“A is for ALIEN” Little Golden Book, Coming 2024.

I haven’t had much to post of late and this will probably be the last item for 2023. Gotta say, it’s a good one, though! It looks like Penguin Random House is publishing an ALIEN ABC Little Golden Book for children, ages 2-5 years old. Yes. An official licenced release for children who can learn the alphabet from a story based on an old R-rated 1979 space monster horror movie. While not an ALIEN action figure or a toy, this item definitely sits well within the “Weird ALIEN stuff made for Kids” category. And I’m good with that. When I first read about this item, I was sure it was a gag; but no. Here’s the description direct from the publisher, “Follow Ripley and the rest of the Nostromo crew on a space adventure that introduces the alphabet from A to Z. With fun illustrations, this light-hearted re-imagining of the iconic movie ALIEN will delight fans young and old, as well as Little Golden Book collectors through(ou)t the universe.” I know people who are already speculating how this is going to work. They are wanting “C is for Chestburster”, “F is for Facehugger” and “H is for Headbite that leaves large chunks of your brains hanging out of your skull”. It’s a safe bet the usually difficult letter to assign, “X is for Xenomorph”, will be present.

More information about this book to be released in July, 2024 can be found on the publisher’s product page where pre-orders are available. I guess this item is also available for pre-order wherever children’s books are sold. Now, go show your four year old child some ALIEN movies so they can be properly prepared for this release.

UPDATED – Bootlegs, Knock Offs and other “Illegal Aliens”.

This ALIEN lamp arrived today. It’s a bootleg of another unlicenced product and it’s God damned awful. It’s bereft of any level of quality. Has no redeeming features. And I love it! I was lucky(!) enough to see one of these bootleg items being discussed on a Facebook ALIEN group a few weeks ago and knew I was destined to possess my very own low grade quality ALIEN lamp. So I placed my order with AliExpress, expecting an incredible piece of junk to be delivered and hoo-boy! I was not disappointed. Mind you, I would have had a completely different response had I not known the level of junk I was about to receive. It only matches the advertised sample by a significant stretch of the imagination. I sure would have been sorely disappointed had I not known exactly what was heading my way. This tragic “bait and switch” item now has a new home, it has been added to HIDEOUS PLASTIC’s lengthy examination of Bootlegs, Knock Offs and other “Illegal Aliens”. Have fun with this horrendous piece of nonsense along with all the other monstrosities on that page. There’s plenty of it documented and celebrated now.

If you have a preference for the original, higher quality Alien Xenomorph light up diorama rather than this laughable piece of junk, you can find it for sale on Etsy.

Happy 7th Anniversary, HIDEOUS PLASTIC.

Rip yer brains out, Kiddies! 7 years ago today, HIDEOUS PLASTIC launched. We’re still here, messing around with ALIEN toys both old and new, going strong and will continue to do so. It’s been an interesting past twelve months although a little light on where hostile face destroying parasitoid space creature play things are concerned. Nonetheless, the future looks bright. At this point in time, we are looking forward to ALIEN: Romulus being released next year, on August 16. That’s definitely a major release I am looking forward to. This past year has been a little scant on the ALIEN merchandise front. I’m guessing official licence holders are currently tooling up, preparing to be dedicated and committed to manufacturing tie-in goodies for that aforementioned new ALIEN movie when it is finally released. Those companies won’t be ready to make any announcements until sometime next year. Making tie-in merchandise is a lot of work but I’m guessing next year’s ALIEN Day (April 26) will be an opportunity to showcase and reveal content for us to eagerly gobble up. Such major announcements have been lacking in recent years on ALIEN Day but I’ll be covering as much as I can here on HIDEOUS PLASTIC when it happens. Good times ahead, for sure! Get Excited!

