em, here they are.
US$64.49 – Left Leg. Clean and unbroken.
US$64.49 – Right Leg. Clean and unbroken.
US$78.99 – Head. Showing obvious signs of wear, scuff marks with chips to vac metal teeth coating and abrasions on the glow in the dark paint. Missing tongue parts and dome. Jaw activation mechanism works.
US$129.99 – Both torso halves, tail and quad appendages. Front and rear torso halves are in good condition. All 8 mounting pins present inside shoulders show light wear but otherwise unbroken. The tail is complete and attached with corroded serrated clip. No screws for assembling the torso halves appear to be present in the listing.

These parts are getting expensive and they’re neither difficult to find nor particularly rare parts of the figure. Nonetheless, after four decades such individually available parts can be invaluable to someone who needs them.

KATblog – Kenner Re-purposed Molds.

There’s a great little article over at the Kenner ALIENS Toy blog that explores Kenner Products repurposing of molds to create new figures. This practice is nothing new and the motivations are frequently made by companies for the same reason. Re-using molds in new product means time, money and other resources are conserved. It means a fresh product line can be populated to the max and maintain a longer term presence in the market place with new product. An obvious re-purposing of molds can be seen when Kenner’s ALIENS series 2 Mantis Alien is compared to the earlier series 1 Gorilla Alien, as demonstrated with this image appearing on the blog. Despite the color differences, the same torso and arm manipulation features are clearly common to both figures.
Such re-purposing of molds extends throughout the 1990s Kenner ALIENS line, and the blog documents these in more detail. These days, this practice is still very much a part of product development. Super7 is notorious for such mold re-cycling. They managed to squeeze 48 figures/characters/variants from 8 character molds for their ALIEN ReAction line. NECA have also released many figures featuring repurposed molds. Many of their ALIEN movie, video game and comic book adapted figures feature re-cast body parts to create a “new” figure, or at least give a previous release a new identity. Significantly, look at how many times NECA’s Kane compression suit figure has been re-colored with swapped heads to create unique Nostromo identities. More relevant here, NECA also made tribute figures of both of Kenner’s Gorilla and Mantis Aliens – and these 7 inch scale figures both share the same torso molds, which itself were also re-purposed from one of their earlier ALIEN action figures.

Go read the fascinating article on re-used molds appearing in ALIENS figures of the 1990s. Thank you Eric Fischer for posting this article.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN with Wrecked Box.

This nice looking 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy is listed for sale on eBay and also includes the  figure’s box and poster. It’s included in the listing. While the figure is in great shape, it’s unfortunate the box and accompanying poster are in a significantly less than stellar condition. Bidding starts at a low, low US$9.99 so despite the poor condition of the box, this item will definitely attract some attention.
The figure is in a terrific state and it’s all there. An original dome rests on the head, all mouth parts are mounted in place and the all too often missing dorsal crest is also sitting confidently in place on its back. It’s a great figure. As for the box that is included in this listing? Well, that’s a different story altogether and it can barely be called a box. Crushed, crumpled and torn in major ways, all the box’ parts are present, it’s just in various pieces. The lid is torn off from the main case and the windows are a single separate piece. All of these pieces are included in the sale. The poster is also included and while it remains in a single sheet, it still shows signs of heavy wear. The red insert card that would normally be found inside the box to which the toy was originally attached is completely absent. At a starting price of US$9.99, you can easily spend a couple hundred dollars on just the figure alone and consider this box and poster as a “bonus situation”. It’s a piece of packaging worth having despite being in a ruined state but certainly isn’t the main attraction here. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how this auction finally pans out. The box is junk and still worth …something. It’s a nice extra item but the figure is where the real value lies.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN and Box for Sale.

1979 Kenner ALIEN toys are coming out of the woodwork, all over the place lately. This one is listed for auction on eBay right now. It’s not exactly in premium condition but it does include the box. Mind you, the box itself is a long way from being in a desirable state, and that’s obvious. What’s not so obvious are the other concerns this four decades old vintage toy may possess. Let’s get in close to see what’s on offer here.
The first issue of note is the dome seated on the head of the figure. This body part is a reproduction piece being included in this listing. So while the figure is “feature complete”, it’s not 100% original. The figure also had work performed on its arms. The aging rubber anchors holding the limbs in place on these old toys have weakened during the past four and a half decades, leaving arms frequently hanging limp by its sides. To be able to hold its arms forward in a grasping pose this item is capable, these anchors need to be replaced. The old rubber anchors just won’t support the weight of the limbs extended like this.

