eBay – 18 Inch ALIEN(S) Action Figures for Sale.

These ALIEN(S) action figures are for sale right now as a pair for US$400 on Ebay.  They’re both different items separated by more than 3 decades.  One is an original 1979 Kenner ALIEN action figure missing it’s dome (Right); and the other item is a Super7 tribute figure, the Classic Toy Edition, released in 2017 (Left).  Let’s see if these items are worth the asking price the vendor has listed them for. Let’s start with the Kenner item first.  It’s the older figure of the two, worth more and really is the inspiration for the other, more recently released Super7 SuperSize figure, anyway.

The old Kenner item is in decent shape for a 40 year old toy.  He’s missing the dome which is commonly absent on these old boys.  The vendor has provided a reproduction piece to help bring it up to ‘feature complete’ status.  That means, it’s all there, but as a whole, the figure is not fully genuine.  The reproduction dome looks like it was made by Derek of Shogun Plastics.  These facsimile pieces can vary in quality from batch to batch and this one looks OK.  It’s still not a genuine piece and factoring this detail into the value of the figure is erroneous.  While ‘repro’ domes can cost around US$40, they are essentially valueless.

Fortunately for this figure, the rest of it looks intact.  It even has the original dorsal crest that is frequently missing from these aging toys. There’s light wear and tear on the glow in the dark paintwork for the head, all 4 mouth parts are present if a little chipped and the arms  are present (They have been re-attached).  Those are all good features.  What’s the value of this figure, then?  It’s worth around US$130-180.  I’d expect it to sell for about that much – without a dome of any sort – if this figure was offered for sale individually.   There’s no box, no poster.  Just the loose figure. Good money for an old, incomplete toy in reasonably good condition.  It’s OK to expect that much.

Taking a look at the other figure, though, a different set of rules must apply.  The Super7 ALIENS Classic Toy Edition figure was released 2 years ago.  It’s easily purchasable online either directly from the manufacturer or other collectible retailers. Making it easy to acquire if you want one new. Significantly, it’s effectively a reproduction of the older Kenner toy marketed to be a fresh take on it by modifying specific features so it matches the Xenomorphs seen in  the 1986 sequel.  That’s one of its problems.  It’s a reproduction piece regardless of claims to it being a ‘tribute’, ‘what if’ or ‘speculation’ figure.

Sure, it’s a fully licenced reproduction but in this regard, it’s really not much different than the facsimile dome that accompanies the older Kenner toy included in this sale.  It’s just not comparable to a genuine item.  It has other important issues as well.  Much like the older toy appearing in this listing no box or poster is present.  What’s more, it would appear the crest that is frequently missing from the older Kenner toy is absent from this modern reproduction piece.  So, what we have here is an unboxed reproduction piece that is missing parts.  That’s not good.  You can see in the photo below the piece should be visible between the shoulders.  Compare it to the photo above of the 1979 figure and it’s absence is obvious.

So what is this reproduction/tribute/what-if figure really worth?  Had it been complete with opened box and poster, you could expect to pay around US$100 for it.  An unopened box would net you around US$150.  In this condition however, a lot less.  Maybe US$50.  Give or take twenty dollars either side of that figure.  Both figures together are worth around US$250 – certainly not more than that.  The older Kenner toy is worth substantially more and the more recently released Super7 item will simply have to tolerate the fact it’s a ring-in.  A broken one at that.

If anything, I think listing them individually as auction pieces would be the best way to go.  I’d list the older Kenner item without the dome.  It may not be ‘feature complete’ without the reproduction piece but it will be 100% genuine parts without it – and buyers are more interested in the figure being 100% genuine (notwithstanding repairs to the arms) rather than include fake parts that lower that important percentage value.

Instead, I would list the dome along with the Super7 figure. As the Super7 SuperSize ALIENS item is a 1:1 scale reproduction of the older toy and the reproduction dome fits perfectly.  Better, actually, as domes tend to be a little oversize.  It will have a slight overhang on the back of the head due to the figure being remodeled not to accommodate one.  The upshot here is the dome piece will sit more accurately on the head to display better on the front.  So both reproduction pieces really do work well together.

After all, none of them are genuine pieces.

I’ll be interested in seeing how this sale progresses and how long this pair will take to sell.  This pair of figures was initially listed at US$500 and the vendor has already discounted them to US$400.  Personally, I can see further discounts happening on this listing.

If you would like more information on how the newer Super7 SuperSize figure compares to the 4 decades old Kenner toy, there’s a page dedicated to exactly that purpose here on HIDEOUS PLASTIC.