As for my own endeavors, it’s the usual mixed bag. There’s no progress to report about my 2nd book dedicated to ALIEN toys, HIDEOUS PLASTIC: This time it’s more. People who have purchased my first book love it and I am more than OK with that for now. Nonetheless, another book of such magnitude is a huge and ambitious undertaking. Rest assured, though. While this site is active, that project is still alive. We shall see what happens next year when interest in the ALIEN series is bound to increase once again.

Another side project I am also working is called XENOMOFOS. That’s a fun little undertaking I’ve also been wanting to return to. I’ll get there. It’s still ticking over in the background right now. I’ve had other more important real life stuff to deal with, but hey. I may just have some real news on ALIEN Day next year. That’s kind of appropriate, right? I just don’t have anything to show for my efforts in this regard right now.

In the meantime, this site has grown substantially over the last seven years. Each of the areas below contains a significant selection of content. Click on the links and explore the site at your leisure:

REVIEWS – Various ALIEN action figures and toys. Just what I can get here in Australia.
1979 KENNER ALIEN – Every known variant of the nefarious toy, first released in 1979.

IMPERFECT ORGANISMS – An exploration of ALIEN factory seconds, faults and errors.
BOOTLEG ALIENS – Unlicenced and knock off ALIEN toys and other oddities.
COLLATED WORKS – Links to all other features, articles, items of interest and so on…

If you would like a copy of my first book dedicated to exploringKenner’s notorious 1979 ALIEN action figure, HIDEOUS PLASTIC: In stores everyone can you scream, you can  find copies available globally on eBay for Au$45. Stocks are getting low.

With all that said, I am hoping to bring more articles to the site in the coming year. I have a few plans that need to be worked on and more content is coming. I’m pretty stoked about what is being planned and maybe you will be too. Oh, 2024 is going to be great year for some much needed space monstery goodness!

eBay – Two Dozen Kenner ALIEN Toys for Sale.

If you’re looking to buy a vintage 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy right now is a good time to look for one. There are currently at least two dozen of them listed on eBay right now. They come in various conditions from extremely well preserved in near pristine condition and in boxes right down to miscellaneous loose pieces ready to use as replacement parts on an incomplete sample you may already own. There’s a lot to choose from. The image below represents some of what’s currently available. Sure, the pricing on each of these things is still well above what some people are prepared to pay for an old toy but you can rest assured, those high prices aren’t in any way genuinely associated with any false claims to it being rare. If they’re not rare, as clearly and obviously indicated here, then what is the driving factor for the high price on these old toys? A lot of it does come to to “cool” factor, for sure but there’s more than that at play here. Importantly, it’s the toy’s reputation that drives these high prices. These toys were intended for children “AGES 5 AND UP” and failed miserably at retail due to the movie ALIEN being released with an R rating in the US. The Kenner ALIEN was the first mass market toy released to retail with an adult movie rating and it happened accidentally. It also caused conservative parents to respond to its release in an extremely unfavorable way. Some claiming it was “demonic”, “offensive” or just downright inappropriate for children.

It’s an amazing toy; and after more than forty years, you can still buy one. Which is an important consideration in another way. The presence of so many of these things available on eBay today (more than four decades later) is testimony to how many of these ALIEN toys Kenner actually made, around one hundred and fifty thousand units has been estimated – possibly more. So much for it being rare, hey. I have seen other ALIEN action figures made by different companies along with other related ALIEN merchandise released this century become truly rare, difficult to find and also priced accordingly. But this grotesque thing? Yes. It has a special standing. It was the first action figure of its type. That simple fact alone counts considerably towards its status as a collectible. So many reasons this item is regarded as one of the toy industry’s historical landmarks. This weird articulated thing is deservedly famous – albeit for all the wrong reasons.

Go spend a few hundred dollars and grab one for yourself. They’re great!

eBay – Kenner ALIEN with Mailer Box.