The box is original but in a severely battered state and the problems with its condition extend well beyond being populated with creases and heavy wear. Some print details are absent from the upper front section of the box. On a closer inspection, it is missing the “AGES 5 AND UP” recommendation on the upper right. This is due to the upper front portion of the window and hinged top being torn away and lost. A replacement top has been fabricated using corrugated cardboard and colored with marker pens to match the rest of the box. Like the figure included, the box itself features replacement parts. No B&W instruction sheet poster is included in the listing.

The final item to call to a potential buyer’s attention is the fact these old toys are not rare. Scarcity is not an issue with these toys. Right now, there are more than a dozen of these  old toys available on eBay in a wide variety of conditions. This has been the case contiguously for many years, now. This fact alone is testimony to these items not being rare. Don’t let such claims influence you. Do your own search on eBay for “1979 Kenner ALIEN” and find out for yourself. You’ll be surprised how many there are. You might want to look elsewhere before settling on bidding for this item.

eBay – Complete Kenner ALIEN.

If you’re ahead with that mortgage payment or car loan; or simply don’t care about the rent, there’s a complete 1979 Kenner ALIEN available on eBay right now. This one looks clean, in very good to excellent shape and will only set you back a paltry US$750 dollars. CHEAP! BARGAIN! I’ll take TWO for the price of THREE! Clean and in great shape, this figure has all parts present. Maybe a little worse for wear being a forty four year old toy not intended for this kind of longevity. These old toys were originally sold prior to Christmas in 1979, landing on store shelves sometime in October of that year. This sample lacks a box and poster but the commonly missing parts are all present and are 100% original. You’ll find no facsimiles or reproduction parts on this item. While US$750 appears to be a lot of money for one of these forty year old toys, the high asking price isn’t an anomaly. Even in this complete condition, Kenner ALIEN toys are not rare. They’re just so damned cool and carry such a freight of reputation the demand for them is only growing. It’s amazing then that any time, you can find at least a dozen of them on eBay at any time. This not only true, but has also always been the case for as long as I can remember. At least a dozen. Frequently more than a dozen.

eBay – Incomplete Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

There are so many 1979 Kenner ALIEN toys for sale on eBay right now, it’s a wonder how anyone can consider them to be rare. Here’s one selling at a decent price, US$249. Sure, he’s in less than perfect condition at that price but these old vintage toys are not going to become any cheaper. It’s value then isn’t attributed to its scarceness but rather its reputation. This one is missing the head dome; and the dorsal crest mounted between its shoulders is also absent. Other than that, it’s relatively complete. Oh, yeah. The left arm is severed – but that’s an easy repair, if you’re prepared to disassemble the figure. Not a difficult proposition and I’ve repaired dozens of these old toys over the years. The mouth parts, including both halves of the tongue are all present and the figure looks to be complete without any other breakages. I’m sure this average condition figure will sell.

After more than forty years, these old toys are still relatively common. They are not rare as many people insist and their value can be attributed to several factors. Notable among these are the the fact the 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy was the first toy based on an R-rated movie to be made commercially. On top of that marketing faux pas is the fact this wonderful piece of grotesguerie was promoted to be sold to children “AGES 5 AND UP”. This all occurred at a point in pop culture history when the adult toy collector market was nigh non-existent and only nascent at best. The toy caused quite a stir within social circles of conservative parents forty four years ago. The ALIEN toy has since landed it with this unique reputation that can never be matched. It’s this unparalleled quality that has imbued this eighteen inch tall with the demand it has earned itself among ALIEN fans and toy collectors around the world.

Rare, it is not; but there can never be another reputation like the 1979 Kenner ALIEN. Ever. It’s just simply not possible.

eBay – 1979 Kenner ALIEN for sale.

This 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy is looking for a new home. He’s just been listed on eBay for auction and will be a real treat for some lucky buyer. Bidding started at US$99 and bids have already started dropping on it. He’s going to find that home, no two ways about it.He’s mostly all there, too. Mostly. The head dome and dual tongue parts are missing but all the other body features are present and intact. He’s clean and looks well presented. There’s a strong likelihood the shoulders are loose and he won’t hold a pose. It’s also possible the hips will also be considerably loose. These are common flaws these four decades old figures often possess. The much sought after dorsal crest mounted between the shoulders is also present. There’s no damage to the tail and no cracks or other major faults that I can detect. He’ll definitely make some lucky owner very happy. It’s just a matter of how much attention he garners while up for sale and what the final bids are when they inevitably mount up. A great pick up for some lucky buyer. As to what he ultimately sells for? That’s worth watching just to find out.