Kenner ALIEN toys with boxes released in 1979 are surprisingly common. You can always find them listed on eBay with just an easy search. What about such boxed samples of the toy that include the shipping box from chain stores? There, now that’s genuinely rare. One such sample has become available for auction on the service recently. It includes the action figure, original packaging and mailer box. Bidding starts at US$5,500. Lordy! This item would have been purchased via the JCPenny catalog and accordingly posted to the purchaser via mail inside the corrugated cardboard mailer box included in the listing. Such mailer boxes are very rare. This one is in great condition but the high starting bid is difficult to justify. If you are looking for a perfect condition and unopened sample of the nefarious Kenner toy at this price, this item will not satisfy your expectations. The blue themed package has been opened and the front window is loosening around the bottom of its frame. The figure itself is in fantastic condition, true; and the presence of the ratchet zip ties continuing to fasten it to the red insert card is testimony to this fact. There’s also a poster included but it’s seen better days with multiple undesirable creases though it. This item is far from being a pristine and unopened sample that such prices can command and the presence of the third party mailer box is a great inclusion in the sale; but it hardly warrants the overly high starting bid. It’s a great addition to be sure but to escalate the value of the Kenner toy to this level simply because some postal packaging is present is likely to raise more eyebrows than interested bidders.

Hong Kong Bootleg Inspired ALINE DVD Cover.

A description from a Hong Kong bootleg DVD of ALIEN has recently been circulating on social media for a few months. While still accurately describing the events of the movie, the translation back into English is hilarious in the extreme. What happens when you feed this description through AI to generate some images? Justin Norman was curious and he “wanted to see what images AI would generate, based on that description. It’s wild AF.” and posted the images online. It’s at this point I figured out it might be fun to use those images – and the original Hong Kong English translation – to create a paper insert to be placed into a DVD case. Justin was very cool with the idea and here’s the result. Well, that worked out kinda neat, hey. This is great! Now I just need to find a badly dubbed Hong Kong version of ALIEN and burn it to disc as contents. If you want one of these paper inserts for yourself, that’s no problem at all. Below is the full uncropped image. It’s yours, if you want it. Just click on the image, a single image gallery item will open and it will then be ready to download. Feel free to use as you see fit as there exists no copyright on AI generated imagery. Have fun with this:

Thank you Justin for having the inspiration to generate the images used in this wonderful piece of weirdness in the first place. Oh, and here’s the description from the original Hong Kong bootleg DVD that was the source of all of this shenanigans.

“Space ship people get up from sleeping coffin and have eat. Computer woman find strange noisings on planet and astronauts find big elephant man who dead then find too many egg. Astronaut is possess by egg demon and new egg demon is come when eat bad noodle. Seven friends and cat all try to find egg demon before space ship go home but is hard working. Who will life to escaping? Who is bad milk blood robot? Scream not working because space make deaf.”

Fantastic stuff! As for the prominent misspelling of “ALINE”? That’s Hiya Toys fault. lol.

DEBUNKED! – Kenner Red Gorilla Alien.

Recently posted on the Kenner ALIENS Toy Blog is an interesting article regarding the existence – or rather, non-existence – of one of Kenner’s rarest ALIENS toys released in the 1990s, the extremely elusive red variant of the Gorilla Alien! It looks like there is a solid reason for this item’s scarcity. It never existed. So, for collectors who are agonising over why you can never find a sample of the rare red Gorilla Alien at toy fairs, second hand toy dealers or eBay, you can stop hunting now. You simply won’t find one. Eric Fisher has explored the non-existence of this decidedly fake figure along with several other suspicious items you may (or may not) be able to add to your collection. Sadly, this appears to be the case. It’s not real. If you are interested in anything relating to Kenner’s ALIENS toys of the 1990s, especially obscure facts and information on the toy line, the Kenner ALIENS Toy Blog is worth a visit.

eBay – Signed Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

Every now and again, something unusual crops up on eBay. This is one such item. This 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy, complete in iits box is listed on the service for US$2,000. The box is opened with all contents present and complete with action figure, poster and red insert card. It also includes around half a dozen signatures collected from people involved in the production of both ALIEN and ALIENS.I’m not an autograph hunter so I’m not familiar with some of the names scrawled across the outer surface of the box. Nonetheless, among at least seven signatures present are actors Tom Skerritt (Dallas), Veronica Cartwright (Lambert), Mark Rolston (Pvt. Drake) and William Hope (Lt. Gorman). Also present is 20th Century Fox advertising consultant, Charles Lippencott. This item will be a wonderful addition to someone’s collection. It’s way outside the scope of my finances but no doubt it will eventually go to a deserving home where it will be appreciated.

Funko Blacklight ALIEN POP! Now Available.

Funko have recently released the latest licenced ALIEN item in their hugely popular POP! range of stylised toys and collectibles. Now available is the “Blacklight Xenomorph”, looking radiant as ever in a brilliant fluorescent green and blue colour scheme. Here’s what Funko have o say about this item, “An extraterrestrial threat is scoping out your Aliens collection! This black light Pop! Heralds a neon blue and green colour way whilst showcasing the Xenomorph’s poised attack stance, ready to prove its might as an apex predator. Be sure to act quick and add this incredible Pop! Vinyl figure to your collection today!” This item is some kind of “store exclusive” probably intended for the US market. It’s a safe bet though, you’ll find it anywhere Funko POP! figures are sold. …and that’s just about everywhere. I gotta say it. While I am not a fan of POP! items and don’t own any, the lurid colours is very appealing and I may yet add one to my collection. Maybe.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN Head for Sale.

Loose Kenner ALIEN heads suitable for replacement parts have been popping up on eBay lately. Here’s another one listed for sale at US$49.95. Unlike a similar decapitated item that appeared on the service a week ago (see post below this one), this sample isn’t damaged at the neck and its stub is unbroken. On the other hand, this one has been custom painted with some fashionable green trim highlighting some of the hose details and other ribbed features along the sides of the head. It has also been given some lovely silver pupil details inside the eye orbits. Very pretty indeed. Why have I never thought of doing this? lol…This head is missing some critical features with parts such as the upper dome and both tongue halves being absent. The chrome finish on the teeth is chipped and worn. On the other hand, the mouth trigger still works and the jaw opens. That’s always welcome. The upper head surface paint is still present, if a little rough in places, but it will continue to serve its purpose, function as intended and glow in the dark. It’s an unusual green custom paint job, probably done on the toy four decades ago by a creative child wanting to further embellish the toy – or possibly done by some basement stoner, bored with life. I’ve heard enough such stories to know it’s well within the realm of possibility. It’s definitely an ideal piece if you want to further customise one of these old toys and this is a perfect sample to exercise further creativity if that is your inclination. There is absolutely nothing wrong with transforming degraded samples of these vintage toys into an Objet d’Art. Just don’t attempt to remove the 3rd party paint with chemicals – you’ll risk damaging and dissolving the features – and that kind of damage is significantly uglier result than the hand crafted highlights that have been applied to this piece. Worth US$50? You have to decide that for yourself. I know if I needed a head in this state (it still works!) I’d buy it. Maybe for no more than US$40, though.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN Head for Sale.

Spare parts for the 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy are always in demand. There’s always someone seeking a limb, a dome or other parts to complete their vintage toy. Right now, a head has become available for auction on eBay. This head is incomplete, broken and possibly priced above its actual worth with bidding commencing at US$45.

This item is damaged at the neck and that’s a serious fault. The nub allowing the head to be attached to the torso via a screw is missing. You’ll need some other means to attach it to a figure and the broken stub is not included in this auction. On the other hand, if you just want a Kenner ALIEN head for any other reason, say, you want to add one to your Predator skull trophy collection, it won’t matter! Nonetheless, the item does include the lower dentures present on the mandible and the upper tongue piece inside the mouth. At US$45 dollars starting bid, it’s a little expensive for a broken body part but coupled together with two (out of four) mouth parts, it might suit someone perfectly. This item has previously been relisted at the same price. It will sell. Eventually.

eBay – “Magic Condition” ALIEN for Sale.