ALIEN Romulus – Full Trailer Released.

Over two million views since its release six hours ago and featuring a lot of cramped corridors, flashing lights and squishy sounds, the full length ALIEN Romulus trailer is now available to view on YouTube. It’s all there. Facehuggers all over the place, an oral rape scene, a chestburster victim becoming acutely aware of their imminent demise and hints of full grown Aliens hunting down their prey. All of these events await a small ship full of hapless victims who board the abandoned orbital platform, the Renaissance Station. Loving what I am seeing so far. There’s just enough story hinted at within the trailer for the viewer to know that some very yucky things happen to a small group of poor unfortunate souls without too much of the narrative being revealed or blatantly spelled out.

Homages, homages …and more homages, both visually and aural to previous entries in the series help to chronologically place the movie firmly between ALIEN and ALIENS. While ALIEN Romulus is directed by Fede Alvarez, this is clearly a Ridley Scott production. His influence is stamped all over the trailer. It’s complete with sound, editing and other signature environmental details we expect from a Scott Free production. Mechanical irises in a variety of forms appear in all of his ALIEN movies and this one is not lacking in this regard. Trailer looks fantastic and it appears Alvarez has been a worthy choice for directing his own story with this new entry.

Looking more promising than ever, I am keen to see this movie. ALIEN Romulus releases globally on August 16, 2024.

KATblog – Rhino Alien – Japan Variant.

International variants of Kenner’s 1990s ALIENS toys are well known. The Kenner ALIENS Toy blog has a brief but insightful article delving into a couple of such items released in Japan. Here, Eric Fischer documents a couple of 1992 Rhino Alien samples that can be identified by variant stickers used by Japanese distributors. I love the wonderful and simple line drawing motif of the Rhino Alien sticker that also adorns the back of one of the packages.
The article also delves into a similar treatment of Kenner’s Mantis Alien and its release in Japan. It’s a brief albeit fascinating exploration of vintage toys from last century. Thank you Eric for the write up and giving us an insight into some of Kenner’s more obscure international product line distributions.

eBay – Custom ALIEN and Box for Sale.

Every now and again something a little different pops up on eBay. This 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy has been customised and now listed on eBay for sale at US$635. This one has been popping up for a while and the seller has been decreasing the Buy Now price steadily over the last few weeks. Now is a good time to take a closer look at this item. This figure has been painted over to give the appearance of the creature more closely resembling how it appears in the movie. Gone is the near black presentation of the original toy to be replaced with shades of brown and dark grey. It’s a full body paint over that lends itself well to the toy, highlighting much of the figure’s superb details. He’s all there, too. No pieces are missing.

The dome has been given a makeover to match the figure and the treatment also extends to the details beneath it. Such a treatment of the head will deprive it of its glow in the dark ability, but preserving this feature is obviously outside the scope of the artist’s intention. The sacrifice is necessary. I love this modified sample. Customised Kenner ALIEN toys like this are a lot of fun. I have several such modified Kenner ALIEN toys in my collection.
There’s more than just a figure available in this listing, too. Also included is the original box, which is in a somewhat shabby condition and a little worse for wear; along with the B&W poster. Again, the poster is in a less than perfect state but its presence makes this listing a complete package.

It’s a fascinating treatment of the old Kenner ALIEN toy and if you’re looking to add one to your collection that offers a little more unique personality via customisation, this one can be treated as a creative art object making it a worthy choice.

eBay – Average Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

Not everyone can possess a nice, perfectly preserved and pristine boxed vintage1979 Kenner ALIEN in their toy collection. There’s many samples to be found in a more average state out in the wild. This one, currently listed for auction on eBay is an almost perfect example of a figure in such “middle of the road” condition. This one is in generally good shape but missing the usual parts. Absent are the head dome, shoulder crest and both halves of the tongue. Despite these commonly missing pieces, the rest of the figure looks intact. Significantly, the slot in the figure’s back where the crest is absent is undamaged and will accept a replacement part that will remain in situ without falling out. This slot is frequently damaged on figures of this condition and aids in raising its quality. While some parts are missing, almost everything else is in largely excellent shape. This figure is clean, the tail tip is unbroken, all fingers are present, the elbows are undamaged, there are no cracks in the feet and the glow in the dark skull details are largely in great condition. The arms have been restrung so it can hold a pose but this is a solid, average quality vintage toy being sold here. A starting bid of US$9.99 makes it a good metric of what one of these base figures is worth sans frequently missing parts.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN Parts for Sale.