Lately there’s been an noticeable increase in people selling off their 1979 Kenner ALIEN toys in Australia. This “magic condition” figure has just been listed. It appears to be a good, clean piece with all of its parts in place, if not fully intact. This one is being sold by the owner for Au$999. A high price for sure and a closer look is warranted. At a glance, this item appears to be a near perfect example of the toy but the dome is in less than desirable condition for the asking price. Large cracks at the rear of the dome along with a pair of minor cracks towards the front mar its near perfect presentation. Sadly, these cracks will always be present regardless of how well they have been repaired. Make an offer. There’s no telling how long this item will remain available but he  won’t last long, regardless of the negotiable asking price.

UPDATED – ImPerfect Organisms – Kane with 2 Right Arms.

Continuing with my fascination with factory errored ALIEN products and stuff with wonky features, Kane with two right arms attached has now been added to the section dedicated to this kind of messed up junk, ImPerfect Organisms. I’m not even going to attempt to speculate on how errors of this nature happen during production. They just do; but there appears to be a great many samples of figures boasting anomalous features out there in the real world. A lot of them. I’ve only been able to document just a small sampling which are known to exist. Go check out the ALIEN freakshow where other ImPerfect Organisms such as this item now comfortably reside.

eBay – Limbless Kenner ALIEN for Sale.

Way back in the 1960s when I grew up, Australian toy manufacturer TOLTOYS released a game called Creepy Critters. This substantially incomplete ALIEN toy for sale on eBay reminds me of that old game. Just start with the torso and build your insect-like “creepy critter” by rolling a die and continue until all body parts have been added. A game of chance selection for kids. All you need is a torso and you can start building from there. Obviously there’s a lot of parts missing from this toy and it’s not priced to be sympathetic to anyone who may want to ‘DIY’ their own Kenner ALIEN. Nonetheless, it’s a good base for a complete rebuild. There’s signs of wear throughout the figure and you’ll need to spend a substantial amount of more coin just to acquire the parts necessary to complete it’s presentation. To do so, you’ll need: both arms, both legs and the tail just to get it to a basic presentable state. Those are relatively easy to find. The more elusive parts such as the head dome, dorsal crest and both tongue parts may present a challenge, both to your patience and your wallet. Nonetheless, some of these parts necessary to rebuild this item can already be found on eBay.

Providing the screws are present in the remnants of this vintage toy, you’re good to go! The screws, if missing, can be replaced with compatible screws used to assemble Kenner’s 1979 Star Wars Millennium Falcon play set. Those are readily available in abundance on eBay. Once the screws have been removed, this item should be easy to pry apart to work on the reconstruction, providing no glue has been used in fastening both torso halves halves together. One quick message to the seller regarding the use of glue on this wonderful incomplete relic may be wise. Otherwise, this rebuild project may come to a grinding halt if both halves are assembled with adeshive. Having said all the above, this item is the perfect opportunity to build your own extraterrestrial creepy critter. You just need to roll a 1, first.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN Crest for Sale.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen one of these much sought after loose body parts for a 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy for sale on eBay. This crest is currently listed for US$99.99. Sure, it’s a little pricey for a small piece of worn plastic but these old toys occupy a very unique place in the history books in every sense of the definition. This sample is a little rough around the edges with some burring along the connectors with other minor imperfections present. Nonetheless, this item is a genuine piece salvaged from a forty year old vintage toy and not a reproduction part. Prices like this are commonplace, matching the demand for these elusive parts. Along with the dome that sits on the head (and to a lesser degree, the dual tongue halves) this item is the most sought after body part for collectors wanting to complete their own Kenner ALIEN toy. An estimated 60-70% of surviving samples of the toy released in 1979 now lack this odd shaped piece. It’s worth watching just to witness the duration of the sale and see how long it takes to sell. Someone will buy it. It won’t take long, even at this price.