Another handful of loose 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy parts have been listed on eBay. These particular listings are significant this time because the four items being high demand parts commonly missing from these old toys. Up for auction is a dome, that weird crest thing that sticks out of the back of the Alien between its shoulders and a pair of tongue parts. These are all generally good clean pieces with some marks and defects. These items all have separate listings. Bidding has already commenced on all of these parts and it will be fun to watch them climb to their final closing sales prices. Here are all three listings:

Head Dome. Light scuffs and scratches, very good condition for a forty year old part.
Tongue Parts. Upper and lower parts are both included in the listing. Very good condition.
Dorsal Crest. Minor damage and missing he upper peg needed to hold it in place on back of the toy. Nonetheless, it can still be made to sit in place with a small piece of soft rubber squeezed inside the slot alongside the remaining peg.

These are all commonly missing parts and in high demand. Bidding is already well underway. The combined sales value of these three listings is likely to finish above US$200. Going to be fun to watch the final figures as these listings close.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN Parts for Sale.

If you’re looking to repopulate your old 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy with much needed pieces, a fresh batch of individual body parts have become listed on eBay. It’s almost a complete set from this tear down of the vintage toy. The downside is the post-ALIEN Day prices for each of these components. These things aren’t getting cheaper as demand for them increases. Remember, Kiddies. I don’t make these prices up. Demand drives these figures.
All parts appear to be clean and in reasonably good condition. Not all parts are available as individual listings and not all parts included are displayed in the image above. These parts all come from a US version of the figure. Here’s the complete list:

US$39.99 – Both Torso Halves. Damage to crest slot. No mention of any of the four screws needed to fasten it together.
US$59.99 – Quad Appendage. Undamaged.
US$79.99 – Head. Light scuffing. Paint looks good. Jaw mechanism works. Teeth on top and bottom jaws. No tongue parts (see below) or dome.
US$74.95 – Right Leg. Unbroken.
US$74.95 – Left Leg. Unbroken.
US$99.99 – Left Arm. Missing rubber anchor. Otherwise no missing fingers or spur.
US$99.99 – Tail. Unbroken. Includes clean metal serrated clip without rust.
US$99.99 – Lower Tongue Half. Unbroken with light wear.
US$199.99 – Dorsal Crest. Unbroken.

A great selection of parts to complete your vintage Kenner ALIEN toy. If you want to pay for these prices.

ALIEN Day – Prime 1 Studio Romulus Announcement.

Prime 1 Studio has released a teaser video for unannounced product relating to ALIEN Romulus on facebook. Much like today’s NECA announcement, very little information accompanies the post but it does confirm content is currently under development. Accompanying the video is the ambiguous phrase “Something is coming…”. That’s all the information we currently have right now. Nonetheless, Prime 1 Studio’s reputation for releasing extremely high quality statues and figures means expectations from this manufacturer will be high among fans. Again, no other details regarding price or availability are included in the announcement but this as yet unrevealed content is likely to be released around August 16, when ALIEN Romulus lands in cinemas worldwide.

ALIEN Day – ALIENS Fireteam Update.

It looks like there’s been an update released for Cold Iron Studios team based video game, ALIENS: Fireteam Elite. It doesn’t appear to be anything major. Nonetheless, an update has been released today and I’m sure it will be welcomed by players, on all systems this title is released on. Here’s the info from the developer’s facebook page, “A free Alien Day update is coming to Aliens: Fireteam Elite today – we’re raising the currency cap to 100K, and making every challenge card pack in SSGT Park’s shop FREE! ALIEN Day – KATblog – Canadian Kenner Aliens.

The Kenner Aliens Toy Blog (KATblog) is celebrating ALIEN Day with a post that will be of interest to anyone keen on obscure information regarding Kenner’s ALIENS toys of the 1990s. A new article dedicated to Canadian bilingual Fr/Eng packaged versions of Kenner’s ALIENS toys released in 1992 has been posted on the blog.
These bilingual card variants are fascinating as they provide a window into the distribution of these figures not only across the entirety of North America but also into Europe as well. Thank you Eric Fisher for the posting this article. It’s a curious read for anyone who may be interested in obscure details regarding thirty year old children’s toys based on creatures that want to rip your face off. Yeah. That’s me.

If you were wondering whether there was a bilingual Canadian Fr/Eng version of the older 18 inch tall 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure released. Yes. There was. You can find it documented right here on HIDEOUS PLASTIC.