UPDATED – ImPerfect Organisms – Scorpion Alien.

Doing some research in my own collection and I didn’t even realise I had this Kenner ALIEN Scorpion package error. Here’s a Scorpion Alien with an incorrect mini comic inclusion. Featured inside the Scorpion Alien package is a comic intended for Kenner’s Mantis Alien figure.Intriguingly, this isn’t an isolated instance of this package error. I know of at least one other sample where this same error has occurred on this exact same product item. This item has now been added to this blog and become a resident of HIDEOUS PLASTIC’s section dedicated to production errors, ImPerfect Organisms. Click on that link! Check him out along with a sample of other extraneous ALIEN items featuring curious errors and mysterious anomalies.

eBay – Canadian Kenner ALIEN for Sale in Australia.

As a counterpoint to my post immediately below, here’s another 1979 Kenner ALIEN toy for sale in Australia. At only Au$500, this one is a considerably better consideration, and for more than just the monetary benefit, too. Not only is this old toy cheaper by a keen Au$300, it’s considerably more complete. Both tongue parts and the dorsal crest are present; and importantly, all are original pieces. The only body part missing from this sample is the dome on the head. Everything else is present. There’s a small stress fracture in the location of the dorsal crest where it attaches to the body and three of the four the “weird tubie things” on its back appear to be broken at the base and rotate freely. Nonetheless, this is a reasonably easy fix can be made to get them back into situ so it’s not too much of a problem.

The real bonus here is beyond any concerns for regularly missing parts being present. This item is one of the rarer samples of the toy, made in Canada. The subtle differences here compared to one made in the US are not obvious in photos. Nonetheless, at Au$500, the seller is considering offers for this almost complete, four decades old vintage item.

eBay – Kenner ALIEN for Sale in Australia.

A relatively common find in the US but outside that country can be a challenge, this average condition Kenner ALIEN toy is available for purchase in Australia on eBay. The seller currently has it listed for Au$899. In anyone’s book, this is a high price but considering the rareness of these forty year old vintage toys and the demand they commonly command, it’s not surprising. It’s simply unfortunate that significant features on this sample are not up to the price being asked.

This is a good, average condition figure. It’s clean with a few knocks and marks here and there but what really hurts it’s value are the multiple reproduction pieces that populate this item. It’s the same typical four items that often go missing on these old toys that are lacking and have been replaced here. The head dome, both tongue parts and the crest mounted between the shoulders are all reproduction parts.

Had all of these been original pieces rather than facsimiles, then the asking Au$800 wouldn’t be unrealistic. At least one complete sample ALIEN sold for around the Au$800 mark about three months ago. It’s not an isolated instance, either. Mind you, that piece was a rare sample made in Canada. Canadian made ALIEN toys were distributed internationally outside of the US, including here in Australia.

The sample being offered for sale here is the commonly found US version of the figure. There are subtle differences between the US and Ca product runs and most people won’t care for the minor discrepancies between them. Especially here in Australia where a Kenner ALIEN toy for sale is a truly rare find, at any time. Nonetheless, it’s still a highly sought after vintage toy regardless of the reproduction parts being present and the seller will probably move it before too long. Maybe a little longer if this price is maintained.

Updated – Prototype Mantis Alien Added.

I am slowly filling in holes in the section dedicated to Kenner ALIEN(S) toy product development samples, prototypes, test shots et al with at least one sample of each figure Kenner produced. Kenner’s Mantis Alien is now represented with this gorgeous sample. Photos courtesy of Matt Porter. Thank you for permission to use these images.

This section is gradually being fleshed out with almost every released ALIEN item Kenner made. Along with some curios that never saw a production run. I’m still looking to post samples of the Scorpion Alien and few others. It’s taken me more than a couple of years to build this repository of Kenner “prototypes” and it’s slowly nearing as complete a stage as I could have ever hoped to achieve. For now, Mantis Alien is represented here.

Thank you to all the contributors who have helped to make this a possibility.
